Jason Smith (R-MO), chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, and David Schweikert (R-AZ), chairman \u2064of the Oversight Subcommittee, wrote to IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel,\u2063 requesting papers that could prove the decision\u2019s legality.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It&#8217;s been over 2 years\u200d since the IRS destroyed \u200c30 million  unprocessed tax records prepared by millions of \u200dAmerican taxpayers.\u2062 To date, the IRS refuses\u2062 to hand over a memo\u2062 detailing\u200c the decision to destroy returns.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJasonSmith?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepJasonSmith<\/a> &#038; I \u200bare demanding answers<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OXdyNYl4ui\">https:\/\/t.co\/OXdyNYl4ui<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. David Schweikert (@RepDavid) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepDavid\/status\/1683902641850417156?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July\u2063 25, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" async data-cmplz-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>According to the Center \u2064Square outlet, the letter asked Werfel to comply with the paperwork request after the agency \u201cwillfully ignored\u201d the\u2064 committee\u2019s initial inquiry last year.<\/p>\n<p>This most recent letter comes more than\u200b a year after a study by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration revealed that the IRS would be destroying over 30 million \u201cunprocessed,\u2064 paper-filed information returns\u201d in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Taxpayers\u2064 may have needed \u2064those documents if their taxes were audited, which is plausible given the\u200b Biden administration\u2019s\u200c recent push for increased audits.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe decision to \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-gives-warning-to-irs-thats-been-caught-red-handed-destroying-docs\/\" title=\"GOP Gives Warning to IRS That\u2019s Been Caught Red Handed Destroying Docs\">destroy information returns diligently prepared<\/a> by millions of American taxpayers demands congressional oversight,\u201d the letter said. \u201cThe destruction of these returns raises the\u2063 question of whether information reporting should be scaled back to reduce the burden placed on taxpayers in reporting information the IRS does not even use.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"wp-block-file\"><object class=\"wp-block-file__embed\" data=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/7.25.23-IRS-Doc-Destruction-Letter.pdf\" type=\"application\/pdf\" style=\"width:100%;height:600px\" aria-label=\"Embed of 7.25.23-IRS-Doc-Destruction-Letter.\"><\/object><a id=\"wp-block-file--media-335dc3a6-99ea-434c-83c5-012080ddb75b\" href=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/7.25.23-IRS-Doc-Destruction-Letter.pdf\">7.25.23-IRS-Doc-Destruction-Letter<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/7.25.23-IRS-Doc-Destruction-Letter.pdf\" class=\"wp-block-file__button wp-element-button\" download aria-describedby=\"wp-block-file--media-335dc3a6-99ea-434c-83c5-012080ddb75b\">Download<\/a><\/div>\n<p>Smith and Schweikert also chastised the IRS during the Biden administration for failing to cooperate with the House \u2062oversight probe.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThe Biden administration\u2019s refusal to\u200c respond to the Committee, engage\u200c in a substantive discussion with staff about the\u200b request, and ultimately deny access to the decision memorandum\u2063 obstructs Congress\u2019s ability to conduct our important oversight responsibilities,\u201d the letter continued.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Werfel \u2063was given until August 8<sup>th<\/sup> to\u200d answer the written inquiry.<\/p>\n<p>The IRS investigation comes\u2064 at a shaky time when the federal tax agency is \u2062currently dealing with a \u2063number of concerns related to suspected politicization and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/newsroom\/irs-halts-surprise-visits-to-taxpayers-homes-and-businesses-over-safety-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">home visit \u2064policy<\/a>, which was recently modified\u200d on Monday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I urge \u200dany \u2064and every IRS \u200demployee: If you know of misconduct, please\u200d come to the\u2062 Ways and Means \u200dCommittee, so we can hold accountable those \u200bwho are responsible. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HBSOy5sIHz\">pic.twitter.com\/HBSOy5sIHz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep.
