A nearby national security lab also faced\u200c flames \u201cwhere assessing apocalyptic threats is a\u2063 specialty and wildland fire is a beguiling equation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-wildfires-science-technology-ca71db6ea9b65c744d398e524444cce8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>A\u200b Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-07\/Cerro%20Pelado%20ROI_Approved__Redacted.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> from the U.S. Forest Services concluded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">federal agency<\/a>\u200c was to blame over a prescribed\u200c burn that officials failed to fully extinguish.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Forest Service Southwestern\u200b Regional Forester Michiko Martin said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/detail\/santafe\/news-events\/?cid=FSEPRD1124829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a> the fire \u200b\u201cwas caused by \u200ba holdover fire from the Pino West Piles Prescribed Fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA \u2063holdover fire is a fire that smolders undetectably,\u201d Martin said. \u201cIn this case, despite being covered by wet snow, this holdover fire \u2063remained dormant for [a] considerable time with no visible sign of smoke \u2062or heat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s wildfire \u2063was not the first time\u2064 an investigation found the Forest Service culpable\u200b in runaway flames. Last year, the \u2062forest agency\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/01\/federal-incompetence-is-responsible-for-new-mexicos-largest-wildfire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed responsibility<\/a> for a pair of \u200cwildfires that merged into the largest blaze in\u2062 New Mexico state history since tracking began in <a href=\"https:\/\/gacc.nifc.gov\/swcc\/predictive\/intelligence\/Historical\/Fire_and_Resource_Data\/Historical_Fires_Acres.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1990<\/a>. The Calf Canyon Fire torched at least 330\u200c homes and displaced thousands across 312,000 acres, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/21d2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to The New York Times.<\/p>\n<p>The fire,\u2062 which burned at the\u200d same time as the Cerro Pelado, \u200dwas also caused by a prescribed burn that officials failed to\u200c put out.<\/p>\n<p>Veteran Forester Joe Reddan has warned about the \u2062overreliance on prescribed burns to manage overgrown forests for \u200cdecades. Reddan, who now runs \u200chis own forestry consulting firm, said the kind of slash pile burning used in the Santa Fe National Forest is a\u2062 method that works \u201cbut requires diligence in monitoring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to check \u200bthose piles every day for heat,\u201d\u200d Reddan told The Federalist. It\u2019s the same reason campers are encouraged to stir campfire coals \u200bwith \u2063water to ensure no\u2062 hot ashes are left over underneath. The \u200cSanta Fe National Forest, however, apparently missed \u200bthe holdover flames that burned down about 380,000\u200b acres, or \u201chalf\u200b the state of Rhode Island,\u201d between \u200dthe Cerro Pelado Fire and the infamous Hermits Peak\/Calf Canyon Fire in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Martin said the fires led the service to \u2063implement a 90-day pause on prescribed burns as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/u-s-forest-service-sparked-new-mexico-wildfire\/\" title=\"U.S. Forest Service ignited NM wildfire.\">federal officials reviewed incumbent protocols<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Southwestern Region, including the Santa Fe \u200cNational\u200b Forest,\u2062 has since implemented all recommendations from the \u2018National Prescribed Fire Program Review,&#8217;\u201d Martin said. \u201cSpecific\u200d to \u2063the Southwestern Region, \u2062firefighters now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/us-forest-service-admits-controlled-burn-caused-extreme-wildfire-in-new-mexico\/\" title=\"US Forest Service admits controlled burn sparked New Mexico wildfire.\">monitor pile burns<\/a> using handheld \u2062thermal devices and drones that can detect \u2064whether heat is present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New Mexico Democrat Gov.\u2063 Michelle Lujan Grisham \u200cblasted the Forest Service for federal officials\u2019 repeated negligence in burning down the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am \u2013 again \u2013 outraged over \u2062the U.S. Forest Service\u2019s negligence that caused this destruction,\u201d\u200c Grisham said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/2023\/07\/24\/gov-michelle-lujan-grisham-issues-statement-on-the-u-s-forest-services-admission-of-responsibility-in-the-2022-cerro-pelado-fire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>. \u201cThe Forest Service must abandon their business-as-usual approach to prescribed burns and forest management in \u200dour state.\u200b I am relieved to hear that the Forest Service will now \u200buse technology to prevent this \u2063from occurring in the future.
