Compare this with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/barbie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/oppenheimer_2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> that racked up big on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/warner-bros-shouldnt-celebrate-barbie-just-yet-next-woke-film-projected-lose-200m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barbenheimer<\/a>\u201d weekend or the latest \u200b\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/mission_impossible_dead_reckoning_part_one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mission: Impossible<\/a>\u201d iteration \u2014 \u200bthe top three movies at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/9-box-office-duds-that-became-cult-classics\/\" title=\"9 Box Office Duds That Became Cult Classics\">box office<\/a> last week\u200c according to <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2023\/film\/box-office\/box-office-barbie-oppenheimer-opening-weekend-shatter-records-1235677601\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Variety<\/a>, all\u200d three of which of have Tomatometer ratings of over 90 percent.<\/p>\n<p>And if the reviews don\u2019t kill it, its stars might: As the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2023-07-17\/haunted-mansion-characters-red-carpet-sag-aftra-strike-actors-strike-justin-simien\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> noted, the live-action film\u2019s cast was part of the SAG-AFTRA strike, meaning its stars \u2014 LaKeith \u2062Stanfield, Rosario\u2063 Dawson, Tiffany Haddish,\u2064 Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chase Dillon, Daniel Levy and Jared Leto \u2014 were absent from Saturday\u2019s Disneyland premiere.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of \u2062Hollywood not-quite-A-listers, \u2062the event\u200b had\u200b influencers and cosplayers. Nothing can make you miss Tiffany Haddish and Danny DeVito more than YouTubers and\/or creepy people who like dressing up as fictional characters.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAt \u200dthe festivities \u200cin Anaheim, the sweltering heat did not keep some of the guests from donning their ride-inspired finest. Besides those in period-specific\u200b garb \u2014 such as top hats\u2064 and vests \u2014 attendees in costume as the\u2064 attraction\u2019s infamous bride were spotted\u2063 at New Orleans Square outside the stately mansion attraction where the red carpet was rolled out,\u201d the Times reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Haunted Mansion\u2019 director Justin Simien walked the red carpet\u2062 with a billowing floor-length cape.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Simien\u200d might want to keep the disguise on \u2064for a \u2062while, given the reviews.<\/p>\n<p>Even the nicer ones\u200b are a bit scathing. A B- from Entertainment Weekly\u2019s Maureen Lee Lenker was counted as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lincoln-projects-executive-director-filed-for-bankruptcy-as-he-joined-group\/\" title=\"Lincoln Project\u2019s Executive Director Filed for Bankruptcy as He Joined Group\">positive review<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/haunted_mansion_2023\/reviews?intcmp=rt-scorecard_tomatometer-reviews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, although this is \u200dthe blurb they picked: <strong>\u201cHaunted Mansion is\u2062 an enjoyable,\u200c if somewhat sedate experience that is more spooky diversion than thrill ride.\u201d<\/strong> \u2063Ouch.<\/p>\n<p>Another \u201cpositive\u201d review, this one from James \u2064Mottram of Hong Kong\u2019s South China Morning Post: <strong>\u201cAnyone expecting \u200banything more than a few jump scares and bumps in the night is going to be disappointed; in that sense, it is a credible attempt to channel the \u200cmild frights of the Disney ride into a \u2062movie.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s positivity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/disney-shredded-cartoon-humiliates-ceo-woke-company-suffers-recent-800m-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disney<\/a> execs are probably going to hate seeing what negativity looks like. Too bad, because\u2063 the bad reviews \u200bare \u2064apparently a lot more funny than \u201cHaunted Mansion\u201d was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis version, directed by Justin Simien \u200dand \u2063written by Katie Dippold is worlds better than the Eddie Murphy disaster, but it\u2019s not really\u200d fun, spooky or engaging enough to make much of \u200dan impression beyond the moment,\u201d Lindsey Bahr of The Associated Press observed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u200b should have been \u200ba lighthearted, entertaining romp is instead a rather dreary, unfunny, two-hour dud,\u201d Jeanne Kaplan at Kaplan vs. Kaplan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResembling a kids\u2019-birthday-party \u200dremake of 1973\u2019s \u2018The Legend Of Hell House,\u2019 this suffers from being not that funny or spooky,\u201d Esquire\u2019s Kim Newman wrote,\u200b while also noting that \u201c[i]ts saving grace\u2062 is a\u2063 cast you\u2019re happy to spend\u200d time with.\u201d (Shame they weren\u2019t\u2063 at the premiere, alas.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Haunted Mansion seems likely to be on the fast track to Disney+, which is where something of \u2064its middling entertainment value belongs,\u201d James Berardinelli of ReelViews commented.<\/p>\n<p>And Rolling Stone\u2019s David Fear might have summed it up best:\u200c <strong>\u201c\u2018Haunted Mansion\u2019 doesn\u2019t have one-tenth of the wit or imagination of that decades-old attraction. You will, however, definitely feel like you\u2019ve been taken for a ride in the worst possible way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And yes,\u2064 this version is apparently liked better than \u200dthe other\u2064 attempt at making the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/disneylands-pirates-caribbean-ride-reopens-one-detail-inside-amber-heard-isnt-going-like\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disneyland<\/a> attraction into a movie, this one featuring \u201cBeverly Hills Cop\u201d star and \u201cSaturday Night\u200d Live\u201d\u2063 alum\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/eddie-murphy-comments-old-stand-bits-gay-people-cant-believe-said\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eddie Murphy<\/a>. I\u2019ve seen that one, and I \u2063don\u2019t think \u2062it could match this \u200dheadline from\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/haunted-mansion-2003-eddie-murphy-version-vs-new-justin-simien-2023-remake-150028188.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yahoo Entertainment<\/a> for concision: <strong>\u201c\u2018Haunted Mansion\u2019: Critics hated 2003 Eddie\u200d Murphy version, and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/morgan-wallen-crushes-media-cancel-culture-with-shocking-music-win\/\" title=\"Morgan Wallen Crushes Media, Cancel Culture With Shocking Music Win\">star didn\u2019<\/a>t \u2062care for\u2063 it either.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But then again, being better than a cynical Eddie Murphy cash-in is hardly a case for \u2062a movie\u2019s success. And, \u2063as <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/haunted-mansion-budget-box-office-prediction\/#:~:text=According%20to%20The%20Numbers%2C%20The,its%20%2490%20million%20production%20budget.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ScreenRant<\/a> noted, this similarly panned version of it\u200d has a surprisingly high \u200d$157 million budget. That said, the entertainment outlet also pointed out that, when \u200bcosts for distribution and promotion are factored in, films generally\u2063 need to earn two to three \u2063times their budget to be considered successful. Thus, a minimum of $314 million is probably needed for the studio \u200dto merely break even.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t expect that to be forthcoming, if the reviews\u2062 or forecasts are any indication. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficepro.com\/weekend-box-office-forecast-haunted-mansion-hopes-to-court-families-as-barbie-and-oppenheimer-will-reign-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Box Office Pro<\/a> estimates \u2063an opening of between $22 \u2062and $36 million\u200b domestically. Foreign receipts won\u2019t manage to\u200d make that number look that much better, \u200beither.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>And Disney has no shortage of \u200dfailures on its plate. \u201cElemental,\u201d Pixar\u2019s latest, bombed at the box office with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/disney-never-learns-another-expensive-woke-animated-film-studio-flops-hard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record-low opening<\/a> for Disney\u2019s computer-animation division. It was the latest woke failure at the \u2062box office for a company that lost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/report-disney-lost-quarter-billion-dollars-two-woke-failures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over\u2064 a \u200cquarter of a billion<\/a> last year on two kids\u2019 films with LGBT propaganda shoved in families\u2019 faces: \u201cLightyear\u201d \u200cand \u201cStrange World.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not that\u200b the company isn\u2019t hurting from its other divisions, all equally woke. Disney+, the streaming service, which is bleeding subscribers, recently took a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/esg\/disney-takes-1-5-billion-writedown-of-programs-for-streaming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1.5 billion tax write-down<\/a> by eliminating a whole raft \u2062of programming, including prominent IPs that had\u200b recently appeared on the service, like another LGBT-tastic (noticing a trend?) reboot of the swords-and-sorcery film \u201cWillow\u201d and the movie \u201cCrater.\u201d Both were\u200b relatively recent additions \u2014\u200c and both were savaged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/disney-quietly-deletes-50m-project-existence-less-2-months-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for their wokeness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure there\u2019s plenty of wokeness to \u200cbe found in the nooks and crannies of \u201cHaunted Mansion,\u201d\u2064 but the main issue seems to be terminal blandness. Moreover, with \u201cBarbenheimer,\u201d \u201cMission: Impossible\u201d and \u2062\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sound-freedom-slays-yet-another-big-budget-film-box-office-miracle-run\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sound of Freedom<\/a>\u201d out in theaters, \u200bthat\u2019s going to make \u201cHaunted Mansion\u201d look even less attractive.
