What prompted this crisis? Not a\u200b potential\u2064 Iranian\u2062 nuclear attack; not the\u2062 presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/no-israel-is-not-in-existential-danger-of-civil-war\/\" title=\"Israel is not at risk of a civil war.\">violent terrorist groups embedded<\/a> in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza.\u200b No, according to\u2064 our \u2064foreign policy \u200celite, the breaking point is the\u200c Israeli government\u2019s passage\u200d of a mild\u200c version of a\u200d judicial reform. That reform curbs the\u2063 overweening power of the Israeli Supreme\u2063 Court, which declared in the 1990s \u200bthat it had the unilateral ability to strike down executive\u200b actions by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fed-hikes-interest-rates-another-0-75\/\" title=\"Fed Hikes Interest Rates Another 0.75%\">simply declaring<\/a> them \u201cunreasonable.\u201d Now, the Israeli Supreme Court will still be able \u200bto strike down executive actions \u2013 but they\u2019ll have to ground \u2062their rationale in actual \u200blaw, rather than simple political disagreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The Battle for \u200dIsrael&#8217;s \u2064Secular Identity<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This \u200bjudicial reform has prompted spasms\u2064 of apoplexy in Israel \u2064among those who voted against the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/israels-political-crisis-bennett-government-coalition-loses-majority-as-whip-idit-silman-resigns\/\" title=\"Israel\u2019s Political Crisis: Bennett Government Coalition Loses Majority As Whip Idit Silman Resigns\u00a0\">current coalition government<\/a>.\u200b That isn\u2019t \u2064so \u200dmuch about the actual content of the\u200d judicial reform \u2013\u2064 many of those in the center of the \u200bIsraeli political spectrum fully acknowledge \u200dthat the\u2062 judiciary\u2063 has arrogated too much power to itself. It\u2019s more\u2062 about \u2062the realization by many secular Israelis that the state of \u200bIsrael is growing \u2064more religious on a demographic level. Right now, according to Pew Research\u2064 data from May 2015, approximately 40% of Israelis identified as\u2062 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hiloni <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(secular); another 23% identified as\u2062 traditional;\u200b 10% identified as religious Zionists; and \u20628% were \u200cultra-Orthodox.\u200c Since \u2063then, the imbalance in \u200dfavor of those with stronger religious ties \u200chas grown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For decades,\u2062 secular Israelis were willing to \u2062make\u200d some concessions to the more \u200creligious Israelis \u200bin terms of religious practice \u2013 for example, Prime\u200d Minister David Ben-Gurion\u2019s decision\u2063 to grant \u2063military exemptions for\u200c ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students \u2013 but unwilling to grant governmental power\u2062 to \u200cthem. That unwillingness is\u2063 what led to the so-called Judicial Revolution \u200bof the 1990s by secular leftists. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A Nation Divided:\u2064 Protests and Threats<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now\u2062 that\u2064 a religious and traditional\u200b coalition has \u200ctaken power, many secular Israelis \u2063feel truly insecure.\u2063 And they believe that\u2062 if they lose any control over the\u2064 judiciary, they may lose all power in the state, even as they disproportionately serve\u2064 in the\u200d military and comprise a heavy\u2063 share of the state\u2019s\u2062 economy. To that\u200b end, mass \u200dprotests have been\u2063 unleashed across the state \u2062of Israel,\u2062 shutting down \u2062roads and even the airport; some military reservists have even threatened not to serve. All of this\u200b has been exacerbated by Left-wing politicians declaring that democracy itself\u2063 was at \u200bstake if judicial reform became law \u2013 an obvious untruth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seeing this \u200dmass protest,\u200c the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/george-and-alex-soros-max-out-to-israel-hating-congresswoman\/\" title=\"George and Alex Soros fully support a congresswoman who is critical of Israel.\">current\u2062 government<\/a> under Benjamin Netanyahu radically scaled back \u2062its original judicial reform proposal to \u200dthe far milder version passed this \u2064week. Nonetheless, the media \u2062still covered that judicial \u2062reform as a wild exercise of authoritarian power \u2064\u2014 despite the\u2064 fact that it is \u200dobjectively far more authoritarian to shut down \u2063the workings of an elected government via non-electoral \u2063means than to shift power from an unelected judiciary to an elected executive branch. The Israeli coalition actually had\u2064 virtually no choice\u200d but to pass the judicial\u2062 reform \u2013 \u200dif they had\u200c done anything else,\u200c they would have conceded that their coalition had zero actual power despite an\u200d election. And\u200c that would have been the most dangerous anti-democratic \u2064precedent \u200cof all.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Healing the Divide: Unity\u2063 Amidst Differences<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Israel prepares to commemorate Tisha\u2064 B\u2019Av, the fast \u200bfor the destruction of the First and Second \u2063Temples,\u200b Jews\u200b remember that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sinat chinam\u2064 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 baseless hatred \u2013 is the cause of \u200call destruction.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  The current conflagration \u2062in Israel will be healed,\u2063 but not by legislation\u200b or protest. It will be healed \u200cby the \u2062Israeli people \u2062\u2013 \u200cwho, contrary to the media coverage, still share a \u2062culture, history, and tradition. In 1993, the Guttman \u2062Institute of Applied Social Research found that 78%\u2064 of Israelis always\u200d or sometimes lit Shabbat candles; 81% always or sometimes fasted on Yom Kippur. Israelis do not see each other \u2062as enemies, even if they currently \u2062see\u2062 each other as \u200dserious opponents. Generosity between secular and religious Jews will break the current ugly \u2062stalemate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Israel will not collapse. \u200dIt will not break into civil war. It will\u2064 continue to be a fractious \u2062and chaotic country filled with highly-opinionated\u200c people who fight\u200c with each other, protest each other, argue with each other\u200d \u2014 and then\u200c share arak and chamin and cholent and falafel. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>sources, the main threat to Israel&#8217;s existence is the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
