After experiencing physical symptoms of her existential crisis including her normally\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/barbie-movie-ending-causes-a-controversy-gerwig-insists-it-was-mic-drop-kind-of-joke\/\" title=\"'Barbie' movie ending sparks controversy, Gerwig defends it as a 'mic drop joke'\">arched feet falling flat<\/a>, she ventures out into the real world and experiences negative emotions for the first time. Just like that, Barbie\u200c realizes that not everyone sees her as perfect.<\/p>\n<p>In the \u2063end, Barbie must decide whether to return to her\u2063 fake, albeit perfect existence or join the real world with its ups and downs. She chooses the latter\u200d and ends\u200d up visiting a gynecologist, ostensibly \u200bbecause in becoming \u201creal,\u201d she now has real female body parts to maintain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here to see my gynecologist,\u201d Barbie \u2062says at the end with \u2062a big smile before the movie cuts to black.<\/p>\n<p>Gerwig discussed how she came\u200d up with\u2064 the idea\u2064 for the\u200b ending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this film, it was important for me\u2062 that everything operated on at \u200bleast two levels,\u201d the director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2023\/07\/22\/barbie-moving-ending-spoilers\/70429263007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> USA \u200dToday about coming up with the final line. \u201cI knew I wanted\u2063 to end on \u200ba mic drop kind\u200b of joke, but I also find it very emotional. When I was a teenage \u200dgirl, I remember growing up\u200d and being embarrassed about \u2064my body, and just feeling ashamed in a way that\u2062 I couldn\u2019t even describe. It felt\u200d like everything had to be hidden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then to see Margot as Barbie, with this\u2063 big old smile on her face, saying what\u2064 she says at the end with such happiness and joy,\u201d Gerwig continued. \u201cI was like, if I can give girls that feeling of, \u2063\u2018Barbie does it, too\u2019 \u2013 that\u2019s both funny and\u200c emotional. There are so many things like that throughout the movie. It was always about\u2062 looking for \u200cthe levity \u2064and the\u2064 heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerwig also talked about being \u201cat\u2062 a loss for words\u201d after \u2064seeing how \u2064quickly the film took off in popularity. \u201cIt\u2019s been amazing to walk around \u200cand see people in pink,\u201d she said. \u201cNever in my wildest dreams did I imagine something like \u2064this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The movie earned $337\u200d million worldwide on opening weekend, shattering box office \u200dexpectations.<\/p>\n<p>Ben Shapiro, Editor Emeritus of The \u200bDaily Wire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ben-shapiro-shreds-barbie-in-epic-full-review\">didn\u2019t hide his feelings<\/a> about the movie. He called it\u2064 a flaming piece of dog s*** piled atop an entire dumpster \u200don <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ben-shapiro-and-brett-cooper-debate-merits-of-barbie-movie\/\" title=\"Ben Shapiro and Brett Cooper discuss the value of the 'Barbie' film.\">fire piled atop<\/a> a landfill filled\u200d with dog s***\u201d and \u201cone \u200dof the worst movies\u201d \u2063on \u201cevery possible level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shapiro hated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-left-freaks-out-because-i-hated-the-barbie-movie-heres-the-real-reason-why\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">every aspect<\/a> of \u201cBarbie\u201d except for the costume and \u200cset design. But one particular moment he called out\u200c was the \u201ctransphobic\u201d ending, which\u200d based all of Stereotypical Barbie\u2019s status as\u200b a woman on her genitals.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, there\u2019s also \u200dbeen pushback from members of \u2063the LGBTQ community that\u200c the film wasn\u2019t overtly \u201cqueer\u201d enough. Barbies and Kens were asexual,\u200d with jokes about it the whole way. One of the Kens (Ryan Gosling) and Barbie\u2062 plan a sleepover but wonder what they should do \u200cthere. The \u200dKens joke about\u200b \u201cbeaching each other off,\u201d but no one seems to understand the implications.<\/p>\n<p>A \u200clot\u200d of fuss was made about the casting of Hari Nef, a transgender-identifying star who plays one of the Barbies.\u200b But besides that inclusion, no \u200dreferences to changing gender or celebrating being\u200d trans are made throughout\u200d the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor a movie that spends so much\u2062 time dissecting gender norms and highlighting the importance of diversity,\u200b I really wish \u2018Barbie\u2019 had openly acknowledged queer people,\u201d associate entertainment editor at Parade magazine Matthew Huff told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/nbc-out\/out-pop-culture\/turns-barbieland-isnt-gay-queer-fans-hoped-rcna95541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbie is like\u2063 a drag performance of heterosexuality; it\u2019s so exaggerated that it exemplifies the ways that \u200bheterosexuality itself is constructed and performed,\u201d digital creator Alex Avila \u200ctold the outlet. \u201cI think\u200c queer people latch on to that heterosexual image because we can poke fun at\u200d it. We can reclaim \u2062it and use it in ways that show that heterosexuality is constructed \u2062and put into \u2062place by forces beyond us \u2014 and not universal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even though \u201cBarbie\u201d isn\u2019t \u201cqueer\u201d enough for some, many viewers saw the messaging as\u200d overtly political and preachy.<\/p>\n<p>The movie \u201chas a heavily \u2062political message,\u201d Shapiro said. \u200d\u201cIt is \u2064explicitly\u2062 designed\u200c to divide men from women. It has these negative messages directed at kids. It\u2019s supposed to be a kid\u2019s movie, it\u2019s rated PG-13. It is not marketed to PG-13. It\u200b is marketed to PG. It \u200bis marketed to moms who\u200d are going to skip the PG-13 rating and bring their daughters there anyway. \u200dIt\u2019s a\u2064 culturally relevant moment, a \u200bvery culturally relevant moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He mentioned how the \u200bmovie was targeted toward children as \u2063evidenced by previews at the screening he attended.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it upsetting when material is based on children\u2019s IP and marketed to \u2064little girls actually ends\u200d up being angry feminist \u2063claptrap\u2064 that alienates men from women, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ben-shapiro-shreds-barbie-in-epic-full-review\/\" title=\"Ben Shapiro destroys 'Barbie' in epic review.\">undermines basic human values<\/a>, \u2064and promotes falsehood all \u2064at the same time,\u201d he continued. \u201cI think\u200c a lot of people are gonna have \u200da right to be mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gerwig responded to critics coming down hard on her movie, sidestepping directly mentioning the feminist messaging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly, there\u2019s a lot of passion,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/greta-gerwig-barbie-potential-sequel-film-criticism-1235545212\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in response to the criticism. \u201cMy hope for the movie is that it\u2019s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party \u200band let go \u2062of the \u200dthings that aren\u2019t necessarily serving\u2062 us as either women or men.
