min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers on\u200d both sides of the aisle laid into\u200d Becerra on Wednesday, as the amount of unaccompanied\u200d children crossing the \u200dU.S. border has soared under\u200d the Biden administration.<\/p>\n<p>Subcommittee\u2063 Chairman Representative Morgan\u200d Griffith (R-Va.) \u2063said from fiscal year (FY) 2018 to 2020 the \u200b <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/orr\/programs\/uc\" target=\"_blank\">Office \u200dof\u2062 Refugee Resettlement <\/a>(ORR) averaged around 44,500 \u200breferrals\u2064 per\u2062 year, compared to the near 60,000 \u2062referrals the agency reported for FY 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Griffith said \u200cit appears unaccompanied migrant children\u2019s welfare is not \u2063a primary concern, but rather \u200dthe priority seems to have been \u201cmoving children out of ORR facilities as quickly\u200c as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThat would \u2062explain\u200b why you would \u2064have approved policies like \u200dORR \u2062field guidance 10, which expedites release of minors to people claiming\u2064 to \u2062be family\u2063 members,\u201d \u200dGriffith \u2064told Becerra. \u201cIt would also \u200dexplain your approval of ORR field guidance 11, which\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-energy-and-commerce-subcommittee-grill-hhs-secretary-over-unaccompanied-migrant-children\/\" title=\"HHS Secretary grilled on unaccompanied migrant children by House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee.\">waives background check requirements<\/a> for unrelated adults who live\u2064 in \u2063the \u2064same residence a minor\u2064 is being\u200c sent to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Becerra\u2064 said\u200d ORR has placed more than 83,000 children with\u2064 vetted sponsors this\u200d fiscal year, 85% of\u2063 which he asserted were placed with\u2063 a parent, legal guardian, or those claiming to be a close\u200d family member. <\/p>\n<p>The secretary attempted to back up the department\u2019s \u201cthorough vetting \u2062process\u201d \u2062for each sponsor, but let \u2064it slip that DNA testing is voluntary.\u2062 Becerra also clarified HHS does\u2064 not notify local social services or departments of child welfare in the communities where children are \u2062being\u200b placed out\u200b of concern\u200c to \u201cprotect\u2062 the privacy of the children.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" data-placeholder-image=\"https:\/\/c3.oann.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/complianz-gdpr\/assets\/images\/placeholders\/twitter-minimal.jpg\" class=\"cmplz-placeholder-element twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">At today&#8217;s\u200d hearing, I questioned Secretary Becerra about a number \u2063of \u200bORR practices, including ways ORR establishes familial relationships between\u200c minors and sponsors and if they work with local child welfare agencies. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HhsdMMIDeO\">pic.twitter.com\/HhsdMMIDeO<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Morgan Griffith (@RepMGriffith)\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMGriffith\/status\/1684274843619930112?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 26, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/plain\" data-service=\"twitter\" data-category=\"marketing\" async data-cmplz-src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script> <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe work with the local agencies once a child has been\u2063 placed if there\u2019s a\u200c need to \u2064support them,\u201d Becerra said.\u200b \u201cHHS\u2019s custodial responsibility\u200b for\u2063 unaccompanied children legally ends once we place them in the custody of a \u2064vetted\u200c sponsor.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the hearing Representative Michael Burgess (R-Texas) shed light on an investigation from a Florida statewide grand jury that found a single family\u2064 home in Austin, Texas had more than 100 \u200bchildren\u200c sent to\u2064 it by\u200c ORR. Another address in Texas had 44\u2063 children and \u2064another had 25. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cThey\u2064 were sent \u200dby you, not the cartels,\u201d Burgess told Becerra.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A severe lack \u200bof background\u200d checks \u200disn\u2019t the\u200c only concern, as some migrant \u2064children \u200das young as \u206213 continue to \u2063work dangerous jobs all over the\u200d country that \u2062violate child labor laws. \u201cThis is real, it\u2019s repulsive, and it\u2019s unacceptable,\u201d Becerra admitted.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary said \u200cHHS is coordinating \u200dwith the department of labor to\u200c crackdown on illegal\u2062 child labor, but claimed he holds ORR and \u200dthe entire agency to the highest standard to ensure they can provide\u200d care in the child\u2019s best\u200c interest. <\/p>\n<p>Becerra asserted HHS is committed to expanding access to post-release \u2064services \u2013 with adequate funding from Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
