Her family and friends are devastated and have requested \u200cprivacy \u200cat this very difficult\u200c time,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/popular-30-year-old-singer-rushed-hospital-doctors-find-blood-clots-around-vital-organs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">singer\u2019s<\/a> family said in a\u2064 statement reported Wednesday by the BBC and RTE. No cause \u2064was disclosed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>She \u2062was \u2063public about her \u200bmental illness, saying\u2064 that she was diagnosed with bipolar \u2062disorder. O\u2019Connor posted a Facebook video in 2017 \u2063from a New Jersey motel where she had been living, saying that she was staying alive for the sake\u200b of others and that if it were up to her, she\u2019d \u2062be \u201cgone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When her teenage son \u200dShane died by suicide in 2022, O\u2019Connor tweeted there was \u201cno point living without him\u201d and\u200b was soon hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p>Recognizable by her shaved head\u200c and elfin features, O\u2019Connor began her career singing on the streets of Dublin\u2063 and soon rose to international fame. She was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/country-star-defends-jason-aldean-fiery-2-minute-speech-live-one-little-small-towns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">star<\/a> \u2063 from her 1987 debut album \u201cThe Lion and the Cobra\u201d and became a sensation in \u20641990 with her cover of Prince\u2019s\u200d ballad \u201cNothing \u2062Compares 2 U,\u201d a seething, shattering performance that \u200dtopped charts from Europe to\u200b Australia and was heightened by a\u2063 promotional video\u2063 featuring \u2064the\u200d gray-eyed O\u2019Connor in \u200bintense \u2064close-up.<\/p>\n<p>She\u200b was a lifelong non-conformist \u2014\u200d she would say that she shaved her head in response to record \u200bexecutives \u200cpressuring her to be\u2064 conventionally\u2063 glamorous \u2014 but her political and cultural stances and \u200btroubled \u200dprivate\u200b life often overshadowed her music.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connor made headlines in October 1992 when she tore up a photo of Pope \u2062John Paul II while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/espn-host-leaves-network-weeks-after-diversity-feud-with-colleague-rachel-nichols\/\" title=\"ESPN Host Leaves Network Weeks After \u2018Diversity\u2019 Feud With Colleague Rachel Nichols\">appearing live<\/a>\u200d on NBC\u2019s \u201cSaturday Night\u2063 Live\u201d and denounced the church as the enemy.\u2064 The next week, Joe Pesci hosted \u201cSaturday Night Live,\u201d held up \u200ba \u200drepaired photo of the Pope and said that if he had been on the show with O\u2019Connor \u200dhe \u201cwould have \u2063gave her such a smack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Days later, she appeared at an all-star tribute for Bob Dylan at Madison \u200bSquare Garden and was immediately booed. \u2062She was supposed to sing Dylan\u2019s \u2062\u201cI Believe in You,\u201d but switched to an a cappella version of Bob Marley\u2019s \u201cWar,\u201d \u2063which she had sung on \u201cSaturday Night \u2063Live.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although consoled \u200band encouraged on stage \u200dby \u200cher friend Kris Kristofferson, she left \u200dand broke down, and her\u200b performance was kept \u200coff the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jason-aldean-bolts-off-stage-mid-concert-ends-performance-early\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concert<\/a> CD. (Years later, Kristofferson recorded \u201cSister Sinead,\u201d for which he wrote \u201cAnd maybe she\u2019s crazy and \u2064maybe she ain\u2019t\/But so was \u200dPicasso and\u2063 so were the saints.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>She also\u2063 feuded \u200dwith Frank Sinatra\u200b over her refusal \u2064to allow the playing of \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d\u2064 at \u200cone of her shows and \u2064accused Prince of physically threatening \u200bher. In 1989 she \u2064declared her \u200csupport for the Irish Republican Army, a statement she retracted \u2063a \u2064year \u2064later. Around the same time,\u200c she skipped \u200bthe Grammy ceremony, saying it was\u2063 too commercialized.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connor announced \u2063in 2018\u2063 that she had converted to Islam\u2063 and would be adopting \u200dthe name Shuhada\u2019 Davitt, later Shuhada Sadaqat \u2014 although she continued to use\u2064 Sinead O\u2019Connor\u200c professionally.<\/p>\n<h3>A Musical Journey Fueled by Passion<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cHer music was loved \u200baround the world and her talent\u200b was unmatched and beyond compare,\u201d Irish \u200cPrime\u2064 Minister Leo Varadkar said in a statement on social media.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connor was born on Dec. 8, \u20641966. She had a difficult childhood, with a mother whom she alleged was abusive and encouraged her \u200bto shoplift. As a teenager, she spent time in a church-sponsored institution for \u200cgirls, where she said she \u2063washed priests\u2019 clothes for no\u200c wages.\u2063 But a nun\u2063 gave O\u2019Connor her first guitar, and soon she sang \u200cand \u200dperformed \u200don the streets of\u2064 Dublin, her influences ranging from Dylan to Siouxsie and the Banshees.<\/p>\n<p>Her\u200d performance with \u2064a local band caught the eye of a\u2063 small record label, and, \u200cin 1987, O\u2019Connor released \u201cThe Lion\u2062 and the Cobra,\u201d which sold hundreds of thousands of copies \u200cand\u2064 featured the hit \u201cMandinka,\u201d driven by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/irish-singer-songwriter-sinead-oconnor-dies-at-age-56\/\" title=\"Sinead O'Connor, Irish singer-songwriter, passes away at 56.\">hard \u2062rock guitar riff<\/a> and O\u2019Connor\u2019s piercing vocals. O\u2019Connor, 20 \u2062years old\u2064 and pregnant \u2062while making \u201cLion and the Cobra,\u201d co-produced the album.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI \u200csuppose I\u2019ve got to\u200d say that music saved me,\u201d she said in an interview with the Independent newspaper \u200din 2013. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any other abilities, and \u200dthere was no learning support for girls \u200dlike \u2063me, not in Ireland at that time. It was either jail or music.\u200b I got lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing Compares 2 U\u201d received three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-grammy-nominated-rapper-sentenced-6-years-prison-admits-pride-put-position\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Grammy<\/a> nominations and was the featured track\u2064 off her acclaimed album \u201cI Do \u200bNot Want\u200d What\u200b I Haven\u2019t Got,\u201d which\u2063 helped \u200dlead Rolling Stone to name her Artist of the Year in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe proved that a recording\u2064 artist could refuse\u200d to compromise and still \u200dconnect with millions of listeners hungry for music\u200c of substance,\u201d the magazine declared.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connor\u2019s other\u2064 musical credits\u200b included the \u200balbums \u201cUniversal Mother\u201d and \u201cFaith\u2062 and Courage,\u201d a cover\u200d of Cole Porter\u2019s \u201cYou Do Something to Me\u201d \u200dfrom the \u200bAIDS\u2063 fundraising\u200b album \u201cRed Hot + Blue\u201d and backing vocals on Peter Gabriel\u2019s \u201cBlood of Eden.\u201d She received eight Grammy\u200c nominations overall \u200dand in 1991 won\u2064 for best alternative musical performance.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Connor announced she was retiring from music\u200c in 2003, \u2063but she continued to record new material. O\u2019Connor had four children: Jake, with her first husband John Reynolds; Roisin, with John Waters; Shane, with Donal Lunny; and Yeshua Bonadio, \u200dwith Frank Bonadio.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, she \u200bsaid she\u200c was joining the Irish nationalist Sinn Fein party and called \u2063for its leaders to step aside so\u200d that a younger generation of \u2062activists could take over.
