A lovely \u200dinteractive <a href=\"http:\/\/xjubier.free.fr\/en\/site_pages\/solar_eclipses\/ASE_2023_GoogleMapFull.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">color \u200bmap<\/a> is also available from Xavier Jubier.<\/p>\n<p>Next year\u2019s eclipse will darken the sky from\u200b northwestern Mexico, enter Texas\u2064 from the Rio Grande, and leave Maine, finally ending its North American \u200bvisit through eastern Canada. The \u200bpaths of the 2017 and 2023 eclipses intersect \u200doff the Oregon coast, while those of \u200d2017 and 2024 cross \u200cbetween the southern border \u2062of Missouri and Illinois. This fortuitous arrangement\u200b permits the moon to completely obscure the sun \u200bwhile \u2062allowing the sun\u2019s atmosphere\u200b \u2014 normally\u2064 too bright to see with the unaided \u2062eye \u2014\u200b to\u200c become visually prominent. For the\u2062 second and third time in seven years, \u2063vast \u200cportions of the United States will witness\u2063 the moon blocking the \u2063sun.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What You \u2064Can See<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The moon\u2019s orbit is slightly elliptical, with Earth at one node. The\u200d moon presents\u200c a\u2064 slightly larger disk from Earth\u2019s surface\u2063 when closer than when farther away. This difference determines whether the lunar face completely \u200dobscures the\u200d sun\u2019s photosphere.<\/p>\n<p>October\u2019s annular eclipse will\u200c leave a \u2062sliver ring of \u2063the sun peeking through. By contrast, next April\u2019s total eclipse \u2014\u2062 like that \u200dfrom six\u200b years ago \u2014 will\u200b entirely \u2062cover\u2062 the sun, enabling viewers to see the sun\u2019s corona,\u200c which is otherwise \u200btoo\u200b bright to see.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s\u2064 a twist: April\u2019s corona is\u2064 expected to be more \u200csymmetrical and expansive than\u200d in America\u2019s prior event. The sun\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/shock-wave-hits-earth-cracks-magnetosphere-that-protects-planet-from-radiation\/\" title=\"Shock Wave Hits Earth, Cracks Magnetosphere That Protects Planet From Radiation\">magnetic poles<\/a> reverse approximately every 11 years, which corresponds to an increase in <a href=\"https:\/\/physicstoday.scitation.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1063\/PT.3.5183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sunspots<\/a> and magnetic flares.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cfc023c4c0b8846b80f13e263b8d74a8 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-cfc023c4c0b8846b80f13e263b8d74a8\"><\/div>\n<p>Sunspot activity is \u2063anticipated to peak in early 2025. The sun\u2019s energy originates at its \u2064nuclear core, where hydrogen nuclei fuse into helium.<\/p>\n<p>A\u200c radiation envelope of hydrogen and helium ions surrounds this small core (about a quarter of the surface radius). A convection mantle further covers this zone with the \u200dphotosphere revealing the visible layer, further surrounded by the chromosphere and corona.<\/p>\n<p>As a glimpse of the peculiar nature\u200d of our closest\u2062 star, the sun\u2019s average \u2064density (mass-per-volume) compares to polyvinyl chloride (the plastic used for \u2064plumbing), while\u200b Earth\u2019s average density \u2064is\u200b that of tin. However, the density of the sun\u2019s core\u2064 is 13 times that of lead \u2014\u200d indicating the enormous pressure from the\u200d sun\u2019s mass toward the center.<\/p>\n<p>You and I and everything that surrounds \u200bus on our \u200cplanet\u200d are composed of cold\u2063 matter\u200c that radiates \u200cenergy in the infrared portion of the \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/michael-flynns-brother-takes-over-command-of-us-army-pacific\/\" title=\"Michael Flynn's Brother Takes Over Command of US Army Pacific\">electromagnetic spectrum<\/a>. By contrast, stars are\u2063 comprised of compressed\u200c plasma: atomic nuclei along with unbound electrons all too hot to combine to form atoms. Without these intermittent layers to ameliorate the sun\u2019s energy, we would literally be baked to a crisp.\u2064 The solar wind also \u2063radiates high-energy\u2062 particles, but Earth\u2019s\u2064 magnetic field deflects these effects.<\/p>\n<p>Because the convection mantle is not rigid, the sun\u2019s equator rotates angularly faster \u2064than its poles, causing internal shear\u2062 strain.\u2062 This\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/get-ready-for-americas-next-great-solar-eclipses\/\" title=\"Prepare for America's upcoming spectacular solar eclipses.\">solar\u200b dynamism yields irregular electromagnetic flares<\/a> from the surface, along with internal turbulence to switch \u200dthe magnetic poles. Sometimes these \u2064flares\u200b escape beyond the sun in a phenomenon called coronal mass ejections, one of which electrified \u2062telegraph wires in\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-carrington-event\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">September 1859<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s an <strong>Orbital Rhythm<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n<p>Why\u2064 do solar\u2062 eclipses seem so occasional? Technically,\u2063 the moon\u2019s shadow on the Earth occurs more frequently than \u2064Earth\u2019s shadow on the moon, as \u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GnZ3dogED7w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jared Owen<\/a> briefly animates. Yet\u2063 far more people witness lunar eclipses than solar \u200dones.<\/p>\n<p>This \u2062is due to the former being visible throughout the entire nighttime\u200b sky, whereas the moon\u2019s blockage follows\u200c a \u2062narrow\u200c trace\u2063 that is only a few dozen miles.\u200c These courses also usually occur over \u2063uninhabited regions such as oceans and \u2062deserts.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Make \u200bSure to Protect Your \u2063Eyes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov\/SEhelp\/safety.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cautions<\/a> viewers \u2063to avoid looking at the eclipse directly except at totality (when only the corona is visible),\u200d as\u2064 the sun\u2019s near-infrared and\u200c ultraviolet radiation can \u200bdamage the retina without our realization. To avoid \u200beye damage, one can \u2063purchase certified eclipse \u200ceye shades as filters to safely enjoy such an uncommon and awesome event.<\/p>\n<p>If you miss both of these eclipses, you\u2019ll \u2062have to wait until <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/3\/35\/SE2045Aug12T.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045<\/a>, for \u200cthe next \u2064sweeping affair\u200c (unless you go overseas).<\/p>\n<p>Solar eclipses hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oNH3akWXaV8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">special place<\/a> in our consciences \u2014 perhaps due\u2064 to their beauty and comparative \u2064rarity.
