Rick Scott\u200d (R-FL), expressing his concerns. He also questioned Attorney General Merrick \u2063Garland, \u200casking, &#8220;Who is\u200b being held accountable for this?!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Declassified Ruling Reveals FBI Misuse<\/h3>\n<p>The ruling, made by \u2064the Foreign\u2063 Intelligence Surveillance Court in April and recently declassified by Director of National Intelligence \u200cAvril Haines, disclosed \u200cthat an FBI analyst inappropriately conducted four search queries on the names of a U.S. senator and a state senator in June 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Although the analyst had information\u200d suggesting\u2062 that the legislators were targets of a foreign intelligence\u200c entity, the ruling stated that the queries did not meet search standards.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the ruling revealed that an official had used a state judge&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-releases-list-of-president-trumps-accomplishments-and-it-is-historic\/\" title=\"White House Releases List of President Trump\u2019s Accomplishments \u2013  And It Is Historic!\">social security number<\/a> to conduct a search after \u2064the judge had filed a complaint\u2062 with the FBI.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe FBI improperly \u2064used an intelligence \u200cdatabase (again) to search for information about\u2064 a U.S. \u200csenator \u2063and other state officials,\u201d criticized House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH)\u2064 in response to\u200d the ruling. He emphasized the need for Congress to rein in\u2062 the FBI&#8217;s power.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Reforms to FISA&#8217;s Section 702<\/h3>\n<p>Both \u200cChairman Jordan and his Democratic\u2062 counterpart, ranking member Rep.\u2064 Jerry Nadler (NY), are advocating for \u2062reforms \u2063to FISA&#8217;s section 702, which is set to expire \u200bthis year. He argues\u2063 that the use\u200b of section 702 against \u2063&#8221;foreign governments and related entities&#8221; directly impacts the privacy of Americans who have legitimate reasons to communicate with foreign governments.<\/p>\n<p>Senator\u2064 Mike Lee (R-UT) expressed his\u2063 support for a &#8220;clean&#8221; reauthorization of FISA 702, highlighting the importance of protecting the Fourth Amendment and centuries of legal precedent.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, House Intel Committee Chair Mike Turner (R-OH) has appointed Rep. Darin LaHood (R-IL) to lead a working \u200bgroup in crafting reform proposals. Turner, who \u200backnowledges \u2062the necessity of FISA authority, believes that there is no support in Congress for a clean reauthorization and suggests a significant \u2064overhaul \u2062that could limit or \u2064eliminate the FBI&#8217;s access to the \u2063tool.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration, on the other hand, is urging for a reauthorization\u200c of the provision without any\u2064 changes. However, they \u200cface vocal\u200c objections from key members of Congress,\u200d making it a challenging task\u200c to achieve before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Last week&#8217;s\u2063 ruling follows a\u2062 court opinion declassified \u2063by Haines \u2062in May,\u2062 which revealed the FBI&#8217;s improper use of FISA&#8217;s section 702 in over 278,000 instances prior to the recent reforms.
