It also \u200ccould force America to \u200d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/greta-thunberg-is-wrong-americans-should-be-first-in-line-for-american-made-vaccines\/\" title=\"Greta Thunberg Is Wrong. Americans Should Be First In Line For American-Made Vaccines.\">send troops<\/a> to\u200b fight Russia \u2062in Ukraine if fighting resumes after\u2062 a ceasefire or peace agreement.<\/p>\n<p>NATO\u2063 members \u200cagreed at the Vilnius Summit to expedite membership for Ukraine but declined to provide a timeline. According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, NATO will issue \u2062Ukraine an invitation \u2062to join the alliance \u200c\u201cwhen allies agree \u200band conditions\u200d are met.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-913872797\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-656bb5e2b64e1ae97e98538bed8b83be fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-656bb5e2b64e1ae97e98538bed8b83be\"><\/div>\n<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially condemned this position as\u2064 \u201cunprecedented and absurd\u201d because he wanted a concrete timeline for NATO\u2063 membership with clear\u200b requirements for his country to meet. Zelensky later moderated his position, however, probably because\u2063 he \u200brecognized NATO\u2019s membership offer and promises of security commitments were still significant wins for his country.<\/p>\n<p>Biden said Ukraine is not ready for NATO membership and that admitting the\u200c country while it was at war \u2062with Russia could \u2063start\u200b a third world war.\u200c But the\u2062 president also \u2062stated that Ukrainian membership in NATO is inevitable after\u2064 the\u2063 war ends, saying during his visit to Finland, \u201cIt\u2019s \u2064about \u200bwhen they can join, and they \u2064will join\u2062 NATO.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So how \u200dcan NATO membership for Ukraine be off the table while the war is still raging, but not \u200dlater, when the war could\u200b easily resume after a ceasefire or peace \u200cagreement\u2064 is\u2063 violated?<\/p>\n<p>This decision ignores Putin\u2019s adamant\u200b opposition to\u2062 Ukraine joining NATO for supposed security reasons \u200cand because he believes it is in Russia\u2019s sphere of influence. Putin also probably opposes Ukraine joining\u2064 NATO because he fears the\u200c effect that a free and thriving democratic Ukraine \u200dwould have on Russia as he strips fundamental freedoms from the Russian people and transforms the country into an autocracy.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-13691c80ac722b681f1075d4e35b0c2c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-13691c80ac722b681f1075d4e35b0c2c\"><\/div>\n<p>Given \u2063these factors, the pathway for NATO membership\u2062 offered by Biden and NATO\u2063 members could have two dangerous consequences for European and \u2062American\u2063 security.<\/p>\n<p>First, the assurance that Ukraine will join NATO \u2062after the war may extend this conflict and make peace negotiations \u200dmuch \u200cmore \u200cdifficult. As hard\u2062 as it \u200cwill be to get\u2062 Putin to agree to a ceasefire or peace talks, the prospect\u2063 of guaranteed\u2064 NATO membership for\u2063 Ukraine after \u2064the fighting ceases could \u200bmake a settlement impossible and convince Putin to continue the\u200c war indefinitely. I\u2063 see zero chance that Putin will agree to any settlement as long as it has been\u200c predetermined that Ukraine will join the alliance after the war.<\/p>\n<p>Second, and\u200c even more serious, is the real possibility that, if a ceasefire \u2064could somehow be arranged and NATO membership\u200b for Ukraine followed, Putin would invade Ukraine again despite its membership in the alliance. \u200cPutin\u2019s strong sensitivity about Ukraine \u2064joining NATO may mean he would not be deterred from attacking the country again if it became a member. Ukraine\u2019s \u200bmembership could even \u200dembolden him to attack.<\/p>\n<p>If this happened, the United States would be required\u200b under Article 5\u200d of the \u2064North Atlantic Treaty to \u2062treat a Russian attack against a fellow NATO member as an attack against the United\u2062 States \u200cand provide whatever military assistance is necessary to defend Ukraine, including the possibility of deploying U.S. troops and sea and air power in\u2062 the region. This could \u200dbe the start of the third world\u200b war that Biden says he wants to avoid.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-68054c652e45ff11f6ef3e3183aebf48 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-68054c652e45ff11f6ef3e3183aebf48\"><\/div>\n<p>Moreover, this goes against what most Americans want in U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/the-red-wave-of-conservative-women-elected-to-congress\/\" title=\"The Red Wave of Conservative Women Elected to Congress\">foreign policy<\/a>: an America First approach\u2062 that keeps our brave servicemembers out of unnecessary and unending wars. It\u2064 makes no sense for\u2063 the United States to consent to a possible future situation\u2063 when it would be forced to send American troops to fight in a country like Ukraine, \u2064where it has no \u2063strategic interests.<\/p>\n<p>There is a better way \u2063to avoid such calamitous outcomes and bring the war in Ukraine to a close, possibly permanently.\u200c As I discussed in a June 2023\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/19\/foreign-policy-blob-starts-to-admit-a-ukraine-ceasefire-is-inevitable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Federalist<\/a> \u2064article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/how-promising-nato-membership-to-ukraine-could-lead-to-world-war-iii\/\" title=\"Potential World War III Risks Arise from NATO's Offer of Membership to Ukraine.\">foreign policy experts increasingly<\/a> believe Ukraine must agree to a ceasefire\u2064 because it is running out of troops and because the most likely outcome of\u200b the conflict is not a complete Ukrainian victory but a bloody\u2062 stalemate. The limited success of Ukraine\u2019s counteroffensive due to well-defended Russian troops appears to be a sign of this.<\/p>\n<p>Peace talks, or at least\u2062 an agreement for a ceasefire,\u2062 must begin as soon as possible. The Biden administration \u200cshould drop \u2063its opposition to a negotiated solution and convince Ukrainian\u2064 officials to \u2062end their opposition to peace talks.\u2062 Biden should propose a plan \u2063to stop the killing \u2063and address territorial issues through negotiations later.<\/p>\n<p>Because NATO membership \u200cfor Ukraine is\u200c so provocative\u200c for Putin, this \u200cidea should be put on hold for an\u200c extended period, maybe \u206325 years. Such a decision by the United States and NATO members might\u200c open the door to peace talks.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of offering \u2063NATO membership, alliance members should step up their efforts\u2064 to arm and fortify Ukraine after a\u200c ceasefire \u2064or peace settlement to discourage Russia from invading again. \u2063This would be a security pact to ensure, unlike today, that Ukraine is \u2062fully armed \u200dto defend itself against \u2063a \u200dfuture Russian attack.<\/p>\n<p>This is the time for principled and realistic leadership in the Ukraine\u2062 conflict to find a way to end the fighting. This means America \u200cand its NATO allies must make permanently ending the war their priority and abandon the \u2062offer\u200d to \u200badmit Ukraine as a NATO member after the war ends\u2062 or in the near future. Congress must convince Biden to drop his approach to this conflict, \u2064which could extend the war\u200d or engage\u2062 U.S. troops in a conflict with Russia that could result in World War\u200c III.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-11059ed7d04b6268244c452e212ceaf3 fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-11059ed7d04b6268244c452e212ceaf3\"><\/div>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">    \t\t\t\t\t   \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden&#8217;s recent commitment to admit Ukraine post-war may complicate peace negotiations and potentially lead to US military involvement if conflict reignites.
