The suspect, Rodney Thomas Sr., is facing charges for \u200cviolating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, a federal misdemeanor offense.<\/p>\n<p>The majestic bird that was killed had been living in Mount Pleasant, \u2064a Pittsburgh suburb, for nearly 20 years. Locals had even given the eagle the name &#8220;Sam,&#8221; after the character in Disney&#8217;s\u200d Muppet Vision 3D, according\u200c to the New York Post.<\/p>\n<p>If convicted, Thomas could\u200c face \u2064a fine of up to $100,000 and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/arrest-made-in-killing-of-bald-eagle-nfl-players-family-indicted-by-grand-jury\/\" title=\"NFL player's family indicted for killing bald eagle, arrest made.\">maximum jail\u2064 sentence<\/a>\u2064 of one year.\u2063 The \u2063indictment alleges that Thomas shot and killed the mature bald \u200ceagle with an air rifle on or about May\u2064 12, 2023, in Mount\u2062 Pleasant, as reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. \u200dAttorney Eric Olshan emphasized the importance of protecting bald eagles, stating, &#8220;This Office remains committed \u200dto investigating and prosecuting environmental and wildlife offenses under federal law, including the unlawful\u2062 killing of\u200c bald eagles \u2014 the United States&#8217; national bird since 1782.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NFL \u200dsafety Rodney Thomas\u2019 \u2064father arrested for fatally\u2063 shooting bald eagle \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uWVKHsLEKN\">https:\/\/t.co\/uWVKHsLEKN<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UA8LBYOOma\">pic.twitter.com\/UA8LBYOOma<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 New\u200d York Post (@nypost) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nypost\/status\/1683024414286258176?\">July 23, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Washington\u2062 County District Attorney Jason Walsh \u2063expressed his\u200d commitment to bringing justice in\u200d this \u2063case, saying, &#8220;A symbolic species such as\u200b the \u200cbald eagle deserves our protection. My office, along with the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office, the\u200d Pennsylvania\u2064 Game Commission, and the \u2063Mount Pleasant Police Department worked diligently coordinating with each other\u200b to identify and charge the\u200d individual responsible and bring him to justice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064suspect had admitted to the Pennsylvania Game Commission\u200c in May, as reported\u200c by Fox News. \u200dThe slain eagle was part of a pair that\u2063 had recently \u200bgiven birth to two eaglets.<\/p>\n<p>Linda Carnevali, a bird lover in the \u2063neighborhood,\u2063 expressed her devastation over the incident,\u200d stating,\u2064 &#8220;We&#8217;re devastated that \u200dthis would happen, and we don&#8217;t understand why\u2062 somebody would do this.&#8221; \u200cShe added, &#8220;We have taken it very\u2063 personally and feel that the \u200cmission to bring this to justice \u2062is deserved and necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The suspect&#8217;s name was not made public until recently. Carnevali had been in contact\u200c with\u200b the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office in \u2064Pittsburgh, seeking updates on\u2062 the investigation.
