This time, they are\u2064 making the\u2064 bikes \u2063in India with domestic partners\u200b to bring prices below 233,000 rupees ($2,841).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese \u2062are aspirational brands,\u201d said Kotak \u2064Securities auto analyst Rishi \u200cVora. \u201cFor people who were thinking of buying a Harley \u2063or Triumph\u2062 earlier, the price points weren\u2019t accessible. Now, they are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u2064 similar, near-simultaneous change in approach by two of the\u200c industry\u2019s most storied brands represents one of\u2063 the biggest challenges\u200b to Royal\u200d Enfield\u2019s virtual monopoly \u2062in\u200d high-end motorcycles, coming at a time of rising spending in India \u200bin\u200c premium segments across categories as varied\u200c as\u2064 mobile phones and cars.<\/p>\n<p>Such is \u2064the\u2062 threat, the back-to-back launches pushed\u2063 Royal Enfield \u200cmaker Eicher Motors\u2019 stock price\u200c down as much\u200c as 12.5% \u200band prompted brokerages to flag\u200d earnings risk for \u2063at least two years \u2013 even though\u200b Harley-Davidson and Triumph sales currently pale in comparison to \u200dthose of Royal Enfield.<\/p>\n<p>The pricing and brand cachet\u200b of the Harley-Davidson X440 and Triumph Speed 400 could cut Royal Enfield\u2019s share of India\u2019s\u200b 250 cc-plus segment to 75% from over 90%, Kotak\u2064 said. Royal Enfield\u2019s \u200bnearest model\u2064 is the Classic \u2062350 starting at 193,000 rupees.<\/p>\n<p>Eicher declined to comment ahead of \u200bits quarterly earnings\u2064 announcement. Harley-Davidson did not respond to a\u200c request for \u200dcomment. Triumph said it\u200d would significantly increase its dealer network to\u200c around 100 dealers \u2062over the \u200dnext 12 months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ROYAL CHALLENGE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new models mark a return to\u200d India for Harley-Davidson \u2063and a huge step up\u2064 for Triumph, but they are\u200b up against Royal Enfield\u2019s large number of\u200b showrooms, strong after-sales service network and entrenched fan base for a 100-plus-year-old brand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs there going \u2064to be a challenge to Royal Enfield? Yes. \u200cIs it going to be a major one? It can\u2019t be immediately,\u201d said \u200dShubhabrata Marmar, co-founder of automotive content platform MotorInc. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRoyal Enfield built the community, and have \u200bbeen iterating their\u200d showrooms to be ever classier places that have the feel\u200c of an international, \u2063retro, cool, chic brand.\u201d   \u200d    <\/p>\n<p>Rival heritage brands have \u2062made little inroads against Royal Enfield,\u200b such\u2064 as Mahindra\u2064 &#038; Mahindra\u2019s Yezdi and Jawa or BMW\u2019s eponymous brand that the \u2064German automaker manufactures\u2064 with local partner TVS\u200b Motor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you buy the vehicle, everything else disappears. The pricing and the showroom disappear. It\u2019s you, your \u2063motorcycle and those trips to the service centre,\u201d said\u200c Varun Painter, editor of motorcycle content at PowerDrift.<\/p>\n<p>Harley-Davidson spent a \u2062decade importing its ultra-premium motorcycles before exiting the market and shuttering most\u2062 of its dealer network \u200cin 2020. It sold fewer than 30,000 \u200cmotorcycles \u2013 less than the number\u200d of bikes Royal Enfield \u2064sells\u200d each month.<\/p>\n<p>It then partnered Hero \u200bMotoCorp, the world\u2019s largest motorcycle maker, to develop and sell a range of Harley-Davidson \u2062branded bikes in India, starting with the \u2064X440.<\/p>\n<p>Triumph \u2063was selling about 1,200 motorcycles annually in India when, also in 2020, \u200bit tied up with Bajaj Auto to build \u200bmid-capacity \u200cbikes, with Bajaj handling distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Triumph said it has received \u2063orders for over \u206314,000 Speed 400\u2064 bikes, \u200cexceeding its total India sales of\u2064 the past decade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALONG FOR THE RIDE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The premium segment \u200caccounts for under 10% of sales in a country where most people opt for cheaper means \u200bof transport to \u200bnavigate heavy traffic and skirt rising fuel prices.
