Jordan, Biggs condemn FBI FISA warrant abuses\">court opinion released<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The opinion from\u2063 the Foreign Intelligence \u2062Surveillance Court stated that the FBI \u200cconducted searches on an unidentified U.S. senator, state senator,\u200b and judge \u200cusing powers derived from Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance \u200bAct. However, the judge found that the conditions for the searches were not met, as reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/4110850-fbi-improperly-used-702-surveillance-powers-on-us-senator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In June 2022, an analyst conducted four \u200cqueries of Section 702 information using the last names\u200c of a U.S. senator and a state senator, without proper limitations, according to the court opinion from \u200cJudge Rudolph Contreras.<\/p>\n<p>Section 702 allows\u200b intelligence agencies\u2062 to\u200d obtain online communications \u200cof foreign\u2062 nationals without a warrant.<\/p>\n<p>The court acknowledged that \u200da &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fbi-inappropriately-used-spy-powers-on-u-s-senator-court-says\/\" title=\"FBI Misused Spy Powers on U.S. Senator, Court Rules\">specific foreign intelligence service<\/a>&#8221; was \u2064investigating two of the individuals, but the FBI failed to provide the \u200cnecessary \u2062criteria for the searches, as determined by the National Security Division at the\u2064 Department of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>One of the searches \u2064was conducted on a judge who had accused a \u2062police chief of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/amid-mounting-opposition-democrats-move-forward-on-stalled-justice-dept-nominee\/\" title=\"Amid Mounting Opposition, Democrats Move Forward on Stalled Justice Dept. Nominee\">civil rights violations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According\u2064 to the opinion, a &#8220;Staff Operations Specialist ran a\u200b query using the Social Security number of a state judge who\u2063 &#8216;had\u2062 complained to [the] FBI about alleged \u2064civil right \u200bviolations perpetrated by \u2063a municipal chief of police.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Judge Contreras \u2064noted that the FBI\u200c has improved its application of the querying standard \u2063since these mistakes were revealed. However, previous documentation from the case indicates that\u200c Section 702 was misused over 278,000 times to collect\u2063 information on American citizens.<\/p>\n<p>The court\u200b opinion was released after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued \u200dto make it public. The opinion, dated April 2023, highlights \u2063the need\u2063 for fundamental \u2063reforms \u2062as Congress debates \u2062reauthorizing Section 702.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u2062 FBI continues to break the rules put \u2063in place to protect Americans, running illegal searches on public officials including a U.S. senator,\u200b and it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-gun-policies-concern-second-amendment-advocates\/\" title=\"Biden gun policies concern Second Amendment advocates\">long past time<\/a> for Congress to step in.
