Version: 4.0.47--><h2>A Deadly Threat:\u200c The Rise of Xylazine in the Illegal Drug Market<\/h2>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A cheap, flesh-rotting horse tranquilizer that is flooding into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/congressional-report-opioid-overdoses-cost-u-s-1-trillion-annually\/\" title=\"Congressional Report: Opioid Overdoses Cost U.S.  Trillion Annually\">illegal drug market<\/a><\/a> in the U.S. has\u200c the\u2064 Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) alarmed.<\/p>\n<p>Xylazine, called \u201ctranq\u201d on \u2062the\u2064 street, is mass-manufactured in China and has recently proliferated on the streets of San Francisco, Philadelphia, and New York.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201czombie drug\u201d causes skin lesions\u2063 that look like\u2064 flesh is being eaten off, sometimes down to the bone, and can slow\u200c a person\u2019s \u200dheart and breathing until they stop, leaving users \u2063catatonic \u200bor dead.<\/p>\n<p>Drug dealers \u200dfrequently mix Xylazine with fentanyl to\u200d prolong the \u200bhigh,\u200c creating\u200c a potentially deadly cocktail,\u2062 but \u201ctranq\u201d is often mixed with other drugs like meth and cocaine as well.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>The DEA&#8217;s Concern<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Xylazine is\u2064 making an already deadly \u2062drug crisis even\u2062 more dangerous.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cXylazine\u2062 is making the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sen-cruz-only-billionaires-human-traffickers-and-fentanyl-dealers-are-better-off-under-biden\/\" title=\"Sen Cruz: Only Billionaires, Human Traffickers, and Fentanyl Dealers Are Better Off Under Biden\">deadliest drug threat<\/a>\u2062 our country has ever faced, fentanyl, even\u2064 deadlier,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/alert\/dea-reports-widespread-threat-fentanyl-mixed-xylazine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> DEA Administrator Anne Milgram\u200d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dea-issues-public-safety-alert-amid-surge-of-counterfeit-pills\/\" title=\"DEA issues public safety alert amid surge of counterfeit pills\">public safety alert<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Milgram said the DEA has seized xylazine and fentanyl mixtures in 48 states.<\/li>\n<li>In\u200c 2022, the DEA\u200c found \u200dxylazine \u2062in about 23% of the fentanyl powder and 7% of the fentanyl pills seized by the agency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">Increased Risk and\u2064 Challenges<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Users face a higher risk of\u200d fatally overdosing when\u2063 fentanyl\u200c is mixed with \u201ctranq,\u201d the\u2062 DEA said.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cPeople \u200dwho inject drug mixtures containing xylazine\u2064 also can\u2062 develop severe wounds, including \u2062necrosis\u2014the rotting\u200d of human tissue\u2014that may lead to\u200d amputation,\u201d the DEA said.<\/li>\n<li>In \u200cthe three\u200b and a half\u2063 years from January 2019 to June 2022, the number of fentanyl deaths each month \u200bthat involved xylazine spiked from\u200c about \u20632.9% to 10.9% in 20\u200d states and the \u200dDistrict of Columbia, the Centers for \u200cDisease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7226a4.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in June.<\/li>\n<li>Narcan, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/flesh-rotting-zombie-drug-tranq-has-dea-alarmed\/\" title=\"DEA Concerned about Flesh-Rotting Zombie Drug 'Tranq'\">emergency opioid \u200creverse medicine<\/a>, does not work on \u201ctranq\u201d since xylazine is not an opioid. The DEA still recommends administering Narcan in an overdose situation in case they have ingested \u2063other \u2062drugs.<\/li>\n<li>Routine toxicology screens do not\u2063 detect xylazine either, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-alerts-health-care-professionals-risks-patients-exposed-xylazine-illicit-drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s \u200d(FDA) November alert to healthcare professionals about \u200bxylazine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">Legislation and\u2063 Local Actions<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cTranq\u201d is also not currently a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chair-of-psychology-department-at-columbia-pens-book-about-taking-heroin-ecstasy-meth-bath-salts\/\" title=\"Chair Of Psychology Department At Columbia Pens Book About Taking Heroin, Ecstasy, Meth, Bath Salts\">federally controlled substance<\/a>, making it more easily\u2063 available for purchase than illicit drugs like heroin, although some \u2062states have implemented restrictions.<\/li>\n<li>Earlier this year, lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/29\/health\/xylazine-tranq-controlled-substance\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> bipartisan legislation in Congress that would have \u2062classified xylazine as a Schedule III drug under \u200dthe Controlled Substances Act, but so far no \u2064such legislation has passed.<\/li>\n<li>Ohio decided \u2063to take action on its own to crack down on \u201ctranq.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In March, Republican Governor Mike DeWine <a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/OHIOGOVERNOR\/2023\/03\/29\/file_attachments\/2451030\/Signed%20EO%202023-08D.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed<\/a> an executive order classifying xylazine as a Schedule III controlled substance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\">City Responses<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Major cities on both the East and West \u200ccoasts are scrambling to address\u200b the presence of \u2064\u201ctranq\u201d on their streets.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTranq\u201d recently hit the streets of New York with \u201castonishing\u201d speed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox5ny.com\/news\/xylazine-hitting-new-york-city-with-astonishing-speed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according<\/a> to\u200c law \u2064enforcement.<\/li>\n<li>This week, San Diego Mayor\u200b Todd\u2062 Gloria held a press conference where city leaders addressed the dangers \u200cof xylazine\u2063 on the street.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf it is anything like fentanyl, \u2062just\u2062 a few years ago we \u200bonly had a handful of fentanyl overdose cases and\u200c now we have hundreds. We hope that we don\u2019t have something similar with tranq,\u201d Gloria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsandiego.com\/news\/local\/san-diego-leaders-address-looming-threat-of-new-street-drug-tranq\/3266730\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>like necrosis and can lead to amputations.
