This primary is one of\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-depth-desantis-seeks-campaign-boost-in-deep-red-utah-where-conservatives-are-wary-of-trump\/\" title=\"DeSantis aims to gain support in conservative Utah, where Trump skepticism prevails.\">15 contests taking place \u200cnationwide<\/a> on &#8220;Super Tuesday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With seven months to go \u2062before the caucus clash,\u2063 it seems \u2062that Utah voters \u200care\u200d not\u2063 particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of seeing former President Donald Trump&#8217;s name on the \u200cballot. This \u2064presents a glimmer of opportunity for the dozen candidates struggling to gain traction against the \u2062dominant frontrunner in the GOP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dems-lost-all-credibility-on-social-distancing-after-biden-celebrations\/\" title=\"Dems Lost All Credibility On Social Distancing After Biden Celebrations\">presidential race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Florida\u2064 Governor Ron DeSantis, one \u200dof the underdog\u2063 candidates seeking to \u200bderail Trump&#8217;s 2024 presidential drive, recognizes\u200d this opportunity. He recently made two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-throws-support-behind-newsom-urges-voters-to-reject-recall\/\" title=\"Biden Throws Support Behind Newsom, Urges Voters To Reject Recall\">campaign appearances<\/a> in the Salt Lake City\u2063 area, aiming to win over Utah \u200dvoters and weaken\u200c Trump&#8217;s path to the \u2063nomination.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;The more people see Gov.\u2063 DeSantis and hear \u200dhis forward-thinking plan for our nation&#8217;s comeback, \u2063the more inspired \u200bthey\u200d become to vote for him for president,&#8221; said DeSantis&#8217;s campaign spokesman Andrew Romeo.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not DeSantis&#8217;s first visit\u2063 to Utah. \u200dIn April, even before officially \u2064declaring his candidacy, he was\u200b the keynote speaker at the Republican \u200bParty\u200c State Convention. During his\u200c speech, he \u2062referred to Florida as the &#8220;Utah of the Southeast,&#8221; emphasizing the state&#8217;s importance in the\u200c presidential race.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2170939\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2016\/10\/12\/GettyImages-516460394-1200x1075.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<h2>Utah: A Stronghold of Republican Support<\/h2>\n<p>Utah is known as one of the most conservative \u200bstates in the country. Republicans hold supermajorities in the \u200bstate \u2062Legislature, and a \u200bDemocrat has not been \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/twice-failed-candidate-beto-orourke-considering-run-for-texas-governor\/\" title=\"Twice-Failed Candidate Beto O\u2019Rourke Considering Run For Texas Governor\">elected governor<\/a>\u2064 since 1980.<\/p>\n<p>For over\u200b 80 years,\u2063 Utah voters have consistently elected Republicans to \u2062Congress. The last \u200dtime a\u2062 Utah Democrat won a congressional race was in \u20622018,\u200c and \u2062even\u200d then, it was\u200d only for one\u2063 term.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to presidential\u2063 elections, Utah has consistently voted\u2063 for Republican candidates. However, there has been some\u2063 hesitation towards Donald Trump. In the 2016 Republican presidential caucuses, he finished third behind Ted Cruz and John Kasich. Although he ultimately won the state\u2064 in \u2063the \u2062general\u2063 election, his\u200d percentage of the\u2064 overall vote was lower than \u200cprevious Republican candidates.<\/p>\n<p>This shortfall was partly due to the independent candidacy of Evan McMullin, a conservative and former Republican. In Utah, McMullin received\u2062 a significant \u2063portion of the vote, primarily from Mormon voters who were critical of Trump. McMullin&#8217;s performance was the\u200d best by a\u2062 third-party candidate in \u200cany single\u2063 state since 1992.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2020 election, without\u2063 any primary challenges or third-party \u2062presence, Trump easily\u200d defeated Joe \u2062Biden\u200c in Utah. However, Biden&#8217;s percentage\u2063 of the \u2064vote was the highest for a Democratic presidential nominee since 1964.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3754271\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/03\/29\/Mitt-Romney-1228645404.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<h2>Utah&#8217;s Trump Critics<\/h2>\n<p>Utah is home to prominent Republicans who \u2062have been vocal \u200cin\u2063 their\u2064 criticism\u200c of Donald Trump. Senator Mitt Romney, in particular, \u2064has\u200c been \u200done of the\u200c former president&#8217;s most outspoken detractors. \u2063Despite facing denouncements from the MAGA wing of the party, Romney \u2062remains popular among Utahans and is expected to secure reelection\u2063 in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Spencer\u2063 Cox \u2063has\u2062 also been\u200d critical of \u200cTrump, holding him responsible for the Capitol breach on\u2063 January 6, 2021. Cox believes that Trump is willing to bring\u200c down the party if he doesn&#8217;t receive the nomination.<\/p>\n<p>As the chairman of the National Governors Association,\u2063 Cox has advocated \u2064for Republican governors to \u200drun for president. He was among the GOP\u200c governors who encouraged Ron DeSantis to \u2062enter the \u20642024 race. While Cox has not officially endorsed DeSantis or any other candidate, \u200dhe looks forward to welcoming DeSantis to Utah.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis is scheduled to meet with \u2064Cox and several state \u200clawmakers who\u2062 will endorse him at the State Capitol in \u200bSalt Lake City.
