Instead, she referred to Florida&#8217;s &#8220;extremist&#8221; leaders and their recent efforts to target liberal ideals.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cExtremists, so-called leaders, for months \u2064have dared to ban books, book bans in this\u2062 year\u200b of\u200c our Lord 2023,\u201d Harris said. \u201cExtremists here in Florida \u2063pass a law\u2063 don&#8217;t \u2064say gay, trying to instill \u2063fear in\u200c our teachers that \u200cthey\u2062 should not live their full life and love who they love.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Harris urged attendees not \u2062to be distracted by attempts to divide\u2064 the country \u200cand emphasized the importance \u2064of unity.<\/p>\n<h3>Controversial\u200d Curriculum Changes<\/h3>\n<p>The updated standards highlight the skills developed by enslaved people that could be applied for their personal benefit. Critics argue\u200b that this approach downplays the horrors of slavery and whitewashes history.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAnd now on top of all of that, they want\u2063 to replace\u2063 history with lies, middle \u2062school students in\u2062 Florida to be\u2064 told that enslaved people benefited from slavery,\u201d Harris said. \u201cHigh schoolers may be\u2063 taught that victims of violence, of\u2062 massacres, were also perpetrators.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>These changes were implemented\u2062 in response to the Stop WOKE Act, signed into law by Governor DeSantis in 2022.\u200c The act mandates that discussions about race be\u200d taught objectively, \u200dwithout indoctrination or persuasion.<\/p>\n<h3>Teaching the Truth<\/h3>\n<p>Vice President Harris stressed the \u200bimportance of \u200bteaching children the truth about \u200dthe nation&#8217;s history, ensuring they are prepared for the world beyond\u200b the classroom.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe will stand united as a country,&#8221; Harris said. &#8220;We know our collective\u200c history. It is our shared history. We\u2062 are all in this together.
