(Florence Lo\/Reuters)<br \/>\n\t<\/figure>\n<p>These companies have voluntarily \u2063committed to allowing \u2063independent testing on their\u2062 AI systems\u200c before they are released to the\u200c general public.<\/p>\n<p>This recent summit follows an earlier\u2063 meeting between Vice President Kamala Harris and leaders of various firms \u200dinvolved in AI products and services.<\/p>\n<p>The rapid\u2063 advancement\u200c of AI, exemplified by last year&#8217;s release\u2063 of\u2063 ChatGPT, has prompted the\u2064 United States and other countries to scramble for regulations, primarily\u200c focused on safety.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) helped coordinate a classified\u2063 briefing on \u200cAI by the White House for \u200bsenators \u2063on \u200cJuly 11.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations Security Council\u200d also held its first-ever meeting on AI regulation on July 18.<\/p>\n<h2>International Coordination<\/h2>\n<p>In its announcement of the voluntary \u2064commitments, \u2062the White House emphasized its coordination with other countries on AI risk.<\/p>\n<p>These states include the \u2062Five\u2064 Eyes partners\u2014Canada, Australia, New\u2062 Zealand, \u200dand \u2064the UK\u2014as\u2064 well as Israel, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, \u2063Brazil, Chile, Mexico,\u200d India, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Kenya, Nigeria, and the\u2064 United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n<p>Notably absent from\u200b the list \u2062are \u200cChina and Russia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think I want to get into the details of\u2064 our diplomacy,&#8221;\u2063 the White House official responded when asked about the United States&#8217; international efforts on AI.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064White House also revealed that\u2063 President Biden \u2064will issue another executive order on AI, although no specific details were provided\u2064 regarding its timing or content.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re examining actions across agencies and departments, given the cross-cutting\u2063 nature of\u200d AI,&#8221; the White House official informed reporters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u2064 president has made\u2062 his priorities clear: prioritizing equity, protecting consumers and workers, and safeguarding\u200b our\u200c national security,&#8221; the official added.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3018192\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/07\/26\/GettyImages-1035331886-1200x800.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tAn AI cancer detection\u200c microscope by Google is \u200cseen during the\u200d World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2018 in Shanghai on \u200dSep. \u200b18, 2018. (STR\/AFP\/Getty Images)<br \/>\n\t<\/figure>\n<p>Equity, distinct from equality, has been a consistent theme in\u2062 the Biden \u2064administration&#8217;s approach to AI.<\/p>\n<p>In\u200b an executive order on &#8220;racial equity&#8221; earlier \u2063this\u200d year, the president \u2062aimed to \u2062incorporate equity into all \u2064&#8221;artificial intelligence \u2064and automated systems in\u2063 the federal government.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The word &#8220;equity&#8221; appears a \u200cdozen times in \u2062the administration&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/leading-ai-companies-commit-to-safeguards-at-meeting-with-biden\/\" title=\"Top AI firms pledge safeguards in meeting with Biden.\">latest national strategic plan<\/a> on AI research and development (pdf).<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, the\u2064 previous plan released \u200cin 2019 under the Trump administration does not mention the word\u200c once\u2064 (pdf).<\/p>\n<h2>Independent Testing<\/h2>\n<p>In May, the Department \u200bof Education published a report on AI that extensively discussed \u200cequity and the potential for algorithmic bias in automated digital systems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The \u200cdepartment believes that biases in AI algorithms \u200cmust be addressed when they introduce or perpetuate unjust discriminatory \u200dpractices in\u200c education,&#8221; the report states, leaving open the question of\u2064 whether some discriminatory practices in education are indeed \u2063just.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;AI systems\u200d and\u200d tools must align with our collective vision for high-quality learning, including equity,&#8221; it adds.<\/p>\n<p>On June\u200d 20,\u200d the day after attending \u200da Silicon \u200cValley fundraiser for his reelection\u200b campaign hosted by LinkedIn co-founder \u200bReid Hoffman, President Biden \u2063met with tech leaders in San Francisco to\u200c discuss AI \u200c&#8221;bias\u200c and \u2062prejudice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2749753\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2018\/12\/27\/reid-hoffman.jpg\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><\/noscript><\/figcaption><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\tLinkedIn Chairman Reid Hoffman at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, Calif. on\u2064 March 30, 2011. \u2064(Justin\u2063 Sullivan\/Getty Images)<br \/>\n\t<\/figure>\n<p>Participants in the meeting included \u2064Joy Buolamwin, founder of the\u2063 Algorithmic Justice League, and Jim Steyer, founder of Common Sense Media\u2063 and the brother of a \u200cbillionaire mega-donor to the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>official said.
