It is best remembered as an act of\u2062 civil disobedience \u200d\u2014 a tax revolt.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u200c Sons of \u2064Liberty\u200d who destroyed the tea\u200c had no\u2062 particular quarrel with the East India Company that owned it.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, those Boston rebels intended \u2064to defy Parliament\u2019s authority by making sure \u2062no one could\u200d pay a tax on the tea.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the Boston \u2064Tea Party did trigger a\u200d series \u2063of events that led to a genuine\u2062 boycott: \u200dthe Continental Association.<\/p>\n<p>After \u200dBritish warships arrived in Boston Harbor in early 1774, \u2063Americans voluntarily refused to consume certain British \u200dimports.<\/p>\n<p>Even this\u2063 mild response to \u2063Britain\u2019s blockade\u200b enraged \u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/sudden-unexplained-deaths-children-brought-floor-uk-parliament-debate\/?ff_content=2019-04-06page\/12page\/2page\/2page\/2page\/12page\/3page\/12page\/3page\/12page\/12page\/3page\/3page\/12page\/2page\/2page\/3page\/12page\/12page\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parliament<\/a> and led directly to the American Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>Wiginton also\u2063 noted a 1791 sugar boycott in which an English \u200cmerchant\u2062 refused \u2063to sell sugar produced by Barbadian slaves.<\/p>\n<p>Much like the Boston Tea Party, this episode rates as an important chain\u2064 in a\u2064 series of events \u200bthat changed history.<\/p>\n<p>For most of the 18th century, \u200cthe British were the most active slave traders in the Atlantic world.<\/p>\n<p>After the American Revolution, however, British public opinion turned sharply against the slave trade.<\/p>\n<p>Parliament formally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/history-left-erased-founding-fathers-helped-obliterate-slavery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abolished<\/a> the trade \u200bin 1807.<\/p>\n<p>For decades thereafter, the British Royal Navy \u200cpatrolled the western coast of Africa in a \u2062sincere and largely successful effort to destroy the trafficking\u200b of human beings.<\/p>\n<p>The only other pre-20th century boycott on\u200c Wiginton\u2019s list holds \u2062a\u200d special place in boycott\u2064 history.<\/p>\n<p>In 1880,\u2062 a\u200b group of Irish tenants refused to\u2062 work for a land agent who raised their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-issue-new-eviction-moratorium-just-day-saying-lacked-authority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The community joined in the protest against the greedy land\u2064 agent.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe mailman stopped bringing \u200chim his mail, and businesses in the area \u2064wouldn\u2019t accept his money,\u201d Wiginton wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The\u200c land agent\u2019s name? Captain Charles Cunningham Boycott, namesake of the organized consumer protest.<\/p>\n<p>Two\u200b other\u200b boycotts, both from the early to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nbc-poll-shows-gop-becoming-party-of-blue-collar-workers\/\" title=\"NBC Poll Shows GOP Becoming Party Of Blue-Collar Workers\">mid-20th century<\/a>,\u200d unquestionably changed \u200dhistory.<\/p>\n<p>In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi led a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/reddit-fires-administrator-who-protected-child-rapist-father\/\" title=\"Reddit Fires Administrator Who Protected Child Rapist Father\">successful protest<\/a> against British \u2064colonial\u2062 prohibitions on native Indian salt production.<\/p>\n<p>Both the salt protest \u200cand especially the man himself helped \u2064shape the course of events \u2063that led to Indian independence \u2062in 1947.<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/sowell-searching\/\" title=\"Sowell Searching\">20th century\u2019<\/a>s most important economic protest\u2064 occurred in Montgomery, \u200cAlabama, where a 1955 bus boycott launched the \u200bnational Civil Rights Movement.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 1, 1955, activist Rosa Parks defied segregation laws by refusing to surrender her bus seat to \u200da white passenger.<\/p>\n<p>After her arrest, the Montgomery Improvement Association, led by 26-year-old Reverend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/parker-mlks-dream-speech-message-america-needs-hear-right-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Martin \u2062Luther King, Jr.<\/a>, organized a \u2064citywide bus boycott.<\/p>\n<p>For more than a year, Montgomery\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bud-light-wasnt-the-first-major-boycotts-that-changed-history\/\" title=\"Not the First: Game-Changing Boycotts in History\">black\u200d residents \u2064applied economic pressure<\/a> by refusing to ride\u200d city buses.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. \u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/fried-recent-scotus-decision-major-factor-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Supreme Court<\/a> later declared the segregation\u2064 laws unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly \u200call of Wiginton\u2019s remaining examples \u200cdate to \u200dthe late 20th and\u200d early 21st centuries. \u200bIn most cases, their \u200dhistorical importance does\u2064 not\u200b measure up\u200d to\u2064 those of \u200cthe older boycotts.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, both the \u200clongevity of the practice and the \u2062volume of boycotts show that consumers acting in concert have always had considerable influence.<\/p>\n<p>The post <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/bud-light-wasnt-first-major-boycotts-changed-history\/\">Bud Light Wasn&#8217;t the First: Major Boycotts that \u2063Changed\u2062 History<\/a> appeared \u2063first on <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\">The\u2062 Western Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Bud Light boycott gained attention, yet it&#8217;s not the sole instance of consumer protest.
