Additionally, those who obstructed police \u2063from arresting others may also be excluded.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that\u200b the settlement still requires approval \u2063from a judge and, if approved, \u200bit\u2064 would be one of the most expensive payouts ever made for\u200d mass arrests.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs&#8217; lawyers, representing the\u200b National Lawyers Guild,\u200c a \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/more-electioneering-dirty-facebook-suspends-gop-ad-campaign-days-before-january-georgia-runoff-election\/\" title=\"More Electioneering: Dirty Facebook Suspends GOP Ad Campaign Days Before January Georgia Runoff Election\">left-leaning group<\/a>, accused\u200c the NYPD of violating the \u200cprotesters&#8217; First Amendment rights by using excessive force and making unlawful arrests.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>According to the lawsuit, there were instances where police \u200cofficers physically assaulted\u2063 and kicked protesters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The N.Y.P.D.&#8217;s suppression of dissent has persisted through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/new-york-city-to-pay-13-7-million-to-george-floyd-rioters-for-mass-arrests\/\" title=\"NYC to compensate George Floyd protesters with .7M for mass arrests.\">numerous mayoral administrations<\/a>,&#8221; stated one of the plaintiffs&#8217; lawyers in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the city argued that the \u200dNYPD did not \u200battempt to suppress lawful protests \u2062or infringe upon the protesters&#8217; constitutional right to demonstrate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no history \u2013 or \u200dpresent or future \u2013 of unconstitutional policing,&#8221; read a\u200c memo from Georgia Pestana, an attorney \u2064for the city. &#8220;There is no frequent deprivation of \u200dconstitutional rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the days following Floyd&#8217;s death, approximately 10,000 people were arrested nationwide, and the total\u2064 property damage from the riots \u200damounted \u2064to nearly $2 billion.<\/p>\n<p>In New York, the police arrested just over 2,000 individuals between May 28 and June 7, according to the New York State attorney general&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people took to the streets in New York City, with some engaging in violent behavior. Rioters injured dozens of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/california-sheriffs-tell-newsom-they-wont-enforce-covid-curfew\/\" title=\"California Sheriffs Tell Newsom They Won't Enforce COVID Curfew\">police officers<\/a>, set police cars on fire, vandalized them with graffiti, and looted or damaged at least 450 businesses.<\/p>\n<p>During one incident, two\u2064 NYPD officers in Brooklyn were shot, and one was stabbed in the neck while trying to prevent looting during a protest.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor implemented a citywide curfew for \u2064the first week of June, the first curfew in 75 years, but it was frequently violated by protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Although this is the largest \u2062settlement, it is not the first time New\u2064 York \u2062has\u200b reached an agreement \u2064with protesters who demonstrated over George Floyd.
