U.S. unions are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uaw-seeks-washington-backing-to-pressure-detroit-three-automakers-in-labor-talks\/\" title=\"UAW seeks support from Washington to influence Detroit Three automakers in labor negotiations.\">making bolder contract demands<\/a> in the tighter labor market.<\/p>\n<p>Fain, \u200dwho represents 150,000 U.S. hourly workers at General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler parent \u2064Stellantis, came to Washington on\u200b Wednesday,\u200d a day after \u200dopening talks with GM, to meet with lawmakers and make the case that the union\u2019s demands are reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>Fain gave a slide\u2063 presentation to lawmakers as he argued\u200b workers\u2019 compensation \u2063has not kept up with the nearly $250 \u2064billion in North American\u200d profit raked in \u2064by the three automakers over the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a \u200cvery \u200cuneven playing field right now,\u201d Fain told Reuters on Wednesday after one meeting. \u201cOur workers have regressed. We\u2019ve got \u200dto do better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Detroit Three automakers have said they want to\u200c compensate fairly their hourly workers, \u200bbut \u2062also have stressed a need for greater\u200b cost competitiveness as the industry shifts to electric vehicles, a market dominated by Tesla. \u200c <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best way to provide job\u200d security for our \u206250,000 manufacturing \u200cemployees is by keeping General Motors financially strong,\u201d GM manufacturing chief Gerald Johnson said in a video \u200cthe automaker released on Wednesday on \u200ca website dedicated to the UAW talks.   \u200b  \u2062     <\/p>\n<p>The Detroit \u2063Three \u200dautomakers rely on \u2064representatives in Washington to lobby for their \u2064positions.    <\/p>\n<p>Biden also faces pressure \u2063from former President Donald Trump, who is seeking \u200dthe \u2062Republican \u2064presidential nomination in 2024. On Thursday,\u200b Trump said\u2064 Biden was \u201cwaging war on the U.S. auto industry\u201d through \u201ccrippling\u201d EV \u2062mandates and urged the UAW to endorse him.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s campaign responded \u200bby saying Trump was \u201cthe most anti-union \u2064president in modern history, stacking his cabinet\u200d with anti-union officials.\u201d It added that \u2062under Biden, \u201cmore than 120,000 \u2063auto manufacturing jobs have come back to the United\u2063 States, and new auto factories \u2062are popping up across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Fain has not ruled out striking all three Detroit automakers. A strike\u200b of all three \u200bcould have major economic impacts\u2064 and\u2062 Washington could come under heavy pressure to intervene. <\/p>\n<p>In 2019, GM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/microsoft-earnings-hurt-by-slowing-pc-sales-stronger-dollar\/\" title=\"Microsoft earnings hurt by slowing PC sales, stronger dollar\">fourth-quarter profit<\/a> took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike\u200b that shut down U.S. operations.    <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome \u2063of the\u2063 slides really show how \u200cmuch workers have back-slid while compensation for the top executives is continuing to increase,\u201d said U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal, a Democrat who took part in a labor caucus meeting with Fain. <\/p>\n<p>She said automakers cannot use \u200ban old formula to win labor deals \u2064by simply promising a new plant \u2063or\u200b employment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can\u2019t just be more \u200bjobs in America. They need to be union jobs,\u201d Jayapal said.    <\/p>\n<p><strong>WAKE-UP CALL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UAW \u200bhas made the fate of Detroit Three <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/uaw-will-seek-faster-recognition-in-gms-u-s-joint-venture-battery-plants\/\" title=\"UAW will seek faster recognition in GM\u2019s U.S. joint-venture battery plants\">joint-venture battery plants<\/a> a key focus.\u2063 The\u200d automakers \u2064have emphasized that  the unionization of those plants not wholly owned by the companies is \u2063up to \u200dthe \u200daffected workers.<\/p>\n<p>Representative Donald\u2063 Norcross, \u200ca Democrat \u200cfrom New Jersey, said workers across the\u2062 economy need higher wages and benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are going to get a big wake-up call,\u201d Norcross \u2064said of the Detroit Three. \u201cThere\u2019s a reckoning that people ought to be able to take care of\u2063 their\u200d families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harley Shaiken, a labor professor at the University of California, Berkeley, said the\u00a0UAW is making \u2064the case that its goals are reasonable and that members\u200b will strike if they \u2063do not achieve them. This, he said, sets the stage \u201cfor ways in \u200dwhich political leaders\u2062 could exert pressure on the Detroit automakers, who need all kinds of \u2063things from the\u200d federal\u2062 government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fain met White House\u2063 officials on Wednesday to discuss the union\u2019s bargaining positions, including\u2062 a brief meeting with Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Fain\u2062 also met\u200b with Senate Democratic Leader\u2064 Chuck Schumer and fellow Democratic senators Dick \u200bDurbin, Sherrod Brown, Gary\u200c Peters, Debbie Stabenow and Bob Casey, as\u2063 well as Acting Labor Secretary Julie \u200bSu, a \u200cunion official said. Other meetings were scheduled for the rest\u2064 of the week.<\/p>\n<p>Fain \u2064not only has broken with most major U.S. labor unions in not\u2062 yet endorsing Biden for re-election,\u2064 but has also \u200dpanned \u200bsome administration policies \u2064on electric vehicles.  <\/p>\n<p>Last month, Fain harshly criticized the U.S. Energy Department plan to lend $9.2\u2062 billion to a joint\u200c venture of Ford  and South Korea\u2019s\u200c SK\u200b Innovation to build three U.S. battery plants,\u2063 citing the lower wages paid to workers that are \u2063typically not\u2064 union-represented.<\/p>\n<p>After a meeting with Fain in April, Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont who caucuses with Democrats, criticized a GM-LG Energy Solution\u2063 joint-venture battery plant for paying workers much less than \u200dGM assembly plant employees even though GM benefits from hefty U.S. government\u200b tax credits.
