Robert Oppenheimer&#8217;s life has come under \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pope-francis-to-hold-interfaith-prayer-service-at-birthplace-of-abraham\/\" title=\"Pope Francis To Hold Interfaith Prayer Service At Birthplace Of Abraham\">renewed attention<\/a>. The renowned theoretical physicist,\u2064 set to be played \u2063by Cillian Murphy in Christopher\u200d Nolan&#8217;s new film, was key to the United States&#8217;s Manhattan Project, the quest for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/archaeologists-uncover-ancient-street-food-shop-in-pompeii\/\" title=\"Archaeologists uncover ancient street food shop in Pompeii\">atomic bomb<\/a>. Largely due to his efforts as\u200b director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during\u2063 World War II, the U.S. beat its competitors\u200b in obtaining the first nuclear weapon on \u2064July 16, 1945.<\/p>\n<h3>Who was Oppenheimer?<\/h3>\n<p>Oppenheimer was born in New York City in 1904 to Jewish immigrant parents. He\u200b entered Harvard at the age of 18, then became a professor of theoretical physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of Technology. He is\u200b credited as one of the \u2062founding fathers of theoretical physics. \u2062Oppenheimer\u2064 would marry \u2063Katherine &#8220;Kitty&#8221; \u200dOppenheimer, who he met while teaching\u200d at Berkeley, in 1940. They would \u2064have\u2063 two children together, Peter and Katherine.<\/p>\n<h3>Work on the Manhattan Project<\/h3>\n<p>By the time of his recruitment by Gen. Leslie Groves into the Manhattan Project, the code name for the U.S. effort to \u200cobtain the first atomic\u2062 bomb, in the fall of 1942, Oppenheimer had already been studying a potential atomic bomb for some time. On July 16, 1945, a team \u200dassembled by Oppenheimer gathered in the desert to observe \u200bthe Trinity test, where\u2063 the first atomic\u2062 bomb was successfully detonated. Concerns over his connections reached a head in 1953 when his security clearance was revoked over suspicions from the U.S.\u2063 government. Robert Oppenheimer truly?\">public\u2064 trial drew attention<\/a> and support from scientific figures all around the world.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives claimed that he was a communist and Soviet spy and had passed atomic secrets to the Soviets, leading them to obtain their\u200b own nuclear weapons shortly after the U.S. While Oppenheimer had given money to communist causes, \u200bhe denied\u2062 being a communist or Soviet spy. Defenders of Oppenheimer, such as curator Hayden Peake, point to the fact that he had no role in bringing the two confirmed Soviet spies, Klaus Fuchs and Ted \u200cHall, into the project. They also\u200c note that the Soviets should have been able to get the atomic bomb much sooner if Oppenheimer were truly feeding them information.<\/p>\n<p>However, as historians John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr wrote in Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America, Oppenheimer\u2062 was confirmed to have deep ties with communist organizations before the start of the Manhattan Project, and his attempts to obfuscate this truth draw skepticism on his broader denials. &#8220;He was not simply a casual Popular Front liberal who ignorantly bumped up \u200bagainst the Party in some of the arenas in which it operated,&#8221; they wrote. &#8220;Throughout his life Oppenheimer declined \u2064to provide a\u2062 detailed or accurate accounting of \u200dhis relationship with the CPUSA in the late 1930s \u2063and early 1940s.&#8221; Oppenheimer&#8217;s personal connections with communists were well known. His wife was an \u200bofficial member of the Communist Party of the U.S., formerly working as a writer for a communist paper. Her first husband was killed while serving as a communist political commissar for the Republicans during\u200d the Spanish \u200bCivil \u2063War. His other\u200c lover Jean Tatlock\u200d was a communist as well.<\/p>\n<h3>Death and Legacy<\/h3>\n<p>His record \u2063was\u200d officially cleared prior to his death, with Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson publicly honoring him. Oppenheimer famously became highly critical of the weapon he designed in later years, taking a pacifistic approach to the nuclear\u2063 arms race.
