Robert Oppenheimer&#8217;s life has come\u2063 under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pope-francis-to-hold-interfaith-prayer-service-at-birthplace-of-abraham\/\" title=\"Pope Francis To Hold Interfaith Prayer Service At Birthplace Of Abraham\">renewed attention<\/a>. \u2062The renowned theoretical physicist, set to be\u2064 played by Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan&#8217;s new film,\u200d was key to the \u200bUnited States&#8217;s \u2062Manhattan Project, the quest for the atomic\u2062 bomb. Largely due to his efforts as director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War \u2064II, the U.S. beat its competitors in obtaining the first nuclear weapon on July 16, 1945.<\/p>\n<h3>Who was Oppenheimer?<\/h3>\n<p>Oppenheimer was \u2062born \u2063in New York City in 1904 to Jewish immigrant parents. He entered Harvard at\u2063 the age\u2063 of\u200d 18, \u2064then became \u200ba professor of theoretical physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of Technology. He is credited as one of the founding\u2064 fathers of theoretical physics. Oppenheimer would \u2062marry \u2063Katherine \u2064&#8221;Kitty&#8221;\u2064 Oppenheimer, who he met while \u2062teaching at Berkeley, in\u200d 1940. They would have two children together, Peter and\u200c Katherine.<\/p>\n<h3>Work on the Manhattan Project<\/h3>\n<p>By the time of \u200chis recruitment by Gen. Leslie Groves into the Manhattan Project,\u200d the code\u2062 name for the \u2062U.S. effort \u200bto obtain the first\u2063 atomic bomb, in \u2063the fall of 1942, Oppenheimer had\u2063 already been studying a potential \u200catomic bomb for some time. On July\u200d 16, 1945, \u2062a team \u2064assembled by Oppenheimer gathered in the desert to observe the Trinity test, where the\u2062 first atomic bomb was successfully detonated. Two months later, \u200btwo of the \u200dnewly constructed bombs \u200cwere dropped on the\u2062 Imperial Japanese\u200d cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki,\u2063 bringing\u200b an end to World War II, the most destructive \u200cwar\u2064 in \u2062human\u200b history.<\/p>\n<h3>Controversy and Communist Links<\/h3>\n<p>Throughout his career, Oppenheimer&#8217;s \u2062relationship with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/who-was-the-real-j-robert-oppenheimer\/\" title=\"Who was J. Robert Oppenheimer truly?\">communism drew immense scrutiny<\/a> \u200cand controversy. Concerns over his connections reached a head in 1953 when his security clearance was revoked over suspicions \u200cfrom the U.S. government.\u2062 His\u2062 public trial drew attention\u2064 and support from scientific figures\u2063 all around\u200d the world.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives\u2062 claimed that he was a communist and Soviet spy and \u2063had passed atomic\u200d secrets to the Soviets, leading them to obtain their \u200cown nuclear weapons shortly after the U.S. \u2062While Oppenheimer had given money to communist causes, he denied being a\u2062 communist or \u2063Soviet spy.\u200b Defenders\u200c of Oppenheimer, such as curator Hayden Peake, point to the fact that he had no role\u2064 in bringing the two confirmed Soviet spies, Klaus\u200c Fuchs \u200dand Ted Hall, into \u200cthe project. They also note that the \u200cSoviets \u2063should have been able to\u2064 get the \u2062atomic bomb much \u200dsooner if Oppenheimer were\u200d truly feeding them information.<\/p>\n<p>However, as historians John \u200dEarl Haynes and Harvey Klehr wrote in Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America, Oppenheimer was confirmed to \u200dhave deep ties with communist organizations \u200dbefore the start of the Manhattan Project, and\u200c his attempts\u2062 to \u2064obfuscate this truth draw \u2062skepticism \u200bon his broader denials. &#8220;He was not simply a casual Popular Front liberal who ignorantly bumped up against \u2063the\u200c Party in some of the\u2063 arenas\u200c in which it operated,&#8221; they\u2063 wrote. &#8220;Throughout his life Oppenheimer declined \u200cto\u2064 provide a detailed or accurate accounting of his relationship with the CPUSA in the late 1930s and early\u2063 1940s.&#8221; Oppenheimer&#8217;s personal connections with communists were well known. His wife was\u200d an official member of\u2062 the Communist Party of\u200c the U.S., \u2063formerly working as a writer for a communist paper. Her first\u200d husband was killed while serving as a communist political commissar for the \u2062Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. His other lover Jean Tatlock\u2063 was a communist as well.<\/p>\n<h3>Death and Legacy<\/h3>\n<p>His record was officially cleared prior to his\u200b death, with Presidents John \u200dF. \u200dKennedy\u200b and Lyndon B. \u2063Johnson publicly honoring him.
