Above all else \u200bthe goal is \u2062to keep people from saying things undermine the authority of\u2063 America\u2019s obviously \u200dfoundering left-leaning institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, The Federalist recently got \u200ban email \u2063from \u201cNewsGuard Technologies\u201d \u2014 a relatively new service that\u2019s popped up in\u2063 the \u2064last \u2063few \u200cyears that purports\u200d to \u200crate websites on their\u200c credibility based \u200con some established criteria. \u2064They then\u200b sell their ratings services\u2064 to schools, various corporate entities, \u200dand advertisers looking\u2064 for someone to tell\u200c them what news outlets they can supposedly trust or what websites you don\u2019t want to advertise on for \u2063fear of damaging your brand.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-78590377\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-187926e2a39722c345938ed64aca4a64 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-187926e2a39722c345938ed64aca4a64\"><\/div>\n<p>So how does\u2063 NewsGuard go about making \u200cthose ratings for websites? \u2064Well, it starts with \u2063firing off a series of hostile\u2064 questions to the editors of a website \u2064about weirdly specific aspects of its coverage and demands you answer them in a vain attempt to improve whatever rating they\u2019re\u200d going to give you. Now it\u2019s bad enough that this is an extortion racket, but\u2062 it\u2019s downright insulting to see \u200bthem wheel around a website that publishes\u2063 over a \u200cmillion words a\u200c year, cherry-pick some example of \u200dwhat \u200cthey \u200cthink is problematic coverage, and still demonstrate an inability to\u2062 think critically or fairly about what they\u2019re reading. If it questions\u200c a dominant \u200cnarrative, it does \u200cnot\u2063 compute with \u2062these people. Anyway, let\u2019s\u200c take a look at what we\u2019re dealing with.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><em>My\u200b name \u200bis Chiara\u2064 Vercellone and \u200cI\u2019m an analyst at \u2064NewsGuard \u2064Technologies, a service that reviews\u200d news and information websites based on\u200c a set of credibility criteria, and monitors misinformation trends online.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I am reaching \u2063out because \u2063we\u200b are in the process of updating our analysis of TheFederalist.com and \u200bI have a few questions about the content\u200c published on the site. I am also attaching our currently-published analysis of \u2063The Federalist for your reference.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Just \u2063for reference, Vercellone apparently has a graduate degree in journalism from\u200c Northwestern, which generally vies with Columbia for the best journalism program in the country. Previously, she worked as a \u201cfact checker\u201d for USA Today. I used to work at a publication that, like USA Today, was also\u200d a participant in Facebook\u2019s\u2064 fact-checking program. Facebook\u200d funds the \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/facebook-reduced-reach-of-posts-about-hunter-biden-laptop-in-lead-up-to-2020-election-zuckerberg\/\" title=\"Facebook Reduced Reach of Posts About Hunter Biden Laptop in Lead up to 2020 Election: Zuckerberg\">fact-checking programs<\/a> at these \u2062publications,\u2064 even \u200dthough these same publications\u200d are often required to cover\u2063 Facebook \u2063and Mark Zuckerberg\u200b objectively in their news \u200dpages despite being financially compromised by this.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\/Meta then brags that when \u200ca \u2062\u201cfact checker\u201d they help pay for rates a story as false, they use that rating to downrank and kill \u200d80 percent of the \u2062internet traffic to that story. That\u2019s what they <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Meta\/status\/1017477296943349760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">say in \u2063their own<\/a> \u2064corporate\u200d communications. Given how \u2064often we\u2019ve\u2064 seen Facebook-funded fact-checkers \u200dproduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2020\/06\/30\/fact-check-democratic-party-did-not-found-kkk-start-civil-war\/3253803001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">politically distorted nonsense<\/a>, \u200bthe power given to \u2063these people\u200d ought to be \u2064alarming.<\/p>\n<p>Vercellone\u2063 and everyone else involved in\u2063 these rackets\u200b have convinced themselves they\u2019re performing a valuable public service fighting \u201cmisinformation\u201d \u200cthat nearly always conveniently\u200c aligns\u200d with\u2064 ideological priors, but I\u2019m \u200cnot sure they\u2019ve had\u200c anyone be blunt: Between her time as a \u201cfact checker\u201d and her new gig at NewsGuard, Vercellone is a censor pure and simple. The business model she\u2019s participating in is to \u2062make a profit by\u2062 narrowing the range of\u200d acceptable opinions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1042a58ed34dbfc75234055707f07bc5 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1042a58ed34dbfc75234055707f07bc5\"><\/div>\n<p>Anyway,\u2064 keep all that in mind when we \u2064delve into the quality of analysis that she expects The\u200c Federalist to respond to. She gets right into \u200bit.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>For instance, we recently found some articles\u200d that further\u2063 false or misleading information. For example, this <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/16\/feds-routine-tyranny-suggest-they-arent-as-afraid-of-the-american-people-as-they-should-be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> repeated claims\u2063 that the IRS was hiring \u201ca new army of IRS agents that will \u200bbe used to \u200baudit middle-class\u200b Americans.\u201d However, \u2064the Inflation Reduction Act\u200d roughly allocated $80 billion \u200bto the IRS over 10 years, and most of the new\u2062 hires would\u2063 fill customer service and technology\u2063 roles \u2014 not IRS agent positions.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>OK,\u2064 so the Inflation Reduction\u2062 Act allocated $80 billion to the IRS, and $45 billion of that was specifically allocated \u200bfor tax \u2062enforcement, including \u201clitigation,\u201d \u201ccriminal investigations,\u201d \u201cinvestigative technology,\u201d and \u201cdigital asset monitoring.\u201d The IRS has pledged to \u2063use that money to hire 87,000 new people. \u2062Most of the money is going to tax enforcement,\u2063 so why wouldn\u2019t most of the\u2062 hires\u200c being made be \u2064related to \u2063tax\u200b enforcement in some way? Is it just that we\u2019re hung up on the precise definition of \u201cagent\u201d in this context? Fine, we\u2019ll \u2062assume the IRS is going to hire some agents specifically for auditing. What number specifically constitutes an \u201carmy,\u201d which last I checked, does not have a precise\u2062 numerical definition?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say \u200cthey\u200b hire 10,000 agents for auditing and the remaining 77,000 \u2064are \u200bIT and answering phones. Well, 10,000 people is enough for an infantry division \u2026 is that comparable to an \u201carmy\u201d? It\u2019s even dumber than that sounds \u2063because the original Federalist article NewsGuard is singling out, specifically linked \u200cto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/08\/10\/irs-job-listing-special-agents-must-carry-firearm-be-willing-use-deadly-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another\u2062 article<\/a> about \u200chow the \u2062IRS is currently advertising for jobs that require\u2063 IRS agents to\u200d be \u201c[carrying] a firearm and [being] willing\u200d to use\u2062 deadly force, \u2064if necessary\u201d when it \u2062referenced an \u201carmy\u201d or IRS agents. The IRS currently employs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/factcheck-irs-armed-idUSL1N2ZT296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 2,000 people that carry firearms<\/a>. Is that an \u201carmy\u201d? By the way, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearinvestigations.com\/articles\/2022\/10\/06\/armed_and_beltway-ish_why_more_federal_bureaucrats_than_us_marines_can_pack_heat_857421.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more armed federal bureaucrats now than\u2064 U.S. Marines<\/a> \u2014 is THAT fair to\u2063 compare to \u200ban army?\u2062 Or \u200cis NewsGuard engaged in a really stupid semantic \u2064debate?<\/p>\n<p>What happened was this: Republicans were opposed to Democrats\u2019 Inflation Reduction Act and one of the criticisms they leveled was against its provision beefing up tax enforcement, which is politically\u2063 unpopular. Republican leader \u2063Kevin McCarthy went out and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerMcCarthy\/status\/1557716607144706049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cDemocrats in Washington plan to hire an army\u200b of 87,000 IRS agents so they can audit more Americans like\u2063 you.\u201d \u2062Fearing that this criticism might resonate with the public, \u2064\u201cfact checkers\u201d\u200b immediately sprung into action and tried to establish a counter-narrative quibbling with McCarthy\u2019s use of the word \u201cagents.\u201d \u200d(See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/republicans-call-it-an-army-irs-hires-will-replace-retirees-do-it-says-treasury-2022-08-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/politics\/politifact\/2022\/08\/15\/kevin-mccarthys-mostly-false-claim-about-an-army-of-87000-irs-agents\/65401671007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/11\/politics\/republican-irs-funding-87000-agents\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/08\/31\/irs-is-not-hiring-an-army-of-auditors-whats-really-happening.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he<\/a>re, etc.) Note that \u2062The Federalist article\u200b being singled out by NewsGuard did not\u2063 specify how many \u2062agents \u200dwere being hired or make a specific numerical claim related\u200c to the bill like McCarthy\u200b did. It just said that an \u201carmy\u201d\u2062 of agents\u2062 was being hired.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-80568f166c05127850feb356fb0741d2 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-80568f166c05127850feb356fb0741d2\"><\/div>\n<p>The Federalist \u200bwas not misleading. What\u2019s really misleading \u200cis\u200b here is supposed fact-checkers running\u2063 PR campaigns for the\u2063 IRS and Democratic legislation and leaving people \u2064the\u200d false impression that spending \u2062$45 billion \u200don tax enforcement\u2062 is\u200c just going\u200c to result in IT and customer \u2064service hires,\u200d not more audits of\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/white-house-pause-on-student-loans-only-adding-fuel-to-the-inflation-fire-according-to-expert\/\" title=\"White House Pause on Student Loans Only Adding \u201cFuel to the Inflation Fire\u201d, According to Expert\">middle-class taxpayers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>These <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/13\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-tucker-carlsons-j6-tapes\/\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/03\/06\/newly-released-j6-tapes-show-capitol-police-giving-guided-tour-to-so-called-qanon-shaman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">articles<\/a> claim that Jacob Chansley, commonly known as \u200cthe QAnon Shaman, was \u2064escorted throughout the U.S. Capitol by Capitol Police on Jan.\u2062 6,\u2064 2021. However, Chansley\u2019s guilty plea agreement states that he was repeatedly ordered by police officers to leave the Capitol. \u200bMoreover, in court filings \u200crelated to the trial of other alleged \u200bCapitol rioters, prosecutors stated that the televised footage by Tucker Carlson\u200c showed Chansley\u2019s movements from four minutes, \u2062which \u2063did not\u200b accurately depict Chansley\u2019s \u2063behavior.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Is she under \u2063the \u200cimpression that the first two sentences above are\u2064 mutually exclusive? There is video footage \u200cof at least nine Capitol\u2064 Hill\u2063 police officers escorting Chansley around \u200dthe \u2063Capitol peacefully. Maybe \u2063they did ask him to leave and Chansley was clearly breaking the law \u2014 but the footage does not show Chansley rampaging or acting violently. \u2062He got 41\u200c months in prison.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cprosecutors stated \u2062that\u2064 the televised footage\u201d\u2063 that undermines their case\u2063 wasn\u2019t accurate? Do journalists aways show \u2063such deference \u2062to\u2062 the word of federal \u200bprosecutors? Or\u200b regard plea agreements, which are often coerced\u200c or signed under duress, with such factual deference? Especially\u2062 when\u200b there\u2019s four minutes of video evidence\u200b blowing a hole in their presentation of facts?<\/p>\n<p>The Federalist made no \u2062claims that \u2064the footage exonerated Chansley. But given the hyperbolic media narrative that \u200bsurrounded the Jan. 6 riot and the clear prosecutorial \u2063double standards for violent left-wing protesters, the \u200dAmerican people deserved to see this footage, and The Federalist was right \u2063to present and amplify it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/05\/23\/eric-adams-vegan-totalitarianism-shows-where-global-warming-activism-is-headed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> claims \u200cthat New York Mayor \u200cEric Adams would place caps on the amount of meat and dairy served by city institutions. However, \u2063Adams did not propose banning meat or dairy in his April 17, 2023 announcement. Furthermore, a City Hall spokesperson said these \u200cclaims are \u201c100 percent false.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Federalist article in question did not say Adams was going \u2063to ban \u2062meat. It did say that, under Mayor Adams, an evangelistic vegetarian, the city would \u201cplace\u200b caps\u201d \u200bon the amount of \u2062meat and dairy. It linked to a New York Times article headlined \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/17\/nyregion\/eric-adams-meat-emissions-nyc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Why New \u200cYork\u2019s (Mostly) Vegan Mayor Wants to Cut the\u2062 City\u2019s Meat Budget<\/a>.\u201d It also linked to\u2064 the\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/263-23\/mayor-adams-commits-reducing-city-s-food-based-emissions-33-percent-2030-after-releasing#\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">city\u2019s own website<\/a> about \u2063the city\u2019s plans reduce\u2062 the city\u2019s \u201cfood \u2062emissions\u201d by 33\u200d percent. The carbon\u200b emissions linked to food \u200dsources are disproportionately related to meat production. Under Adams, city\u2064 schools have\u2064 instituted an optional \u201cplant-powered\u200d Friday\u201d menu.<\/p>\n<p>Adams took a \u200dlot of public criticism when \u200cthis plan to\u200c cut the meat budget was announced, so of\u200c course his spokesman was doing damage control. Regardless,\u200d when the mayor\u2019s spokesman said that the accusations against Adams were \u201c100 \u2063percent\u200d false\u201d he was <a href=\"https:\/\/factcheck.afp.com\/doc.afp.com.33DT38G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">specifically referring to the \u200cclaim\u2064 that Adams was \u2064going to ban meat<\/a>. That was not a claim\u2062 The Federalist article ever made, and even The New York Times agrees the city\u2019s plan is to\u200c limit the\u2062 amount of meat the \u200ccity serves.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>This \u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/19\/10-ways-the-pro-abortion-left-proves-it-isnt-pro-choice-or-pro-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">article<\/a> stated women \u200cwho have abortions are at a higher risk for \u200cbreast cancer. However, \u200dlarge\u2062 studies and established organizations have found no\u2064 direct link between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/finding-breast-cancer-early-detection-tools\/\" title=\"Finding Breast Cancer\u2013Early Detection Tools\">developing breast cancer<\/a> and having an abortion.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Who could argue with \u201clarge studies and established\u200d organizations\u201d?\u200c Well, for starters, pro-life \u2063activists have long complained, with good \u200creason, that many \u201cestablished organizations\u201d that report on and do research on these\u200c issues are themselves pro-abortion \u2064activists. The American \u2062College \u2064of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, for instance, has an entire\u2063 page\u2063 on their \u200bwebsite \u2063about \u200bhow \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/topics\/abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">abortion is essential health\u2064 care<\/a>\u201d and offers resources and training for abortion activism.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, the\u200d Breast Cancer Prevention Institute compiled a list of 74 studies done between 1957 and 2013 on the\u2063 link between breast cancer and \u2062abortion\u2064 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150613152139\/https:\/www.bcpinstitute.org\/PDF\/BCPI-FactSheet-Epidemiol-studies_11_2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">53 of those studies showed a positive correlation<\/a>. I\u2019m sure there are abortion activists that want to argue the \u2062individual methodology of each of those studies, but it\u2019s not unfair \u200dto\u200b assert a link \u200band I seriously doubt anyone at\u2062 NewsGuard \u200bknows what\u200b they\u2019re talking about here.\u200d  <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/streaklinks.com\/BltJNbvOziX_dwZezgySyk6N\/https%3A%2F%2Fthefederalist.com%2F2022%2F04%2F12%2Fcalifornia-bill-openly-admits-abortion-was-always-about-killing-babies%2F\">These<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/08\/five-pro-abortion-bills-california-wants-to-pass-in-light-of-draft-roe-opinion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">articles<\/a> claimed\u200d that a California bill would legalize, or\u200c decriminalize, infanticide. Several news reports have shown that the \u2062misrepresentation of \u2064the bill came from the measure\u2019s language\u2063 referring to \u201cperinatal death.\u201d However, the bill was amended to clear up that the bill\u2019s immunity provision is intended\u200d to apply to \u2063a perinatal death after a live birth when\u2063 the cause of death is directly\u2064 attributable to pregnancy.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Let\u2019s\u2064 get this straight. The California bill didn\u2019t allow post-birth infanticide except\u2063 the language had to be revised to \u2026 not allow post-birth infanticide? And\u200b in doing so, the need to amend the bill essentially validated the original concerns it would allow\u2062 infanticide?<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>We\u2019ve also seen that articles generally embrace \u2064a conservative agenda, which is not disclosed on the site. And articles not categorized\u200b as \u201cOpinion\u201d often feature opinionated language. For example, this article stated, \u200d\u201cEvery \u2064week, the president of the United States says \u200dsomething completely bonkers, \u2062and everyone \u2063goes on with their day. Why \u2063isn\u2019t it \u2064disclosed \u2064somewhere accessible on the site \u2064so that readers are aware?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Federalist is\u2064 a conservative,\u2064 right-leaning news and opinion website. The article quoted above \u200cis\u2062 headlined, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/06\/20\/joe-biden-is-not-ok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joe Biden Is \u200dNot \u200cOK<\/a>.\u201d If you\u200b stumble across this website \u200drandomly \u2062and you \u200bare \u2064persuaded \u2063of something, well, that\u2019s great.\u200d But there is no intentional deception involved.\u2062 Anyone staring at the home page with \u200ba few brain cells to rub together can \u200bdeduce this quickly, and this is a ridiculous\u2063 criticism. Does The\u2063 New York Times openly declare they are a leftist \u2064paper somewhere? Or are we still laboring \u200cunder the delusion they\u200b are objective?<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of the Times, I would also note \u2064that\u2063 in\u200c recent years, \u2064the \u2064vaunted\u200b \u201cpaper of \u2064record\u201d has defended itself in \u200dtwo separate libel lawsuits by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/articles\/2021\/03\/25\/nyts_libel_defense_no_need_for_opinionfact_labeling_145476.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asserting\u2063 that its\u2062 reporters\u200c can insert their \u2064opinions into news stories<\/a>, without labeling \u200cor distinguishing the opinion from\u200d fact \u2014 even though \u2063this is against the\u200b Times\u2019 own internal policies. Last I \u2063checked, \u200cThe New York Times had a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/18\/left-wing-rating-agency-grades-media-that-botched-hunter-biden-story-with-100-percent-credibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">perfect 100\u2063 percent rating from NewsGuard<\/a>.
