(Photo by \u2063APU \u200cGOMES\/AFP via\u200b Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/brooke-mallory\">Brooke Mallory<\/a><br \/>5:00\u2062 PM \u2013 Thursday, July 20, 2023  <\/h2>\n<p>A primarily liberal college town in Idaho \u200chas agreed to\u2064 pay $300,000 to three Christian churchgoers who sued the city after being\u200b imprisoned for failing to wear face masks or maintain social distance \u2062measures at an \u2063outdoor service during \u2063the peak \u200bof \u2062the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The city of \u200cMoscow, Idaho, announced this\u200b week that it would settle the lawsuit with Gabriel Rench and\u200b Sean and Rachel \u200cBohnet, who \u2063filed a\u200c case against city officials\u200c in March 2021. <\/p>\n<p>They asserted that their rights under \u200cthe First and Fourth \u2064Amendments were\u200d violated when they \u200cwere arrested at an outdoor \u201cpsalm sing\u201d \u200cled by church leaders \u200bin September 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow, \u200cIdaho, is \u200da community of around 25,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/christians-arrested-for-outdoor-church-service-during-covid-19-win-300000-lawsuit\/\" title=\"Christians awarded 0,000 in lawsuit for outdoor church service arrest during COVID-19.\">000 inhabitants located approximately 80 miles south<\/a> of Spokane, Washington. The church\u200b named in the lawsuit, Christ Church, is a small congregation of about 1,000 members that \u2063is part of the \u2062Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the incident, Officers took Rench\u2019s hymn book before \u2062hauling him away in handcuffs to the county jail, where \u200che and\u2063 others\u2064 were kept \u2064for \u2062several \u2064hours, according to video of the arrests, which went viral and was blasted\u200d at the \u2062time on the Twitter platform.<\/p>\n<p>The calm worship service lasted only\u2062 20 minutes in front of Moscow City Hall, where local authorities \u2063had \u200bput little yellow \u200ddots six \u2064feet apart to guide participants \u200bin \u200bCOVID-19 6-feet-apart \u2063social distancing.<\/p>\n<p>Rench \u2062and the other\u2064 two \u200bwere accused of \u2062breaching the city\u2019s periodically \u2063amended health law.\u2062 However, a\u00a0magistrate \u2064court later\u200d dropped the city\u2019s case against them.<\/p>\n<p>U.S.\u200d District \u2062Court Judge \u200cMorrison C. \u2064England, Jr., noted that the \u201cplaintiffs should never have been arrested in the first place,<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cSomehow, every single\u2062 city official involved\u2063 overlooked\u2063 the exclusionary language [of constitutionally protected behavior] in the Ordinance,\u201d the \u2062judge wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rench said that the \u2064situation \u200din Moscow \u200ccould be \u200cdescribed as a sort of \u201cmicrocosm\u201d \u2064of concerns occurring\u2063 throughout the country and\u200d overseas.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI think \u200bit\u2019s \u2063no secret that \u2062portions of our\u2062 government\u2063 and political groups are now starting to\u200c target Christians in a way \u2063that has never really happened \u2064in\u200c America\u200d or [even] Canada,\u201d he said, referencing the\u200c pastors who have been jailed in\u2062 neighboring Canada \u200drecently for holding church services.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in a conservative \u2064state, but\u200b I live in a liberal town, and \u2064the liberals had no problem\u2063 arresting me for practicing \u2062my \u2063religious \u2063rights and my Constitutional rights,\u201d Rench said. \u201cBut my [Republican] governor also didn\u2019t\u200b defend me either. If you look at what\u2019s going on in Canada, I think America\u2019s 10 years, at most 20 years, behind Canada if \u200bwe don\u2019t make significant \u2063changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One thing that\u200c Rench said \u2064he learned from the whole incident is \u200bthat \u201chardened\u201d political leaders \u200ccannot\u2063 be expected to modify their mental processes or political ideals.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWhat\u200c needs to happen is the people need to change how\u2064 they\u200d vote \u2064and disincentivize\u200b the targeting of Christians \u200dand those who are genuinely trying to\u2064 defend the Constitution,\u201d he maintained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cUnder the terms of the settlement agreement, ICRMP will pay a total settlement amount of\u2064 $300,000 and all\u2062 claims against the\u2062 City \u200cand \u200dthe named\u200d City employees will \u2062be \u2063dismissed with prejudice along with a\u200d release of \u200ball liability,\u201d the\u200b release said, including\u200d that the settlement will\u200d \u201cprovide(s) closure \u200dof a\u200c matter related to the unprecedented\u200b COVID-19 pandemic\u00a0and the City\u2019s\u200c efforts to protect the public during an exceptionally trying\u200b time.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stay\u200d informed!
