However, Flores declined\u200b to comment \u2064on whether or not this policy could be altered in the future.<\/p>\n<p>MTA Communication Director Tim Minton emphasized \u2062that the primary purpose of the system is to track patterns in fare evasion and keep track of the revenue that subway systems lose as a \u2063result of the evasion.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re using it essentially as a counting tool,\u201d Minton said. \u201cThe objective is to determine how many people are evading the fare and how \u2062are they doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Civil rights and privacy advocates have\u200c remained skeptical about how the\u200c new system can potentially be used\u200c by police, despite\u2062 the MTA\u2019s affirmations\u200c that the system will not be\u2062 used\u2063 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrat-portland-mayor-done-with-anarchist-mob-begs-public-to-help-unmask-rioters\/\" title=\"Democrat Portland Mayor \u2018Done\u2019 With \u2018Anarchist Mob,\u2019 Begs Public To Help \u2018Unmask\u2019 Rioters\">assist law enforcement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Albert Fox Cahn,\u200b the Director of the\u200b Surveillance Technology Oversight\u200c Project, expressed concerns over the implementation of the \u2063software, commenting, \u2064\u201cWe\u2019re already seeing the proliferation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/chicago-violence-70-shot-at-least-10-killed-as-highway-shootings-hit-all-time-high\/\" title=\"Chicago Violence: 70 Shot, At Least 10 Killed As Highway Shootings Hit \u2018All-Time High\u2019\">automated license plate readers<\/a>. We\u2019ve \u2062seen data collection on Uber and\u2064 Lyft histories. We see tens of \u200cthousands of cameras accessible to the NYPD when people are walking about in \u2063public,\u201d \u2064he continued. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cSo\u2062 it\u2019s increasingly becoming a city where there\u2019s no \u2062way\u2062 to navigate \u2063it privately.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cahn, in addition to other critics of \u200cthe technology, feels that the city\u2019s effort to\u2063 crack\u200c down on fare evasion is misplaced.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cWe keep seeing this \u200dconsistent criminalization\u200b of fare evasion even \u2063though it hurts no one,\u201d \u2064he said.\u200b \u201cAnd this really just feels like\u200d politics driving bad technology and bad policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stay informed!
