attorneys.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit claimed that some eligible protesters\u2063 were arrested,\u2064 while \u2062others had their\u2064 First Amendment rights infringed upon by the police.<\/p>\n<p>However, protesters who were arrested for\u200b violent charges or impeded police from arresting others may not be eligible \u2064for a payout.<\/p>\n<p>The settlement \u200bis still pending approval from a judge and is expected to be\u200c one of the most expensive payouts \u2063for \u2063mass \u200carrests.<\/p>\n<p>The plaintiffs&#8217; lawyers \u2063from the National Lawyers Guild, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/more-electioneering-dirty-facebook-suspends-gop-ad-campaign-days-before-january-georgia-runoff-election\/\" title=\"More Electioneering: Dirty Facebook Suspends GOP Ad Campaign Days Before January Georgia Runoff Election\">left-leaning group<\/a>, accused the \u200bNYPD of using excessive force and making unlawful arrests, violating the protesters&#8217; First \u2062Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p><b data-stringify-type=\"bold\"><\/b><\/p>\n<p>According to the lawsuit,\u2064 there were instances where police beat and kicked\u200b protesters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;N.Y.P.D.&#8217;s suppression of dissent \u200chas continued \u200bthrough numerous mayoral administrations,&#8221; stated one of the plaintiffs&#8217; lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c city, on\u200c the other hand, argued that the \u200dNYPD did not suppress lawful protests or\u2064 infringe\u2064 upon the protesters&#8217; constitutional right to demonstrate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no history \u2013 or present or future \u2013 of unconstitutional policing,&#8221; read a \u200dmemo from Georgia Pestana, an attorney for the city.<\/p>\n<p>Following Floyd&#8217;s \u2063death, approximately 10,000 people were arrested nationwide, and \u200cthe riots caused nearly $2 billion in property damage.<\/p>\n<p>In New York, over 2,000 people\u200d were arrested between May 28 \u2062and June 7, according to the New York State attorney general&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>During\u200c the protests in New York City,\u2062 some individuals engaged in violent acts, injuring dozens of police officers, damaging police cars, looting or damaging businesses.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, two NYPD officers in Brooklyn were shot and one was stabbed in \u200cthe neck while trying to prevent looting.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor \u2062implemented \u200ba curfew for the \u200cfirst week \u200bof June, but it was \u2064frequently violated by protesters.<\/p>\n<p>This settlement is not the first time New York City has reached \u200dan agreement with George Floyd protesters.
