(Photo by Angela Weiss \/ AFP via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>OAN\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oann.com\/tag\/roy-francis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Roy Francis<\/a><br \/>12:11 PM \u2062\u2013 Thursday, \u2062July \u206320, 2023<\/h2>\n<p>The city of New York has consented to pay over\u2063 $13 million in a settlement \u2063of a\u2064 civil\u200b rights lawsuit on \u200cbehalf \u2063of around 1,300 people who had police encounters in the summer of\u2064 2020.<\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1\" style=\"min-width: 320px; min-height: 50px;  text-align: center;\">  \t<script>  \t\tgoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1663871513696-art-1'); });  \t<\/script>  <\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-slot__ad-label\">Advertisement<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit focused on \u206218 of the protests that took place in New \u200dYork\u200c City after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The lawsuit states that, with a few exceptions, each \u2062person\u2063 who was\u200d arrested or subjected to force by police officers will be eligible for $9,950 in compensation. <\/p>\n<p>According to city officials,\u2063 the agreement to settle the\u200b lawsuit allows \u2064the city to avoid a trial that \u200dthey said would be\u200b both financially and politically \u2063burdensome.<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys\u200b with the National Lawyers Guild, that represented the plaintiffs in the lawsuit in New York, had accused the New York Police Department leaders of denying\u2062 protesters throughout the city of their First Amendment rights. They claimed \u200bthat the police department had denied protesters their rights through a \u2064\u201ccoordinated campaign of indiscriminate brutality and unlawful arrests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City attorneys defended the police force saying that city had \u2062come under chaos and that police officers were \u2063having to respond to and try to control an \u201cunprecedented\u201d situation\u2063 in which police vehicles were set on fire, and officers were assaulted with rocks and plastic bottles.<\/p>\n<p>Adama Sow, a plaintiff in the \u200dsuit, said that the group of people he was marching with in 2020 had been separated by police and that they were placed in zip ties and that they were\u2064 held in a\u2063 correctional bus \u2063for several hours in \u2064hot weather.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>\u201cIt was so disorganized, but so intentional,\u201d Sow said. \u201cThey seemed set on traumatizing everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>City officials invoked qualified immunity which protect the city\u2019s police officers from individual lawsuits which would result from work performed in the line of duty.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, unlike\u2062 previous\u2062 ones \u200dbrought against the department, does not seek \u200bchanges within\u2063 the NYPD or its practices. This lawsuit is one among many, which are ongoing, that\u2063 is aimed at injunctive relief.<\/p>\n<p>Another lawsuit that was settled earlier in \u20642023 will award $21,500 to individuals arrested by \u200bpolice during a\u2063 demonstration in the Bronx in 2020. The total payout of the suit will total approximately $10 million.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2063city of New York\u200d is also facing over \u2063600 other lawsuits which were brought by separate individuals in relations to the 2020 protests. According to Brad Lander, the city comptroller, about half of the lawsuits have been settled, \u2064forcing the city to\u200c pay out around $12 million so far.<\/p>\n<p>This latest settlement comes as other cities\u2064 across the country are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nyc-to-pay-13m-to-2020-protesters\/\" title=\"NYC to compensate 2020 protesters with M.\">negotiating similar lawsuits<\/a> with individuals who had taken part of the 2020 protests that saw over 10,000 \u2063people arrested within a few days.<\/p>\n<p>Stay informed!
