Sheldon\u2064 Whitehouse (D-RI) that would force a binding code of ethics upon the nine\u200d high court justices, as members\u2063 of his party fume over reports of undisclosed travel and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/revealed-hunter-biden-flew-to-moscow-to-meet-now-sanctioned-russian-oligarch\/\" title=\"Revealed: Hunter Biden Flew to Moscow to Meet Now-Sanctioned Russian Oligarch\u00a0\">real estate deals<\/a> by some \u2063current Republican-appointed justices.<\/p>\n<h3>Allegations Surrounding the Donation<\/h3>\n<p>Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) said \u200dthere is &#8220;one\u2064 allegation that&#8217;s come to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-mike-lee-sounds-off-on-ruth-bader-ginsburgs-mysterious-1-million-award\/\" title=\"VIDEO: Mike Lee Speaks Out About Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Enigmatic M Prize\">light fairly recently<\/a>&#8221; surrounding a $1 million donation Ginsburg received in December \u20622019 from the Berggruen Institute, a \u2063private foundation founded by billionaire\u2064 investor Nicolas Berggruen.<\/p>\n<p>Ginsburg, an appointee of former President Bill Clinton, was defended by committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL), who said the late justice &#8220;announced she \u2063was \u2063donating it to charity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite her stated intent, the charities were never disclosed and\u2064 the Berggruen\u200d Institute to \u2062this day has \u200bsaid the &#8220;list&#8221; of \u200brecipients of her donation &#8220;is not\u2064 for publication,&#8221; according to the\u200d Washington Free Beacon.<\/p>\n<p>Paul Kamenar, a lawyer with the National Legal and\u2063 Policy Center \u2063watchdog group, also told the outlet that the institute \u200cshould have disclosed the identity of the charities \u2062picked out by \u2064Ginsburg\u2063 on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/elizabeth-warren-abandons-mckinsey-disclosure-demands\/\" title=\"Elizabeth Warren Abandons McKinsey Disclosure Demands\">financial disclosure forms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Increasing Calls for a Code of Ethics<\/h3>\n<p>Calls for a\u200d binding code of ethics intensified as more news outlets published\u200b stories \u200cabout perceived ethical lapses by nearly \u2062every member of the \u200dhigh court, including a recent Associated Press investigation that revealed Justice \u200cSonia Sotomayor&#8217;s staffers prodded colleges to buy more \u2062of\u2062 her \u2063books, which have generated \u200bat least $3.7 million \u2062in sales since she joined the court\u200b in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans on Thursday sharply rebuked claims that the Supreme Court \u2062doesn&#8217;t have a code of ethics, as Lee referenced the Ethics in Government Act of \u200b1978,\u2064 which requires federal judges, including Supreme Court justices, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/status-of-ruth-bader-ginsburgs-1-million-donation-questioned-during-supreme-court-ethics-hearing\/\" title=\"Ruth Bader Ginsburg's  million donation under scrutiny in Supreme Court ethics hearing.\">complete financial disclosure reports annually<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They \u200cdo in fact, have ethical\u200d standards,&#8221; Lee said. &#8220;The standards not only match \u2062up to those that we follow, in some meaningful ways, they exceed\u2064 those \u200cthat \u2063are binding\u200c on members \u200cof \u200bthe United States Senate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While lower court \u200djudges are bound by the Code of Conduct\u200c for United States Judges, the Supreme Court \u200dis not,\u2063 though the\u2064 public information office of the high \u2062court has said \u200bpreviously that the justices\u200d consult the same ethics code for lower court judges when making recusal decisions.<\/p>\n<h3>Republican Opposition\u200c to Whitehouse&#8217;s Bill<\/h3>\n<p>Whitehouse&#8217;s legislation would impose a new set of ethics rules for the high court but also a process to enforce\u200b them. New \u2062standards around\u200d gifts, conflicts of interest, and\u2062 transparency \u200caround\u2062 recusals are the major pillars of the bill, \u2064which has little chance of passing the\u200d full Senate. The bill was pushed out of committee on \u200bThursday by \u200ca party-line vote.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans \u2062are largely united in the belief that it would\u2063 be best for the\u2063 justices themselves to work\u2064 out an updated ethics code.<\/p>\n<p>Ranking Republican committee member Sen.
