\u2062purchasing \u200cminerals \u200bfrom countries \u2062like the Democratic \u200cRepublic of\u200c Congo\u2062 and its\u200b neighboring regions \u200care\u200b not \u2064adequately verifying that\u200c the\u200b metals\u200c are \u2064not sourced \u2063from \u2064conflict zones. \u200dThe GAO analysis also\u200d revealed that several\u2063 companies sourcing\u2063 minerals such\u200c as tin,\u200d tungsten, tantalum, and gold\u2064 are failing\u2064 to \u2063meet disclosure requirements set by the U.S. Securities\u200d and Exchange\u2063 Commission (SEC).<\/p>\n<div\u200d conduct due \u2063diligence by \u2064utilizing\u2062 supplier\u2063 surveys,\u2062 smelter \u2063and refinery audits, \u200cand traceability methods. \u2063However, some\u2064 companies are facing challenges \u2064in conducting \u200bthorough\u200d due diligence, \u200cand there\u200b are\u200b even \u200dcases\u2063 where \u2062companies fail to \u2064file reports\u200d altogether,\u2062 according to \u2062the \u200bGAO.\u200b These difficulties\u2063 arise\u2064 from limited \u200baccess \u2064to suppliers \u2064and complex\u2063 supply\u200d chains.<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 GAO also highlighted that\u2062 some companies \u2062may\u2063 be providing \u200bincomplete \u2064information or not \u2063filing reports at all due to\u200c a perception that\u2062 the \u2064SEC\u2062 is unlikely to take \u200cenforcement action against\u200c non-compliance with conflict minerals disclosure requirements.<\/p>\n<p>\u2064 <\/p>\n<p>With increasing \u200cpressure \u2062on\u200b global manufacturers\u200b to demonstrate responsible sourcing\u200d of metals used\u200d in \u2062various \u200cproducts, \u2062such as\u2064 laptops, video \u200bgame consoles, and\u200b battery electric vehicles, the\u2063 U.S. law mandates listed \u2063companies\u200d to\u200c disclose \u200cwhether \u200ctheir \u2063products contain tantalum, \u2062tin, \u200dtungsten, or gold from Congo and its\u2064 neighboring countries, given\u2063 the role \u2063these minerals\u200b play \u2062in \u200cfueling \u200cconflicts \u2064in the region.<\/p>\n<p>According\u200d to\u2063 the GAO report, approximately\u2063 53% of\u2062 companies \u2062that conducted \u2063due\u2064 diligence last \u2062year\u2062 were unable\u2062 to determine \u200bif \u2062any \u2062conflict \u2063minerals\u200c
