(Toby Talbot\/AP)<br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<p> \u200b <\/p>\n<p>Physician-owned hospitals (POH) were\u2063 once \u200ccommon until Congress\u2063 restricted \u2063doctors&#8217; ability to \u200cown \u2064hospitals\u2063 in\u2064 2003.\u200b The \u200dintention was \u2062to lower\u2062 costs by\u200c increasing competition, but\u2063 a study \u2064by the Mercatus \u2062Center at \u2063George Mason University suggests\u2063 that\u2063 the opposite occurred. The study found \u200dthat\u200b POHs provided higher-quality care at a lower \u2063cost and with greater efficiency. These\u2063 regulations, combined with \u200bthe\u2063 prohibition on POHs, are \u2064driving up costs \u2063and making\u2064 it increasingly difficult for doctors to run \u2064their\u200b own\u200c practices.\u200d Many doctors \u2062are forced\u2063 to\u200d join \u2063corporate hospitals, reducing \u200dcompetition\u2064 and decreasing\u200b the quality of care.<\/p>\n<p> \u200d <\/p>\n<p>Subcommittee Chair Rep. Beth Van \u2064Duyne (R-Texas) expressed shock at \u2063the \u2064amount\u200d of time doctors\u2064 spend on compliance and administrative tasks.
