Kirstin Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and \u200cSen. Josh Hawley \u200b(R-Mo.)\u200b are taking a bold step \u200bto address concerns about government \u200cofficials owning stocks\u200d while in\u2062 office. They\u2062 have\u200d co-sponsored a \u200cbipartisan bill, named the\u200b Ban Stock\u200c Trading \u200cfor Government Officials Act, \u2063which aims to heavily \u200bregulate\u2062 investing by \u2063members of government.<\/p>\n<p>The act,\u2062 announced on \u2064Wednesday, prohibits\u2062 the \u2063buying and\u2063 selling of stocks, including\u200c those held\u200b in blind trusts. She added, \u200d&#8221;I&#8217;m going to work hard \u2062alongside Senator \u2064Hawley \u200cto get \u2063it signed into\u200d law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This bipartisan effort comes at \u200ca \u200dtime\u200c when \u200bconcerns are rising about government members having an unfair advantage \u2064in the\u200d stock market\u200c due to\u200c their\u200c access to non-public \u2064information and \u200cthe ability to\u2063 shape laws and \u2064policies.<\/p>\n<p>Several senators \u200cfaced scrutiny for their stock trading activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some were found to have sold stocks in\u200d industries heavily \u2062impacted by the pandemic, while others purchased stocks in biotechnology and \u2064work-from-home technology companies that saw \u2063a surge in \u2063demand.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Politicians \u2062and civil servants shouldn&#8217;t prioritize\u2062 personal profit\u200c over the American public,&#8221; \u200csaid Mr. Hawley. &#8220;Our bill is common sense: ban elected and executive \u200cbranch officials from trading or\u2063 holding stocks, and put \u200bthe American public \u2064first.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> \u2064\u200b <\/p>\n<h2>Proposed Penalties<\/h2>\n<p>The Ban Stock \u2064Trading for Government Officials Act includes various penalties \u2062for lawmakers\u200c and senior executive branch officials.<\/p>\n<ul>\n \u2063  \u200d <\/p>\n<li>Members of Congress who violate\u200b the ban on\u200b stock trading face a \u200cpenalty of\u2064 at least 10 percent of \u200dthe value of \u200dtheir prohibited investments.<\/li>\n<p>  \u2062 \u200d <\/p>\n<li>The bill \u2062also raises\u2064 penalties for failures to\u200b disclose other transactions covered under the \u2064STOCK Act, such as bonds and commodities futures.<\/li>\n<p>  \u200b<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Hawley (R-Mo.) propose a bill to prevent U.S. lawmakers, executive branch officials, and their families from owning stocks during their tenure.
