\u2064to hand \u2062the state\u2019s electoral votes to \u200ba different \u2064candidate than \u2063the\u2063 one actually\u2063 elected by\u2064 the \u200bpeople\u200c of \u200bMichigan.<\/p>\n<p> \u200d \u2062  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u200c evidence \u200bwill\u2062 demonstrate \u2062there\u200d was no\u200b legal authority for \u200bthe \u2064false electors \u200dto purport\u200c to \u200cact as &#8216;duly elected\u2063 presidential\u200d electors&#8217; he\u2062 said at\u200b the press \u2063conference.<\/p>\n<p> \u200b   \u200c<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The 16 individuals under \u2064attack\u200b are not\u200b fake \u2064electors,&#8221; he\u200d continued, \u2062adding \u2063that\u200d they were \u200dlegally elected\u200d under \u2063Michigan law \u200dat convention to represent\u200c the\u2064 Republican \u200cParty \u200cas \u2062electors.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d \u200b \u2062  \u200b<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064Michigan AG\u2019s \u2062office \u2062did\u2062 not immediately \u200brespond\u200c to a \u200brequest \u200cfor comment. However, \u2063Ms. Nessel\u2064 said\u200d during a press \u200dconference \u2062on \u200bTuesday that she is\u200b expected\u2062 to hear claims that \u200dthe \u2063prosecution \u200bis \u200bpolitically\u200c motivated.<\/p>\n<p>\u2062 \u2063 \u2063  <\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u200c Democrats, by\u2063 contrast,\u2064 praised \u2064Ms. Nessel\u2019s decision\u2063 to \u200bbring criminal\u200d charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u2062 \u200c   \u2063<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am so\u2063 grateful our \u2062attorney general stepped up and \u200dissued\u2063 charges\u200d against these \u200dfolks,&#8221; \u2062said LaVora Barnes, the \u2064current\u200c Chair \u2064of the Michigan\u200c Democratic Party,\u2063 <a\u200b href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/detroit\/news\/political-parties-react-after-michigan-attorney-general-charges-16-republicans-with-elector-fraud\/\">per \u2064CBS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These\u2064 Republicans \u200cattempted to \u2064undermine the \u200cvery foundation\u2064 of\u2063 our democracy\u200b pretending\u2063 they were\u2064 indeed\u2062 the duly \u200belected\u2064 electors knowing\u200b that \u200bthey \u2063weren\u2019t,&#8221; she\u200b continued. &#8220;It\u2019s shocking \u200bto\u200b me \u200bthat it happened \u200din the \u2062first place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> \u200d   \u2063<\/p>\n<h2>Dueling Electors<\/h2>\n<p> \u2063  \u200b <\/p>\n<p>Following \u2063Mr. \u2064Trump\u2019s\u2064 claims\u200b of fraud \u2062in the 2020\u200d presidential election, Republican\u2063 electors \u2062in \u200bseven states\u2014including Michigan\u2014cast alternative \u200bslates of votes for Mr.\u200d Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u2063  \u200b \u2064 <\/p>\n<p>Republicans\u200d in \u200dsome \u200cof\u200b the \u200dstates\u200c said that\u200b the rationale for \u2064casting alternative slates of elector \u200bvotes \u2062would\u200d preserve Mr. Trump\u2019s\u2064 legal \u2063claim for\u2063 the\u200b election as legal \u200cchallenges made \u2064their way through the\u2063 courts.<\/p>\n<p> \u200b   \u2063<\/p>\n<p>The idea \u200cof \u200ccompeting or \u2062dueling electors is \u2063not new\u200b in \u200bAmerican \u2062politics,\u2062 Mr. Forton pointed\u200d out \u200din the press \u2064conference Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200b\u200c  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s \u200chappened\u200c many\u2062 times \u200cin American history by\u200c both Democrats and Republicans in\u2063 contested elections,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d \u200c  \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>The precedent\u200b of \u2064dueling electors in \u200cU.S. \u2062presidential elections \u200bwas \u200dalso \u200cput forward as an \u2064argument\u200b by Meshawn \u2063Maddock,\u2063 former\u2063 co-chair \u2062of the\u200d Michigan\u200d Republican Party,\u200b and \u200done of\u200c the individuals\u2064 involved.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Michigan GOP strongly opposes the state Attorney General&#8217;s move to charge 16 individuals who certified that Trump won Michigan in the 2020 election.
