Version: 4.0.47--><h2>Few figures in conservatism are\u2063 more revered than Thomas \u2064Sowell<\/h2>\n<p><em>Sowell\u200d wrote a \u200dnationally \u2064syndicated \u2062column, authored dozens of books and dazzled television \u200daudiences\u200c time and\u200c time again with his \u200bcommon-sense, \u2064anti-intellectual \u2063approach to political and\u200b cultural\u2064 issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The following story is part \u2064of The Western Journal\u2019s \u200cexclusive \u2062series, \u201cThe \u200cSowell Digest.\u201d\u2064 Each issue will \u200cbreak\u200b down and summarize one\u200b of \u200bSowell\u2019s\u200b many\u2062 influential works.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For years, <a\u2062 href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/feminists-furious-gift-tiger-woods-handed-justin-thomas-outdriving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">radical\u200c feminists<\/a>\u200c have attempted to \u200dadvance\u2064 their ideology by repeating \u2062the unfounded \u200cclaim that \u2062women earn \u2062less for the \u2062same\u2063 job than \u200dtheir\u200d male counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>This\u2063 lie\u2062 has \u2062been parroted \u200bfor\u200b decades\u2064 by everyone \u2064from \u200bthe\u2062 late feminist Harriet\u200d Pilpel\u2062 to\u2063 President\u200d <a\u2062 href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/view-host-freaks-curveball-cause-bidens-presidential-reign-end\/\" target=\"_blank\"\u2062 rel=\"noopener\">Joe \u2062Biden<\/a> \u2014 and \u200djust about every \u200bpandering,\u200b far-left political \u2064figure in between.<\/p>\n<h3>The \u2062Left Keeps the Wage-Gap \u200bNarrative \u2063Alive to Court Voters<\/h3>\n<p>The Democratic\u2062 Party relies \u200con \u2064what it\u2062 categorizes as\u200c systems\u200b of\u200d oppression\u200c in \u200corder to court \u2062voters \u2064and\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/watch-sowell-brutally-debunk-a-feminist-to-her-face\/\" title=\"Watch Sowell expertly dismantle a feminist's arguments.\">wage\u200b civil rights battles<\/a> against enemies that \u2062often do not \u2064exist. \u2063In 2014, then-President\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/obama-heaps-praise-librarians-push-porn-kids-criticism-parental-book-bans\/\"\u200b target=\"_blank\" \u200brel=\"noopener\">Barack Obama<\/a>\u200c shamelessly\u2062 and baselessly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2014\/jan\/29\/barack-obama\/barack-obama-state-union-says-women-make-77-cents-\/#:~:text=During%20his%20State%20of%20the,in%202014%2C%20it%27s%20an%20embarrassment.\" target=\"_blank\" \u2062rel=\"noopener\">repeated<\/a> \u2063the falsehood \u2064that \u2064women earned\u2064 77 cents \u2063for \u200bevery dollar \u2063of\u200b their\u200d male counterparts during his State of the Union \u200daddress.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, <a \u200bhref=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/05\/19\/women-are-still-paid-83-cents-for-every-dollar-men-earn-heres-why.html\" target=\"_blank\" \u2064rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a> reported the \u2063same flawed \u200cconclusions. Citing\u2062 broad U.S. Census \u2064data, the \u200boutlet reported \u2063women in today\u2019s <a\u2064 href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/mike-rowe-issues-warning-hideous-workforce-trend-unprecedented-us-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workforce<\/a> earn\u200d 83 cents on \u2062the \u200cdollar compared \u2064to men.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Rhetoric \u2062regarding the claimed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-dem-state-lawmakers-rail-senate-chamber-dress-code-form-white-oppression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oppression<\/a> of women is again\u2062 heating up\u200b as the \u200bcountry gets \u2063ready for yet another \u200dpresidential election. In March,\u2062 the Biden\u200c administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/gpc\/briefing-room\/2023\/03\/14\/the-biden-harris-administration-advances-equal-pay-and-promotes-gender-equity-through-president-bidens-invest-in-america-agenda\/#:~:text=The%20Biden%2D%E2%81%A0Harris%20Administration,Biden%27s%20Invest%20in%20America%20Agenda&#038;text=Today%20is%20Equal%20Pay%20Day,for%20equal%20pay%20for%20all.\" target=\"_blank\" \u2063rel=\"noopener\">celebrated<\/a>\u2064 \u201cEqual\u200b Pay Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a\u2063 href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/california-democrats-block-bill-crack-child-traffickers-get-heckled-victims-sob\/\"\u2063 target=\"_blank\" \u200drel=\"noopener\">Democrats<\/a> \u200dand the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/by-hiring-cbs-reporter-kate-smith-planned-parenthood-brings-propaganda-production-in-house\/\" title=\"By Hiring CBS Reporter Kate Smith, Planned Parenthood Brings Propaganda Production In-House\">biased corporate media<\/a> \u2064have drawn a narrative that \u200dthe \u2064gender\u2064 wage\u2064 gap\u2062 has \u200cnarrowed, but that there \u200cis\u2062 much work \u2064to \u200cbe done\u200d to remedy what both\u200d portray\u2062 as \u200crampant inequality.<\/p>\n<p>The point \u200cis \u200cto keep a narrative alive\u2063 that \u200cwomen\u200b are \u200dan oppressed \u200dclass. Seventy-seven\u2062 cents\u200d on the dollar for women is\u2064 now 84 cents, which\u2062 advances both \u200cthe false \u2062equal\u2063 pay argument as \u200dwell as the notion progress\u200b has been made.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Thomas\u200b Sowell Settled This Debate\u2064 Decades\u2062 Ago<\/h3>\n<p>Those \u2064who\u2062 have \u2063not followed the \u200cgreat \u2063mind\u200b of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/biden-blames-gas-stations-rising-prices-thomas-sowell-eviscerated-argument\/\" target=\"_blank\" \u2063rel=\"noopener\">Thomas\u2063 Sowell<\/a> \u2064throughout \u200dthe years might \u2064not\u2062 know that the \u2064fallacy of the left\u2019s gender pay \u2062gap claims was \u2062thoroughly \u2063debunked by the economist\u2062 more than 40 \u2063years\u2063 ago\u2064 on live television.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, the footage\u2064 survives and is available on\u200c YouTube for the \u200bviewing\u2064 pleasure of anyone who \u200dwants an honest\u200d accounting\u200b of \u200cwage data as\u200b it\u2064 relates to\u2063 the sexes.<\/p>\n<p>Pilpel\u2063 was\u200b a\u2063 feminist\u2019s feminist. In \u200dthe 1970s and \u200d\u201980s, \u200dshe \u2063was\u2064 <a \u200dhref=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harriet_Pilpel\" \u2064target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general \u2062counsel<\/a> for\u2064 the\u200b American\u2063 Civil Liberties Union, but she \u2064also did\u2063 legal\u200c work for Planned Parenthood, including\u2062 writing the organization\u2019s \u200damicus brief\u2064 for the original 1972 Roe v. Wade court\u2063 case. She\u200c also served \u2064on \u2062the boards of the Guttmacher Institute\u200c and\u2062 National \u2064Abortion Rights Action League.<\/p>\n<p>During a\u2063 debate in \u20621981\u200d between \u200bSowell \u2062and \u200bPilpel on\u2063 a show \u200bcalled \u201cFiring Line,\u201d\u2062 Sowell laid out a simple fact: \u2062When \u200bhe looked\u200c at \u200cthe overall earnings\u200d of all women compared \u200bto \u2062all\u2063 men,\u200d he \u2062saw\u2062 that\u2064 women,\u2064 on average, \u2062indeed \u200bearn\u2062 less \u2064than men.<\/p>\n<p>But the \u2064average, as he \u200bexplained, is\u2063 a \u200ddeceptive number.<\/p>\n<p>As \u200dSowell noted more \u2064than 40 years\u200b ago,\u200c if we \u2063focus \u2064on\u200c specific cases where a \u2064woman and a man\u200c both have\u200d the same education, \u2063the \u2062same work experience and are in similar job positions\u2063 within \u2064similar companies, <a\u2063 href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/trump-becomes-first-sign-presidential-promise-american-women-says\/\" \u2063target=\"_blank\" \u200drel=\"noopener\">women<\/a> actually tend to\u200d earn more\u200d than their \u2064male \u2063counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Sowell entered a hostile conversation with\u200c Pilpel that\u2063 was\u200b moderated by \u200chost William F. Buckley, destroying her talking\u200d points over \u200dthe course of just \u200ca few\u200d minutes.<\/p>\n<p>During a\u200d discussion \u2062in\u2063 which\u2062 the feminist\u2064 activist \u200dclaimed\u200d black Americans were\u2063 being\u200d harmed\u2063 by their\u200d own\u2062 pay \u200ddisparity, Sowell \u200dnoted that through his own\u2062 research, he had found \u200dthat a black family \u200bwith \u200ctwo working, college-educated parents\u200c earned on \u200baverage $2,000 more\u200b annually than\u200c a \u2062white family with the same dynamics.<\/p>\n<p>Sowell\u200b argued \u2063that nationwide averages which showed \u2062a wage gap among the races could\u2064 be remedied\u200c if black\u200c families attended\u2062 <a \u200bhref=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/michelle-obamas-heart-breaks-now-asians-getting-fair-shot-college-admissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">college<\/a> at the\u200c same\u200b rates as\u2062 white families.<\/p>\n<p>Pilpel acknowledged \u2062the soundness of Sowell\u2019s argument, \u200dbut\u2064 fought \u200dhim\u200c on\u2062 the supposed disparity \u200das\u200d it\u200d related to women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou \u200bwould also\u200d have\u200d to agree \u2063that, generally speaking,\u200d women are paid less, for example\u200b for \u200dthe same \u200cjobs\u200d as \u2062well,\u201d Pilpel\u2062 said \u200bin response.<\/p>\n<p>Sowell\u2062 ended her \u2063argument there.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI \u200dwould \u200cnot\u2063 agree with\u2062 that. If \u200byou\u2019re\u200c talking about women\u2063 with \u200cthe same number of years\u2064 of \u2064experience,\u2062 with the same \u2062continuous\u200d service\u200b \u2013 et cetera, \u200cet\u2064 cetera,\u201d \u2062Sowell said.\u200b \u201cWhen\u200d I \u200dlook\u2062 at\u200d that, \u2063I\u200b don\u2019t \u200bfind \u200bthat\u200c disparity. I find, \u200bfor example \u2062in\u200b many\u2063 cases, \u200dthat women are making\u200c more \u2013 \u200ddepending\u2062 on \u2064how you\u2063 break the \u200ddata down, \u2062the [difference] with women\u2064 is\u200b between married\u200c women and everybody \u2064else. That\u2019s the\u200d real\u2064 difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pilpel\u2062 retorted with 1978 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/ap-detailed-race-question-census-may-end-ancestry-ask\/\" \u200dtarget=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Census<\/a> data\u2063 that showed men \u200dwere earning $11,100 \u2063annually compared\u2063 to \u2063\u201csingle\u201d women, \u200cwho she \u2064said earned, on\u200b average, \u200c$9,300 per year.<\/p>\n<p>Sowell responded by \u2064noting \u2063that relying on \u200baverages to calculate claims of discrimination ignored \u200bcrucial information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the word \u2018single\u2019 that is used \u2062[for\u2064 women],\u201d Sowell responded. \u201cWhen I \u2063did my study, I\u2064 didn\u2019t use \u2018single.\u2019 I used \u2062\u2018never\u2062 married.\u2019 You\u200c see, a \u200bwoman \u200bwho \u200dwas single at \u2062age\u2064 40, having spent \u206210\u200b or 20 years raising children, \u200bis really\u200b not\u2064 quite\u200b the same as \u2064a man of age\u2064 40 \u2062who has been \u200dworking continuously \u2062for 20 \u200byears.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2064 added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found\u200c the women who are\u200c never \u200bmarried\u200c \u2026 they \u2063were \u200bearning more\u200b than \u200dthe\u2063 men. And similarly,\u2063 when the\u200d government did data some years ago\u200c on women who had\u200b been\u2064 working continuously\u2062 since high school into their\u200b thirties, \u200cthere you found \u2064they\u200b were making slightly more\u200c than men of \u2063the\u200b same\u200d description. So, the \u2063difference is between married\u2063 women\u200d and \u200deverybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sowell \u200dadded\u200b that \u2064many men\u200c in the workforce \u2063at the time also had the \u200cadvantage \u2063of \u200ca wife\u200d who handled\u2064 business at\u2062 home \u2014 allowing them \u2064to\u2063 work\u200c more \u200chours and bring more\u2063 <a\u200c href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/dont-work-elon-tucker-discloses-much-money-made-since-taking-show-twitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">money<\/a> \u2063into\u2064 their homes.<\/p>\n<p>Pilpel \u200cwas \u200cdispleased \u2063by Sowell\u2019s conclusion \u200band\u200b made a last-ditch \u2062effort\u2062 to salvage \u2063her \u200dargument.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure you\u2019re aware \u2062of\u200b the \u2062fact that\u200b there are\u200b approximately 15 \u200bpercent of\u200b all homes in which there \u200cwas\u200c only one wage\u2063 earner, \u2064so that when \u200cyou talk\u2063 about women being\u200b able to\u200b take care of \u200cthings \u200cfor\u2063 their married \u2063mate\u200b wage earner, \u2063the fact\u2062 is\u2062 that in the overwhelming majority \u2064of\u200b American homes, the\u2064 women\u2064 also \u2062work,\u201d \u2064she said.<\/p>\n<p>Pilpel\u200d concluded, \u2062\u201cTherefore,\u200d I don\u2019t think \u200cyour \u200bexplanation that\u200d women \u200dhave \u2064other \u200dresponsibilities and\u200d that\u200c that\u2019s\u200b why \u2013.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pilpel\u200c was \u2063cut \u200coff\u200c by\u2062 Sowell, who \u200dconcluded\u200b his dissection of \u200dher\u2062 feminist talking\u2063 points\u2062 on <a\u2062 href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/jeffries-lies-bidens-record-inflation-growth-wages-deficits\/\"\u2064 target=\"_blank\" \u200drel=\"noopener\">wages<\/a>\u2062 with \u200danother fact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Work\u2019 \u2062can mean part-time\u2063 work or \u2063full-time \u2062work,\u201d he said. \u201cWomen \u200bdo\u200c not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kim-kardashian-reacts-to-fan-saying-skims-shapewear-saved-her-life-after-being-shot-4-times\/\" title=\"Kim Kardashian responds to fan who claims SKIMS Shapewear saved her life despite being shot four times.\">work \u200bfull-time<\/a> to \u2063the \u2062same extent \u200bthat men do. Part-time workers \u2063make less\u2062 than full-time \u2063workers,\u201d\u200b he concluded.<\/p>\n<p>What \u2064is \u2064perhaps \u200bthe most fascinating\u200d aspect \u200dof the segment is that\u2063 it\u2063 has aged remarkably well.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The \u2062Facts About Modern Wages \u2062and the Continuing Fight\u2062 for\u2062 \u201cEqual \u2062Pay\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a \u2064href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/feminists-take-notice-afghan-women-face-taliban-fighting-basic-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\" \u2063rel=\"noopener\">Feminists<\/a> and Democrats \u2064are \u2062still \u2063making the \u2064same arguments about \u200binequality\u2062 in their earnings.\u2064 They\u2019re\u200c still cooking the\u200d books\u200d in order to\u2063 advance\u2064 the false narrative that women \u200dare members of an \u200doppressed class.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u200c 2021 report from the \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/the-male-college-crisis-is-not-just-in-enrollment-but-completion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brookings Institution<\/a>,\u200c women were much more\u200b likely than men to\u200c graduate both college \u200band high school.<\/p>\n<p>That \u200dcertainly \u2064makes them \u200bless likely to \u2064be\u2062 passed over for high-paying \u2063jobs than men, who\u2063 are \u2064less likely to complete both \u2062<a\u200d href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/scotus-expected-follow-race-based-admissions-decision-new-case-huge-issue-high-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\"\u2064 rel=\"noopener\">high school<\/a>\u2063 and college.<\/p>\n<p>The\u200c think \u2063tank reported, \u201cOver 1.1 million women received \u200ca bachelor\u2019s \u2063degree in the \u20632018-19 academic \u200dyear compared to fewer\u200d than \u200c860,000\u200b men; put differently, about\u200d 74 men received a\u200b bachelor\u2019s degree \u2063for every \u200d100\u2062 women. Even fewer \u200dmen graduate with an associate\u2062 or\u200c master\u2019s\u200b degree, relative to \u200bwomen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A year \u2062later,\u200c the\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2022\/03\/28\/young-women-are-out-earning-young-men-in-several-u-s-cities\/\"\u200d target=\"_blank\" \u200drel=\"noopener\">Pew Research \u200cCenter<\/a> cited Census data \u200dthat showed women\u200b were \u2063earning \u200dmore than \u200dmen \u2063in some of the\u200b county\u2019s\u2062 hottest job markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn fact, in\u200b 22 \u200bof 250 U.S. metropolitan \u200dareas, \u2063women\u200d under\u2064 the age of 30 earn\u2064 the same \u200bamount as or more\u2063 than their\u2062 male counterparts,\u201d\u200c Pew\u2062 found.<\/p>\n<p>More\u2063 than four decades\u200c since Sowell \u200ddebunked\u200c Pilpel\u2019s claims that\u2063 women were oppressed, \u200cmodern \u200cfeminists are \u2063still advancing \u2063her claims.<\/p>\n<p>In \u200dthe \u200bmeantime, women have made strides in \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/op-ed-texas-house-sabotages-pushback-woke-higher-education\/\"\u2063 target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">education<\/a>\u2062 and\u200c are\u2064 now \u200das likely \u200das men \u2062to work\u200b full-time jobs \u2014 and earn \u200bmore money than them.<\/p>\n<p>Wages\u2063 for women are dragged down \u2064on \u2064average nationwide by \u200csingle \u200dor married women\u200c who \u200dwork \u200bpart-time or not at \u2064all. \u200cMeanwhile, men \u200cof\u200b every\u2064 category are\u200b more likely to \u2062seek\u200c full-time jobs \u200dthat are often\u2062 more hazardous \u200dand\u200d are accompanied \u2062by long hours.<\/p>\n<p>When comparing the averages\u2063 for the sexes, \u200cit is easy,\u200b if \u200cnot convenient, to argue that\u200b even in the modern\u2064 workforce, \u200bwomen are \u2063earning less than\u200d men.<\/p>\n<p>But what \u200cSowell \u2063explained\u2064 in 1981\u200c rings as \u200ctrue then as\u200d it does today.
