\u200bThe\u2064 Epoch Times\u200d on\u200b July \u200b19 that \u200dhis \u200dparty plans to probe\u2062 the \u201cweaponization\u201d of the government in response to news that \u2064Michigan electors in the 2020\u2064 presidential election \u200dfor\u2063 former President Donald Trump were being\u2063 charged with felonies.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Michigan Attorney\u2064 General \u2062Dana Nessel announced \u200din\u2064 a July\u200b 18\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/ag\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/07\/18\/michigan-attorney-general-dana-nessel-charges-16-false-electors\">statement<\/a> that she\u2063 was charging 16\u200c Michigan residents \u200bfor what she identified as\u2062 their role in \u200dthe \u201calleged\u2064 false electors \u2064scheme following\u200b the 2020 \u2062U.S. presidential\u200b election.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u200b \u200d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u200cMcCarthy responded \u2063to questions about the \u2062allegedly \u201cfalse electors,\u201d \u200dsaying, \u201cWe\u2019re going \u200cto look \u2062into that \u2063this is just \u200dthe\u2063 weaponization\u200b of government that \u200bhas happened \u200dunder\u200b Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2062  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis two<a \u200b<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064lawmaker\u200b answered \u200dquestions on\u2063 the issue\u200c just a day after 16 individuals were <a\u2062 href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/michigan-ag-brings-felony-charges-against-16-false-electors-in-2020-presidential-election_5407056.html?utm_source=open&#038;utm_medium=search\">charged<\/a>\u2062 after signing\u2063 documents \u2064following the \u200d2020\u2063 presidential \u200delection \u200cdeclaring that \u200dMichigan had been won by\u2063 Mr. \u2063Trump in\u2064 the 2020 \u2062election.<\/p>\n<p>\u2062 \u200b <\/p>\n<p>Each of the 16 individuals who \u200dserved as\u2062 electors in\u200d the\u2062 2020\u2064 election \u2062are facing \u2064several\u200d felonies \u2062that \u200ctogether carry a\u200d potential\u2064 maximum\u2064 sentence of 85 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2062false electors\u2019\u200b actions\u2063 undermined \u200dthe public\u2019s faith in\u2062 the integrity\u2062 of \u200bour elections and,\u2062 we believe, \u2064also plainly violated the laws by which we\u2062 administer our elections in Michigan,\u201d Ms. Nessel \u200dsaid in the statement.<\/p>\n<p> \u200d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy \u2064department \u2064has\u2064 <a general\u2019s arrests followed\u2064 an investigation that \u2064found evidence\u200d the 16 \u2062charged individuals met\u200d at the state GOP \u2063headquarters\u2063 in Michigan \u2063and\u2063 signed their names \u200cto false \u200bcertificates stating \u2062they were \u200celectors for Mr. Trump.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe evidence \u200bwill demonstrate\u200b there \u200bwas no \u200blegal \u2062authority \u200bfor the \u2064false electors\u200c to \u200cpurport \u200bto act as \u2018duly elected presidential electors\u2019\u2063 and execute the\u2062 false electoral documents,\u201d\u200d Ms. Nessel\u200c continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u2062  <\/p>\n<h2>Alternate\u200c Electors<\/h2>\n<p> \u200d \u200c<\/p>\n<p>In response to Mr. Trump\u2019s allegations \u200bof election \u200dfraud in \u2064the 2020 presidential election, Republican \u200delectors in seven\u2062 states, including\u200d Michigan, cast\u200b alternative \u200dballots \u2064supporting\u2063 Mr.\u200b Trump\u2019s \u200bclaim that\u200b he\u200c won the\u200d election.<\/p>\n<p> \u2064 <\/p>\n<p>Even \u2062though it isn\u2019t unheard of for \u200bdifferent groups of electors\u200d to\u2063 vote in a presidential election, the fact\u200c that so many\u2064 states did so in 2020 made the election \u2063unique. As legal \u200dchallenges went \u2064through the \u2064courts, Republicans \u2062in \u2062some \u200cstates asserted \u200bthat their\u200c actions\u200d would \u2064keep Mr. Trump\u2019s\u200d formal claim \u2063to the presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence\u200b in Ms.\u2063 Nessel\u2019s case\u200c included documents that were subsequently sent to the \u200dU.S. Senate and\u200b the<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>that she had filed charges against two individuals who allegedly made false statements on their election documents.
