Gavin \u200dNewsom, according to \u2063Ed Source, an \u2062education-focused \u2064outlet.<\/p>\n<p>In May, \u200cthe Temecula Valley \u200cUnified School Board \u2063voted 3-2 against\u2062 the &#8220;Social Studies\u200c Alive&#8221; \u2062curriculum \u200cfor first through fifth\u2064 graders\u200d because \u2064it taught about Milk. The \u200dboard&#8217;s decision was made despite Newsom&#8217;s warning \u200cthat the school \u2063district could \u200dface consequences\u2063 if the materials were not\u200b adopted, according to Ed Source.<\/p>\n<p>One\u200c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/44-san-francisco-schools-to-see-name-changes\/\" title=\"44 San Francisco schools to see name changes\">school board member<\/a>, \u200dJennifer Wiersma,\u2064 expressed\u200b her concerns\u2064 about \u2062the curriculum, stating, &#8220;When\u200c I look \u2063at the \u2062TCI curriculum\u200c I \u200cdon&#8217;t\u2064 see\u2063 American\u2063 exceptionalism. I don&#8217;t see \u2063all \u2062the things \u2062we\u200d need \u200bto see. \u2062We are going to hit \u200cthe \u200dstandards,\u200b but \u2063if we are totally going\u2063 to \u200cutilize\u200d TCI, \u200bwe \u200cneed to talk\u200b about\u200b bias. I don&#8217;t see a \u2063fair \u2064and \u200bbalanced\u2064 viewpoint. I\u2063 don&#8217;t see\u200c the civics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Newsom&#8217;s\u2063 administration began\u200c investigating the school\u2064 board in\u200b June, requesting documents \u2062and communications \u200bregarding \u2064its\u200b decision to \u2063reject the\u2063 curriculum. \u2064Prior to rejecting the course in May, \u2063the \u2063school board\u2064 had controversially referred to Milk as a &#8220;pedophile&#8221; \u200dand\u2064 expressed the \u200bbelief that \u200dthe\u200c district \u2062could &#8220;do better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Harvey Milk, who\u200b served \u2062as a San \u2062Francisco supervisor,\u2062 was\u200d the\u200c state&#8217;s first\u2064 openly gay \u2063elected official.
