dozen industry and consumer groups\u200b has\u200d issued a scathing\u200d criticism \u200cof the Biden administration\u2019s\u200b proposed regulatory crackdown\u200d on\u200d dishwashers as\u2062 part \u2062of a \u200csweeping \u200bfight\u200c against the perceived\u200c dangers of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>After\u200c first\u200b aiming \u2063at gas\u2062 stoves\u200b to \u200ccut \u200cgreenhouse gases, the Biden \u2062administration has\u2063 turned its attention to\u2062 other home appliances, with\u200b dishwashers finding \u2064their \u200bway into \u200dthe\u2062 crosshairs.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On May 5,\u200b the Department of \u2063Energy (DOE)\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/biden-admin-takes-aim-at-dishwashers-to-tackle-climate-crisis-after-gas-stove-clampdown_5249224.html\" target=\"_blank\"\u2064 rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">proposed<\/span><\/a><span\u2063 data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0congressionally mandated standards for\u2062 new dishwashers,\u2062 claiming the move would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-threatens-to-tax-and-regulate-oil-companies-more-if-they-dont-lower-prices\/\" title=\"Biden Threatens to Tax and Regulate Oil Companies More If They Don't Lower Prices\">reduce consumer costs<\/a> while cutting the amount of\u200b carbon \u200cemitted \u2062into the atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The proposed \u2062rulemaking (<a\u200d href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-05\/dishwasher-ecs-nopr.pdf?_gl=1*pbinci*_ga*MTQxOTc3MTA4Ny4xNjc4Nzg0MjQ1*_ga_VEJ5DJ7LND*MTY4MzU1OTkxMC4xLjAuMTY4MzU1OTkxMC4wLjAuMA..\">pdf<\/a>), published \u200din the Federal \u2062Register, seeks \u2063to\u2063 impose separate new \u200defficiency standards for\u2062 power and water \u2063usage \u2062for standard-size and compact dishwashers during \u2062their regular cycles.<\/p>\n<p>As part \u2063of\u200b the \u200bpublic comment\u2063 process on the proposal, the coalition of 19\u200d industry and consumer groups led by\u200b the\u2062 Competitive \u200cEnterprise\u2063 Institute (CEI) on \u200cTuesday \u200bsubmitted \u200ca\u200c <a\u2064 href=\"https:\/\/cei.org\/regulatory_comments\/comment-on-energy-conservation-standards-for-dishwashers\/\">detailed\u200b criticism<\/a> of the proposal.<\/p>\n<p>The groups urged the Biden\u200d administration to withdraw the rule, arguing that existing dishwasher standards \u2063are already \u200ccausing \u201cserious problems\u201d for consumers \u200band that tightening \u200bthem\u2062 further \u200dwould worsen the \u200cproblems\u200b and undercut consumer\u200b protections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile each of the Biden administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/opposition-grows-to-biden-admins-climate-crackdown-on-dishwashers\/\" title=\"Growing opposition to Biden Admin's crackdown on dishwashers' climate impact.\">recently-proposed appliance\u200c measures raises<\/a>\u200d a unique\u200d set of \u2063risks \u2062for\u200d consumers, \u2064the\u200b proposed dishwasher\u200d rule at \u200cissue here\u200b is\u200b particularly harmful,\u201d the groups \u2063wrote in the\u200d submission.<\/p>\n<p>The current\u200c energy and water\u2063 efficiency standards for \u200ddishwashers have already caused significant dissatisfaction among consumers\u200d due \u200bto \u2064far longer cycle \u200dtimes, the groups \u2064said.<\/p>\n<p>Tightening these measures \u200dfurther by way of the\u200b proposed \u200crule would \u2062likely worsen the situation but\u2063 offer minimal additional\u200b savings, \u200cthey\u200c argued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u200c believe the\u200d proposed \u2064rule\u200d should be withdrawn\u2062 and that the Department \u2062of\u2063 Energy (DOE) should shift \u2064its\u200b focus to addressing the\u2063 drawbacks caused\u200b by its existing dishwasher regulations,\u201d the \u200bcoalition wrote.<\/p>\n<p>DOE\u200c did not \u2064immediately\u2063 respond\u2064 to a \u200brequest for \u2063comment on the coalition\u2019s criticism \u200cof the proposed rule and its \u2063request for\u200c withdrawal.<\/p>\n<h2>More\u2063 Details<\/h2>\n<p>The DOE\u200b proposal\u2063 seeks to \u2064cut \u2064energy\u200c use by \u200c27 percent and water use \u2063by\u200c 34 \u2064percent\u2062 in\u200b new conventional household dishwashers\u2063 made\u2063 in\u200d the \u200dUnited\u200b States or\u200d imported\u2064 into \u200bthe\u2062 country, starting\u200c three years after the publication\u200b of the final rule.<\/p>\n<p>This\u200d means \u2063that\u200c the\u200d maximum\u2064 estimated annual\u2062 energy use \u2063for standard-sized dishwashers would be 223 kWh\/year, and \u2064the maximum per-cycle \u2062water\u200d consumption \u200dwould \u200bbe 3.3 gallons.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5249883\" \u2063under\u200b the \u200cproposed\u2062 rulemaking, \u2064see \u200da 22 percent reduction\u200b in power use and an\u200d 11 percent lower \u200dwater \u200dusage. \u200cSpecifically, this \u2063would mean that compact dishwasher\u200b models made in or imported into the United States \u2063would\u2062 have \u2062a maximum annual energy use of 174\u200b kWh\/year and \u2064maximum water consumption of \u200b3.1 gallons.<\/p>\n<p>If\u200b the\u2062 new rules\u2063 are \u2064adopted within the \u200cDOE\u2019s suggested timeframe, they \u200dwould come\u2063 into effect in 2027. The agency estimated \u200bthat the new rules would\u2064 save \u2064consumers nearly \u2064$3 billion in\u2064 utility bills over \u206230 \u2064years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Administration\u2063 is using all \u2064of \u2063the tools at \u200dour disposal to\u2064 save \u200bAmericans money \u2064while\u2064 promoting innovations that \u2063will \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/house-dems-vote-to-categorize-art-as-infrastructure\/\" title=\"House Dems Vote to Categorize Art as Infrastructure\">reduce carbon pollution<\/a>\u2063 and combat the climate \u2062crisis,\u201d\u2063 Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm\u200b said \u200cin\u200c a statement at the time\u200b that the \u2063proposal was announced in May.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200cCEI-led \u200bcoalition, however, insisted that \u200dthe proposed \u2062rule \u200dwould not work as promised\u200b and would \u2064lead\u200b to\u2062 both longer cycle times \u200band \u200dreduced \u2062dishwasher performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLonger cycle \u200ctimes \u200bare not the \u200bonly \u200bproblem,\u201d \u2063the coalition wrote \u200din its \u2064comments\u200c to\u2062 DOE, pointing to reduced performance in terms of \u2064reliability, cleaning, and drying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough not\u200d well\u200c documented,\u2064 the \u200dprevious \u200defficiency\u2062 standards have led\u2063 to other performance drawbacks. For\u2062 example, those who\u200d repair dishwashers have seen\u2064 changes in reliability\u201d resulting \u2062from DOE\u2019s earlier\u200b actions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth\u2064 the frequency \u200bof repairs \u200cas \u200cwell\u2062 as their cost\u2062 have \u200brisen,\u201d the \u200bgroups continued.<\/p>\n<p>Cleaning performance has also \u200bseen adverse\u200c impacts, the\u200d coalition stated,\u200c noting \u200b\u201cmore\u2062 instances\u200c of \u2062consumers\u200c running \u200dloads twice to\u200b get \u2063them sufficiently clean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many models that comply \u200bwith \u200bthe DOE\u2019s \u200bearlier standard\u200c don\u2019t\u200d dry \u2062dishes fully, they continued, adding that \u200cthe\u200c advantages of\u200c using \u200ddishwashers over washing by \u2064hand would\u2063 be further \u2064undermined by\u200b the agency\u2019s \u2063new\u2064 draft rule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDishwasher performance\u2062 would \u200conly be \u200cmade worse by the proposed rule, which ratchets \u200cdowns \u2064further on the energy and\u2064 water \u2063limits \u2063that are \u200cthe acknowledged \u2064source of \u2063the \u2064problems,\u201d the coalition\u2064 wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Signatories\u200c of the letter to DOE \u2064include The\u200c Heritage \u2064Foundation,\u2063 Institute \u200cfor\u2063 Energy Research, Heartland Institute, American\u200c Consumer Institute, Americans for\u200d Prosperity, and American \u200dFirst \u200bPolicy Institute.<\/p>\n<p>Opposition \u200dto new \u2064dishwasher efficiency\u2063 standards comes\u2064 amid the\u2062 Biden \u200cadministration\u2019s broader\u2063 crackdown \u2064on home\u200c appliances in the name of fighting climate change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A coalition of industry and consumer groups strongly opposes the Biden administration&#8217;s plan to regulate dishwashers in their fight against climate change.
