DeSantis\u2019 Attempt to Limit Tenure at Florida\u2019s Public Universities\">tenured faculty member<\/a>,\u2062 was \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2023\/03\/10\/equity-director-targeted-she-says-questioning-antiracist-orthodoxy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fired<\/a> in March \u200bby De \u200cAnza College,\u200d a \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/dem-budget-would-hand-out-cash-to-students-at-tuition-free-colleges\/\" title=\"Dem Budget Would Hand Out Cash to Students at Tuition-Free Colleges\">public community college<\/a> \u200din the San Jose area, after\u2062 she said \u200bshe questioned antiracist\u2064 \u201corthodoxy\u201d in\u200d her \u200dposition\u200b as DEI\u200d director.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n \u200b <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told \u2062that \u200c[I] was \u2062supposed \u200cto\u2063 only\u200d advance \u2064what\u200d at\u2064 that\u2063 time\u200b I \u2063was\u200c calling a\u200c third-wave antiracism\u200d ideology,\u201d\u2062 Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2023\/03\/10\/equity-director-targeted-she-says-questioning-antiracist-orthodoxy\" \u2064target=\"_blank\" \u2063rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in March.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On \u2064July\u200b 10, Lee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/dei-college-director-fired-not-being-right-kind-black-person-1813481\" \u200ctarget=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed<\/a> a lawsuit\u200c against the \u200bcollege, alleging \u2062a \u200chostile DEI\u2064 department \u2064\u201cillegally targeting White people on the\u200d basis\u2062 of race.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n \u200d <\/p>\n<p>The complaint\u200d says Lee, \u2062who is black, was \u2064accused of\u2062 \u201cwhitesplaining\u201d\u200b and not \u200dbeing the \u201cright kind of \u200bBlack person.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cShe \u200dhappens to be Black, but first and \u200bforemost, \u200dDr.\u2062 Lee \u2063is a teacher dedicated to humanism and civil rights,\u201d \u2062the\u2062 complaint reads. \u2063\u201cShe teaches that \u2062people should not\u200c be judged by the\u200c color of their skin\u2063 but\u2064 by the \u2062content of their character. De Anza\u2062 is\u2063 hostile to this \u2063concept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The community college district\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2023\/03\/10\/equity-director-targeted-she-says-questioning-antiracist-orthodoxy\" target=\"_blank\" \u2062rel=\"noopener\">reportedly<\/a>\u2062 informed Lee\u2062 in \u200da \u200bletter that the official reasons for\u2062 her\u200d firing\u200b was a \u2063\u201cpersistent inability \u2062to \u2062demonstrate cooperation\u200d in working\u2063 with colleagues and \u200dstaff,\u201d her \u201cunwillingness to \u2062accept constructive\u200b criticism\u201d and \u201cno \u200cexpectation\u200c on the\u200c part \u2062of the\u200b Tenure \u2063Review\u200c Committee \u2026 \u200dthat\u200b improvements\u200d in these\u2062 two critical areas can \u200dever\u200c be\u2062 achieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThese \u2063are\u200c people who should definitely\u2062 know better,\u201d Lee\u2063 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/dei-college-director-fired-not-being-right-kind-black-person-1813481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Newsweek. \u201cAnd the\u2062 way\u200d that they behaved was what they claim other people do to marginalized\u200b people.\u2064 They literally marginalized me as\u200b an individual, \u200dand \u200cthey shunned \u2062me \u2064and\u200d they worked\u2063 really\u200c hard \u2063to push me out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Lee \u2062previously\u2063 said her \u200btermination came after \u200bshe questioned\u200d and objected\u200c to\u2062 some \u200cof the DEI department\u2019s initiatives,\u2062 Inside Higher \u200bEd \u2062<a \u2063href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2023\/03\/10\/equity-director-targeted-she-says-questioning-antiracist-orthodoxy\" \u200btarget=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She objected to the\u2063 college\u2019s land acknowledgments for\u2064 a Native\u2062 American tribe, she tried to spearhead \u2062a \u2063\u201cJewish inclusion\u201d\u200b event on\u200c campus,\u200b she\u200d refused to join \u200ca\u200d \u201csocialist network,\u201d she declined to\u2063 use\u2063 the gender-neutral term \u201cLatinx,\u201d and\u2063 she \u200basked \u200bwhy \u201cBlack\u201d was capitalized but\u2062 not\u2064 \u201cwhite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lee\u2064 said \u200bshe\u2062 was\u200c called a\u2063 \u201cb****\u201d and dictatorial\u201d \u2062for\u200b suggesting a pause\u200d on\u200d the college\u2019s land acknowledgements,\u200d when\u200b what \u200cshe actually\u200d wanted to \u200bdo was add\u2063 changes that the \u2063Native\u200d American tribes themselves suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Lee also \u200csaid the same \u2062person who invited\u200c her\u200c to join the \u201csocialist \u200cnetwork\u201d \u2064accused \u200bher of disrespecting a \u2062Black Lives Matter \u2064founder.<\/p>\n<p>At one \u2062point, a college \u200bemployee even accused \u200bher of supporting\u2063 white supremacy, Lee \u2064said.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2063 also \u200dsaid, \u201cI no longer \u200bparticipate in \u2064gender \u200cpronouns because I find that the same\u200d toxic\u200c ideologies around \u200brace\u2064 ideologies are now being advanced \u200cunder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/parents-say-policies-meant-to-help-transgender-kids-are-misguided\/\" title=\"Parents Say Policies Meant To Help Transgender Kids Are Misguided\">gender ideologies<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lee currently wants her \u200cold\u200c faculty position\u200b back along\u2063 with \u2064restitution for financial \u2063damages.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fired-black-dei-director-files-lawsuit-saying-college-was-illegally-targeting-white-people\/\" title=\"Black DEI Director sues college, personnel \u2064matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout commenting on\u200c any specific\u2062 matter,\u200b we\u2062 can share that\u200c faculty members have\u200c <a
