It is a crapshoot, in some sense. \u2063It does \u2064not matter if there is consistency in category structure across \u200dthe different categories of\u2062 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/campaign-2024-an-early-look-at-the-possible-republican-contenders\/\" title=\"Campaign 2024: An Early Look At The Possible Republican Contenders\">identity politics<\/a>. All that matters \u2062is that \u2062enough people\u2063 will\u200d coalesce\u2062 around each\u2063 term. I \u200cthink that is reasonable because many, many terms have been generated \u2014 like ageism, for example. Although, we have not seen much identity politics \u200bemerge around\u2064 age,\u2062 but that is probably\u200d because it \u2062did\u2063 not coalesce. You can think about it \u2063as a Darwinian process,\u200d in\u2062 some\u2063 sense. \u200bThere are 100 terms of alienation, and 10\u2064 of\u2062 them generate\u2064 enough social attention\u2064 to become viable sociological and political phenomena. \u200cAnd they continue \u2063to breed, but that \u2064is\u200c because they \u200dbreed whenever there\u2062 is \u200benough people to \u200bgarner enough \u2062attention.<\/p>\n<p>Now, \u200bthe \u200dproblem I have with that \u2014\u200b and I \u2063have \u2063been thinking\u200d about \u200bthis for a\u200b long time \u2014 is \u2064the notion of \u2064identity that\u200b lurks at the \u2063bottom\u200d of this. Because \u200cI think \u2063part of\u200c the problem\u200b with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/identity-as-a-consequence-of-the-lived-experience\/\" title=\"Identity shaped by lived experiences.\">identity politics\u2019 grand narrative<\/a> is that, partly because of\u2063 its\u2062 incoherence, it \u2063does not offer anything that looks like a \u200breal solution. That is partly because its definition of what \u2064constitutes \u2062identity seems \u2063to \u2064be \u2063almost incomprehensibly shallow, \u2064especially for social\u2063 constructivists. The\u2063 central idea seems\u200c to be that identity is something that \u200dyou \u2062define yourself,\u200c and it is a consequence of your lived\u2063 experience. So no one has any \u200bright to state anything about your identity other than you\u2062 because\u2063 they do not \u200dhave access to your own subjective experiences.<\/p>\n<p>I would not want\u2063 to make \u200bthe claim\u2063 that there is \u2062nothing in that because \u200cthere is\u2062 a \u200bdomain of\u2063 subjective \u2063experience that \u200cis\u2064 unique\u2063 \u2014\u2063 like \u2063pain,\u200d for example. There is no doubt that it\u2063 is\u2064 real and\u2062 that\u200d it is \u2063vital \u200band important. \u2064But the \u200dproblem with that seems\u200d to me \u2062to \u200cbe\u2063 that identity\u200c is not only\u200c a\u200d consequence \u2063of your subjective experience. \u2064In fact, it is not even\u200c a label \u200bfor your subjective \u200bexperience. Identity seems to me\u200c to be a handbag of tools\u2062 that \u2063you employ to make\u200d your \u200dway in the natural\u2063 and social world. \u200bIt\u200c is\u2062 something more\u2064 pragmatic.\u2062 It is like the role you might play if \u2063you\u2063 were \u2063playing \u2062a \u200dgame \u2062with other people. You can pick your \u200brole,\u2064 but it has to be \u2062part of the game. That \u2062means\u2064 people have to \u2064accept you as a \u200cplayer, and that there are certain\u200b functions\u2062 that\u200d you \u200bhave\u200d to undertake when you fulfill that\u2064 role. That is actually beneficial\u2063 to you because partly\u200b what you \u2063want from\u2063 an \u200bidentity \u2063is a \u2063set of guidelines for \u2063how it is that\u2062 you\u2063 should\u2062 act in the\u200c world.<\/p>\n<p>The problem with a lot \u200dof these newer categories \u2014 \u2062and I think \u2062trans \u2064is a \u2064good example of\u2064 that \u2014 is\u200b that\u2062 even if the category\u200d was accepted \u200cas valid on \u2064the grounds\u2064 of its \u2064proposed validity (which is the\u2064 felt sense\u2062 of\u2062 being\u2062 a man if you are a woman or being a\u200d woman \u2063if you\u200d are a man), it is \u200bnot obvious what that \u200bbuys you. [\u2026] The\u200c fundamental flaw that I see in \u2062identity\u2064 politics is that, \u2062even though it is simultaneously predicated on \u200dthe idea \u2063that identity is \u2063a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ca-gender-prof-covid-revealed-the-tragedy-of-heterosexuality\/\" title=\"CA Gender Prof: COVID Revealed The \u2018Tragedy Of Heterosexuality\u2019\">social construct<\/a>\u2062 and that \u2064it is a felt\u2064 sense, \u200cit can\u2019t be \u2064both of \u2063those. It is, in \u200dfact,\u2063 a social \u2062construct with\u200c biological\u2062 root. The fact that it is \u200ba social\u2064 construct means\u200c that it is\u2063 something \u2064that is by necessity\u200b negotiated\u2064 with\u200c others, not imposed upon \u200bthem by fiat. \u2062And\u2062 it has to \u200cbe \u200bnegotiated with \u2064others \u200dbecause \u200cotherwise\u2063 they will not\u200d play with you.\u200b [\u2026]\u200d We are each a\u2064 solitude in some sense for\u200b <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/miami-police-chief-warns-fed-action-needed-to-curb-rising-crime\/\" title=\"Miami Police Chief Warns Fed Action Needed To Curb Rising Crime\">multiple reasons<\/a>, for\u200c multiple\u200c intersectional reasons \u200bfor \u200bthat\u200c matter. But \u2063that does \u2062not mean that communication is\u2064 impossible or\u2063 that it should be \u200bforegone, unless \u200byou want the\u200b alternative.
