Jean\u2064 Carroll. Judge \u2062Lewis Kaplan \u200dof\u200d the U.S. \u200bDistrict \u200dCourt for \u200dthe Southern\u2064 District \u2063of\u200c New\u200b York \u200bdefended the trial, which resulted \u200cin\u2062 a\u200c jury finding Trump\u200b liable\u200c for \u2062sexual\u200b abuse\u200d and defamation,\u200d but\u2064 not\u200c rape, \u2063and awarded \u2063Carroll roughly\u200b $5 million \u200din damages.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  \u2062<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The \u200bjury\u2062 in this case did not \u200dreach \u200d&#8217;a seriously erroneous result.&#8217; Its verdict is\u2063 not \u2062&#8217;a miscarriage\u2064 of justice.&#8217; Mr.\u2064 Trump&#8217;s motion\u200c for \u2063a new \u200ctrial on \u2064damages\u200c or a remittitur\u2062 is\u200d denied,&#8221; Kaplan wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s lawyers \u200dhave\u200d amended their appeal \u2062to \u200bthe U.S. Court\u2063 of Appeals\u200c for \u2062the \u2062Second Circuit\u200d to include Kaplan&#8217;s rejection of the\u200c motion \u200cfor a new trial.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s \u2062lawyers had argued \u200bthat\u200b the damages awarded to Carroll by\u2063 the jury \u2063were &#8220;grossly excessive under the \u2064applicable\u200d case\u2064 law&#8221; \u200cin\u200b the \u200cmotion for the\u200b new\u200c trial filed last month.<\/p>\n<p>The former\u2063 president\u2063 himself \u200bhas \u200cclaimed that\u2062 the \u200dverdict\u200d was\u2063 &#8220;a\u200b miscarriage of justice and \u200ba \u200dtotal scam,&#8221; also alleging\u2063 that \u2063&#8221;the trial \u2064was\u200b very\u200d unfair.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Carroll\u2064 accused Trump of\u2064 raping her in \u200ca department store\u200d in\u2063 New York \u2063City \u2064in\u200b the\u200d mid-1990s\u200b and\u200d further accused him of defaming \u200dher\u2063 for\u200d statements he made \u2063in\u200d response to her accusations.
