Scott \u200dPerry (R-Pa.) outside\u2063 of\u200c the\u2062 U.S.\u2064 Capitol \u2064in Washington\u200b on \u2064May 30, \u200d2023. \u200b(Mandel \u200cNgan\/AFP via Getty Images)<br \/>\n  <\/figure>\n<p>\u2064 \u2064 <\/p>\n<p>The Republican\u2064 lawmaker \u2063then said\u200c that many \u200dpeople \u200bon\u2063 lower \u2064incomes wouldn\u2019t be able \u200dto\u200b afford a new gas\u2064 stove\u200c compliant\u2063 with the \u2064new \u2063rules, and so would\u200b opt for an electric stove but\u2064 pointed\u2062 out that \u2064installing one \u2064could be \u200ccostly.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2062<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re not\u2062 making \u2063a lot of money, you\u2064 can\u2019t afford the\u2064 expensive one \u200cthat \u2062probably will meet it, so \u2062you\u2019ve\u200b got \u2062to try and buy the\u2062 other\u200b one,\u201d\u2064 he said, joking that \u200bhe\u2019s\u200b glad \u2064the\u200c DOE \u2064is\u2064 getting people \u200cto\u200d save \u200cmoney \u2062by\u2063 \u201cforcing\u200c them to\u2062 spend a\u2063 bunch of \u200dmoney.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u200d \u200c <\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u2063Perry\u200c continued \u200cby \u2062saying, \u201cif you \u2063have\u2064 gas stove in\u2064 your\u200b home \u2063right now, there\u2019s a gas line coming \u200bto it\u2063 and probably \u2063a 110\u2064 [electrical] connection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u200b  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo\u200c you know \u2062what it \u2062takes \u200bto \u200bput \u2063an \u2064electric\u2062 stove in \u2063your home? \u200dDo \u2063you have any idea?\u201d\u200d he \u2062then asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I \u200ddon\u2019t, \u2064but\u2026\u201d\u2062 Ms.\u2062 Richmond\u2062 replied, \u200cand before \u200bshe \u2062could \u2062elaborate, Mr.\u2062 Perry\u2062 cut her off.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere,\u200d I\u200d do! You \u2064got \u200bto run \u2063a \u200d220 line.
