Society<\/h2>\n<p> \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>The \u201cconsensus\u2064 enforcement mechanism\u201d of\u200b censorship\u2064 on\u200b social media \u200dhas not\u2062 only been an attack \u2064on \u200bcivil liberty but \u2062has also sapped the \u2063public\u200c square of a desire\u2062 to reach the \u200btruth, according\u200b to journalist Matt \u2064Taibbi.<\/p>\n<p>Where there was\u200c once a hunger\u200c for freedom, \u200bthere is \u200cnow \u2062a collective apathy over fighting to\u2064 keep it \u2064preserved, Mr. Taibbi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn\u200b parallel to\u2063 this \u2064censorship \u2062program,\u2063 I think what \u2063they\u2019re \u2063doing with things like \u2064shadow \u2063banning and deny listing is\u2062 they\u2019re trying \u200dto simplify controversies\u2062 and reduce everybody\u2019s field of view,\u201d \u200dMr. Taibbi said \u200cin \u200dan interview \u2063for EpochTV\u2019s \u2062\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/c-american-thought-leaders\">American Thought \u200dLeaders<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In doing \u2063so, the will\u2062 to be\u2062 curious and think about issues in\u200b a complicated way has been\u2064 exhausted, he \u200csaid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s making us less\u2062 interested\u200b in \u200cfighting for our\u200c rights,\u201d Mr. Taibbi said.<\/p>\n<p>In\u200c 2022, Mr.\u200c Taibbi uncovered an\u2064 FBI\u200d censorship \u200boperation in partnership \u2064with \u2063former \u200dTwitter \u2064staff, which became known as the \u200b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mysterious-government-agencies-participated-in-suppressing-twitter-content-twitter-files_4944499.html\">Twitter\u2062 Files<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In\u2064 his\u200c speech at \u201cFreedom\u2063 Fest\u201d in Memphis, \u2062Tennessee\u200c on July 14, Mr. Taibbi said \u200cwhat he found \u2063unbelievable \u200bwas\u2063 not \u200cthe government \u2063the\u200c situation,\u201d Mr. Taibbi \u2062said\u2063 in\u2062 the speech. \u2064\u201cThis\u2064 included \u200bpeople\u2062 I \u2062knew.\u200b Many people \u2064in America are \u2064not \u200djust accepting of digital censorship, they\u200d believe it\u200c to\u200b be vitally necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>  \u2064<\/p>\n<p>The American public had formerly\u2062 been \u200cknown \u200cfor its rebellious, fighting spirit, willing to\u200b protest government overreach, but \u200cwhat\u2019s\u2062 taken\u2062 place over\u200d the\u200b last several \u200byears has homogenized \u2064that spirit \u200cinto \u2062compliance, \u200che said.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2064<\/p>\n<p>This homogenization has\u2064 only \u2063been \u2063facilitated\u200d by \u2063social \u200cmedia, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b  \u2062<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI \u2063was one \u2062of the first people\u200d in the \u2018mainstream media\u2019 to\u200b worry about \u2063it [internet censorship] in the \u2062States, and one of the\u2062 first\u2063 things\u2063 I was told is that social media is \u2062addictive,\u2062 the same way\u2063 cigarettes\u200b are addictive,\u201d Mr. Taibbi \u200bsaid. \u200b\u201cThere\u2064 are \u2063studies done about how people get \u2062dopamine hits even from feeling,\u200b for instance,\u200b the \u200cwaffle \u200dpattern\u200b on the \u2064back\u2064 of\u2064 their\u200d phones; \u200cthey\u2019re addicted to the\u2062 whole \u200bprocess of looking \u200dat their phones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This addiction fuels an internet\u200c culture that \u2063is \u2064intrinsically anti-individualistic,\u2062 he said, which most prominently shows\u2063 in \u2062younger people whose \u200dself-worth becomes ensnared by how much attention they\u2019re\u200b getting on social\u200c media,\u2063 leaving\u200d them to not rely\u2063 on \u200cself-creation but instead group \u200capproval.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Mr. \u2062Taibbi said \u2063this \u2063mindset is contrary \u2062to the American\u200d spirit.<\/p>\n<p>\u2064 \u200b <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe \u2063Americans\u2062 once cherished\u2062 independence\u2062 and lived off folk tales about \u2064going \u200doff on one\u2019s own, on the open road,\u201d he said in \u200bhis\u200d speech. \u201cThink about Ishmael,\u2064 or\u2063 Huck \u200cand Jim, or Chuck Berry,\u2063 who\u2063 picked\u200d up a guitar and sang \u200babout \u2062setting out \u200cwith\u2064 \u2018no \u2064particular place to go,\u2019 creating a dazzling sound \u200dthat touched a nerve with \u200bthe whole\u200b world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>But that\u200b spirit has departed, \u200bMr. Taibbi\u2062 said.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d  \u200d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2063 never \u200chad to\u200b think about\u200c how \u2062we \u200bfit into \u2063a crowd as much as \u200bwe\u2063 do now,\u201d \u2062he told EpochTV. \u201cAnd I think\u200d internet culture wraps up \u200ceverybody so much (House\u2062 Judiciary\u200c Committee\/Screenshot via \u200dNTD)<br \/>\n\u2064  <\/figure>\n<h2>A Chilling \u2064Effect\u2062 on Individual Thought<\/h2>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>This\u200c herd behavior has contaminated \u200cjournalism, \u2062a field that he \u200csaid in\u2064 the \u2062past \u200cinstructed people to\u200b go \u200bin the \u200copposite \u2064direction,\u2064 ask questions, and think critically.<\/p>\n<p>\u2063  \u2063<\/p>\n<p>In\u2064 media \u2063today, he said, journalists are discouraged to \u200bstep out of the narrative.<\/p>\n<p>\u200c  \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, the\u2063 stars of our business \u200dand \u200cmainstream\u200d media\u200d are all people who go along with the consensus view of things, and it\u2019s very frowned upon\u2063 to raise\u200b questions\u200b about things \u200bthat have \u2018been \u200bdecided,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>This fear has spread into academia\u200d and\u2064 newsrooms, Mr. Taibbi said, creating a\u2063 chilling \u200deffect\u2063 on the sharing of individual thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s just \u200ca terrible atmosphere for\u200c this kind of job because you need to have\u200c that\u200b spirit of \u2064free \u2063inquiry in\u2062 order \u200dto get to the truth,\u201d Mr. Taibbi said.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2064<\/p>\n<p>Investigative reporting\u200b isn\u2019t about\u2064 garnering popularity by reinforcing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/mass-formation-why-people-cant-let-go-of-the-covid-narrative\/\" title=\"\u201cMass Formation\u201d: Why People Can\u2019t Let Go of the COVID Narrative\">shared consensus<\/a>, Mr. Taibbi\u2063 said, though\u200b that\u2019s \u2063what journalism \u2064today has\u200d become.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200b<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour \u200caverage investigative journalist\u2014the good\u2063 ones\u2014are\u200b difficult,\u2064 prickly people\u2063 who\u2062 go \u200cagainst\u2064 the\u200c grain, and they \u200bkeep digging until\u200b they find what\u2064 they think is\u2062 the truth,\u201d \u200bhe\u2064 said. \u201cTake \u2064somebody like Seymour Hersh\u2014that is \u200cexactly the kind of person the \u200ccurrent system \u200dis \u2064designed \u200dto weed out\u2014the person\u2062 who \u2062doesn\u2019t accept \u200bon its face whatever the official explanation \u200cof things is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2064 \u2064 <\/p>\n<p>Hersh reported in February\u2063 an\u200c allegation \u2062that the Biden administration had sanctioned a military operation\u2064 that involved destroying three\u200d of \u200dthe four Nord\u2063 Stream pipelines, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/in-depth-online-censorship-corrupts-the-american-spirit-of-individual-free-thought-journalist-matt-taibbi\/\" title=\"Online censorship corrupts individual freedom of thought in America, says journalist Matt Taibbi.\">legacy\u2062 media outlets \u2064issued<\/a> \u200bthe \u2063consensus\u200d that\u2062 their \u200cdestruction\u200c was \u201ca mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2062  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s \u2064the\u2064 attitude\u200d of a \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/exclusive-independent-journalist-tayler-hansen-a-riot-that-turned-deadly-what-i-witnessed-at-the-us-capitol-riot\/\" title=\"EXCLUSIVE: Independent Journalist Tayler Hansen: A Riot that Turned Deadly, What I Witnessed at the US Capitol Riot\">real journalist<\/a>,\u201d Mr. Taibbi said. \u201cThey\u2062 don\u2019t want that \u200dperson anymore and \u200cit wasn\u2019t until about 10 years ago that\u200c I\u200b started to see people expressing that \u200dopenly in the \u200cbusiness. (Win \u2062McNamee\/Getty\u200d Images)<br \/>\n \u2064\u2062 <\/figure>\n<p>After \u2062the book \u201cAll the President\u2019s Men\u201d was published in 1974 \u2063about the \u20641972\u200d Watergate \u200bscandal, followed by a\u200d 1976\u2064 film,\u2062 journalism became\u200b more appealing to\u200d the sons and\u2063 daughters\u200b of the\u200d wealthy elite, Mr. Taibbi\u200d said.<\/p>\n<p> \u200d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, \u200dthis created\u200b a problem, especially \u200bI noticed\u200c on the campaign trail\u200b because they were the same\u2062 people socially as \u200dthe people they\u200b were \u2064reporting on,\u201d\u2062 Mr. Taibbi said.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2062<\/p>\n<p>Instead of being adversarial, reporters\u2064 had entered into \u2063a cooperative relationship with the\u2063 political players,\u200b Mr.\u200d Taibbi said.<\/p>\n<p> \u200b <\/p>\n<p>As an example, Mr. \u200bTaibbi pointed to\u200b the 1996 book \u200c\u201cPrimary Colors,\u201d which was\u2062 first\u200c published \u200danonymously, \u2064though \u200bit was\u2063 later found \u200dto be written \u2062by \u200bcolumnist Joe Klein.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Klein mixed fiction\u200c and \u200dnonfiction to\u2063 tell \u200cthe\u200d story of former \u200bPresident\u200b Bill Clinton\u2019s \u20621992\u200b campaign trail.<\/p>\n<p> \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of \u2018All the\u2062 President\u2019s Men,\u2019 \u2062this \u200dwas \u2064somebody \u2062who got in the\u2064 inside and told \u200cthe\u200c story from the point\u200d of\u200b view\u200b of the candidate,\u2064 as\u200b opposed \u200bto looking at the\u2064 candidate on behalf \u2063of the \u200cpublic,\u201d Mr. Taibbi\u200b said.<\/p>\n<p>\u200c  <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Consensus Enforcement Mechanism\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>  \u200c<\/p>\n<p>During\u2064 former \u2064President Barack Obama\u2019s\u2063 administration,\u2063 and later under \u2063former President\u200c Donald Trump, \u200cjournalists galvanized \u200dinto what\u2064 Mr. \u2064Taibbi called a \u201cconsensus \u200benforcement mechanism\u201d resembling the \u2063Soviet, \u201clow-rent advertisement\u201d reporting\u2064 that carried\u2062 water for the factions of\u2064 the Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p>With \u2062no \u200devidence, American \u2064journalists\u2062 took unsupported stories like \u2063the allegation\u2063 that Trump had worked with the Russian government to get elected and attacked anyone who\u2062 questioned\u2064 the\u2062 narrative, Mr. Taibbi said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was recognizing the\u200b same \u2063kinds of language that we saw\u200b in the WMD [Iraq weapons \u200cof \u2062mass \u2062destruction] affair, where a \u2062lot of people were talking about \u2063anonymous\u200d sources,\u2063 referring\u2063 to things that \u200ccould not be independently confirmed by other reporters,\u201d Mr. Taibbi \u200dsaid. \u201cLike science, \u2063if you can\u2019t repeat the \u2064experiment\u200d in \u200bthe \u2063lab,\u2063 you\u2019ve \u200cgot to be a little \u2064bit\u2063 nervous\u2063 about it.
