On one\u200c hand, \u2064traditionalists\u2062 espouse a belief in\u2064 faith, \u200dfamily, and objective virtue, and \u200coppose the encroachments\u2063 of leftist ideology.\u2064 On the other \u200chand, they\u200c are skeptical \u200dof liberalism\u2062 and \u2062Enlightenment ideals, reject most modern institutions,\u200d and tend \u2063to harbor antiquated prejudices \u2062that\u2062 make little sense \u2063in \u200ba \u2062diverse, pluralistic \u200bsociety.<\/p>\n<p>   \u2063 \u2062<\/p>\n<p>However,\u200d it would \u200bbe a \u200dmistake to relegate \u2062traditional conservatives to\u200c the fringes, \u2062as \u2063often\u200c happens. \u2064Although they\u2019re\u200c devoted \u200dto the\u200b past, they represent \u2063the future\u200b of \u2064the \u200cconservative \u200bmovement.\u2062 Many of \u200bthem\u200c are \u200bhighly educated, hardworking, \u200dand \u200cmost\u2062 importantly, have\u200c large families.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2-long\u200d d-flex justify-content-center\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right:\u200d auto;\u200d text-align: center;\u2063 \" \u200did=\"fdrlst__b89e9-910786004\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1379703300879-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div\u200d class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-980a0ee2ffc51ded8484fec319f01dbd fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2\"\u2064 id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-980a0ee2ffc51ded8484fec319f01dbd\"><\/div>\n<p>\u2062 \u2063   <\/p>\n<p>Contrary to\u200b popular\u200b notions, \u2064many of\u200c them do \u2062just fine in the modern\u2063 world. \u2062Unlike most \u2064people\u2063 who are caught up \u200din the \u200bamenities, mores,\u200d and narratives \u2062of the present, traditionalists\u2063 have the capacity to choose \u200cwhat\u200d works for\u2063 them \u2063and \u2063become \u200cmore\u2063 self-reliant. In many ways, they \u200doffer a model \u2062of \u200csuccess \u200cfor\u200b people\u200d today who want to have happier, healthier, and \u200dmore fruitful lives.<\/p>\n<p>   \u200d <\/p>\n<p>Perhaps sensing\u2063 this deep\u200d desire among people \u2062wanting\u200d a way to face the challenges of modernism, writer\u200c and\u2063 diplomat Eduard Habsburg has \u200bwritten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisismagazine.com\/product\/the-habsburg-way\"><em>The Habsburg Way: Seven \u2063Rules \u200dfor Turbulent Times<\/em><\/a>. A proud \u2063descendent of \u2063the Habsburg royal family \u2064that ruled over \u2064various \u2063swaths of\u200b Europe\u2063 for \u2064eight centuries,\u200d Habsburg explains the secret to his family\u2019s success and \u2062offers a practical \u2062guide for a \u2064better life.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062   <\/p>\n<p>Habsburg \u200corganizes his \u200cbook into seven \u200bdifferent rules, yet \u2063these rules\u200c are\u2064 really \u2063based\u200d on two \u2064core ideas: family\u2062 and\u200d faith.\u2062 Family \u200bestablishes the framework \u200cfor \u2062success while faith \u200densures consistency and\u2063 longevity.<\/p>\n<p> \u200d \u2064 \u200b <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Family and Local Governance<\/h2>\n<p>    \u2063<\/p>\n<p>As such,\u200b he\u2064 begins\u2063 his\u2064 list\u2062 with the first\u200b rule: \u201cGet Married (and Have Lots of Children).\u201d\u2062 This rule seems\u2064 so\u200c obvious, but it\u2064 has become counterintuitive today.\u2063 Rather \u2063than\u200d being reminded of \u2063the joys that\u200c come from \u200bfinding a\u2063 soulmate and bringing\u2063 life \u2063into \u2063the \u200bworld, single \u2062adults \u200cin the prime of life are bombarded \u200bwith the\u200b message that spouses and children \u200dare \u2062intolerable burdens. \u2063Taking the\u200b opposite\u200d view, Habsburg\u2064 cites\u2064 the \u2062example of his ancestors who \u2064show how \u2062there is \u200bstrength \u200bin \u2062numbers and peace\u2063 through that strength: \u201cWhile \u200cfew \u2064modern\u2064 marriages end up \u200cremaking continental map \u200cthe way\u200c the\u200c Habsburg marriages\u200c did, \u2062it is almost \u2064a\u200d truism that marriages that \u200dproduce children quite\u200d literally\u2062 form their \u200dfamilies\u2019 \u200cfuture.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4f9a4ca347e708bc6ea04deacb13a51a fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\"\u200b id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-4f9a4ca347e708bc6ea04deacb13a51a\"><\/div>\n<p>  \u2064  \u200d<\/p>\n<p>Of\u200b course, one \u2063may object that\u2063 the\u2063 times \u2063have changed and \u2063finding a wife or husband has become \u200bimpossible.\u200c Habsburg answers\u200d this excuse\u200c with\u2062 the\u200d story \u200bof\u200c Maximillian, dubbed \u2064\u201cthe \u200bLast Knight,\u201d\u200d who was\u2062 betrothed to\u200b Mary\u200c of \u2062Burgundy,\u2062 the daughter of Duke Charles the \u200dBold.\u2062 Well before the\u200b couple ever met\u200c one \u2064another, they \u2063communicated\u2062 through \u200cletters. \u2063When \u200cMary\u2019s\u2064 father\u200c died, \u2062she implored Maximillian \u2062to come \u2064with an army to save\u200b her and her kingdom from\u2063 the predations\u2064 of the \u2062French king. \u2062Clad\u2063 in\u2062 golden armor and accompanied by a \u200clarge army, Maximillian came \u200cto the rescue and \u200cmarried his bride the\u2063 following\u2063 day.<\/p>\n<p> \u200c  \u200d <\/p>\n<p>Despite these circumstances, their marriage \u2063was\u2063 a \u2063happy one. \u200dConsidering it was prearranged, the relationship \u2064was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/trump-doj-subpoenaed-twitter-over-account-criticizing-ally-devin-nunes\/\" title=\"Trump DOJ Subpoenaed Twitter Over Account Criticizing Ally Devin Nunes\">long-distance<\/a>, \u200band \u201ctheir only\u2063 common language\u200d was \u2062Latin,\u201d this\u200b makes little\u2063 sense. The\u200b same goes for the 73\u200c Austro-Spanish \u200dHabsburg marriages that\u2064 were also\u2063 \u201cvery\u2062 happy.\u201d\u2063 On \u2063this point, Habsburg\u200b declares that interior \u2063values matter far more than external\u2062 factors: \u201ca successful marriage doesn\u2019t \u200cdepend on\u2062 marrying a\u200d cousin, but it \u2064does \u200brequire \u2064being\u200c with\u2062 someone \u200cwho\u200c shares your values,\u200b ideas, faith, and\u2062 outlook.\u201d\u2064 This goes against \u200cthe practice of <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2016\/06\/28\/rape-culture-and-hookup-culture-are-two-sides-of-the-same-coin\/\">hookup\u200b culture<\/a>,\u200b <a\u2063 href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/01\/28\/cohabitation-traps-people-using\/\">cohabitation<\/a>, \u200cor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisismagazine.com\/opinion\/how-colleges-contribute-to-the-current-dating-crisis\">having \u2064the same\u2064 political views<\/a> that so many single \u2064adults depend\u200c on\u200b to\u200b determine who might \u200dbe\u200b marriage material.<\/p>\n<p>What \u200dfollows from a \u200bhappy\u200c marriage blessed\u2064 with children \u2064is a\u2064 family-oriented vision of oneself and the world.\u2062 On \u200da cultural level,\u2063 this\u2064 comes in\u200d the form\u2064 of \u200cHabsburg\u2019s \u200cthird rule, \u201cBelieve \u2064in \u200bthe \u2062Empire\u200c (and in Subsidiarity)\u201d; on \u2063an individual\u200b level\u200b this \u2063comes in the form of \u2062his \u200cfifth rule, \u2063\u201cKnow \u2062Who You Are (and Live Accordingly).\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u200d  \u200c <\/p>\n<p>As fewer \u2063people marry \u2064and have families,\u200c more of them depend on \u2062<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/graham-how-to-blow-up-the-lefts-terrorist-narrative\/\" title=\"GRAHAM: How to Blow Up The Left\u2019s Terrorist Narrative\">big government<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/president-trump-senate-republicans-pile-on-pressure-to-approve-2k-stimulus-payments\/\" title=\"President Trump, Senate Republicans pile on pressure to approve K stimulus payments\">big business<\/a> to fill\u2064 the\u2062 material\u2064 and spiritual\u200d void\u2063 that results. \u2064By\u2064 contrast,\u200c when\u2064 people\u200c grow up in the\u200c context\u2064 of a \u200cfamily, \u2063they\u2063 form\u2064 long-term \u2063relationships, partake\u2063 in myriad rituals\u200d and\u2063 traditions,\u2063 and\u200b live by an \u200destablished set of standards and\u2064 expectations \u200b\u2014 all of\u200d which \u200dcontribute to \u2062their sense of\u200c self. Even if the\u2062 Habsburgs\u200b were \u2062somehow not a royal dynasty, they \u2064were a family that was steadfast throughout the centuries: \u201cThe Habsburgs \u200dwere slow\u2062 to \u200dchange,\u200d stood for \u200ccontinuity\u200b and\u200c traditional values, and \u2062(with the\u200d exception \u200cof Joseph \u2062II) stand for the values of their fathers as a\u2063 matter \u200dof honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<div\u200c class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fa2f2f8546b2c6d78c82bbefcb3d0b35 fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-fa2f2f8546b2c6d78c82bbefcb3d0b35\"><\/div>\n<p>   \u2062\u2064 <\/p>\n<p>In \u200bconjunction \u2062with the commitment to family identity is\u2062 taking a decentralized, localized approach to governance.\u2062 Most \u200cchildren in \u200ba stable \u2063family environment will learn \u2062to\u200b solve their own \u200cproblems\u2062 before asking\u2062 their parents, \u2062and \u2064most\u200c parents will \u2064learn to rule\u2062 their \u200dhouseholds \u200dwithout the interventions of institutions outside \u200cthe\u2064 family.\u200b This\u2064 idea \u200cextends to the political realm, where \u2063most social \u2062problems are \u200cbest\u200b resolved\u200d at\u200c the local \u2062level.<\/p>\n<p>   \u200c <\/p>\n<p>Thus, like the parents \u2064of so many\u2062 children,\u2064 the Habsburg \u200bemperors rarely interfered \u2062in the business\u2062 of their constituent \u200bkingdoms and always \u200dsought \u2063to preserve the welfare\u200d of \u200ctheir household \u2062through diplomacy \u200band peaceful coexistence. For this reason,\u200b their \u200cempire \u200bworked more like one\u200b big happy family loosely\u2062 leading other big happy\u200c families than a republic with \u2063a \u2063<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/for-conservatives-theres-a-right-way-a-wrong-way-and-the-habsburg-way\/\" title=\"Conservatives: The Right Way, The Wrong Way, The Habsburg Way\">centralized government\u200b enforcing laws created<\/a> by an \u2062elite class \u200dof politicians.<\/p>\n<p>\u200d    \u200c<\/p>\n<p>Along with the foundation of\u200c family, there\u2064 is the\u2064 foundation of \u200bthe\u200b Catholic\u200b faith. Habsburg\u200d accordingly devotes \u2062two whole chapters on \u200bthe \u2063second rule, \u201cBe Catholic (and\u2062 Practice Your Faith).\u201d\u200c Beginning with \u2064the family\u2019s great \u200bpatriarch\u2062 Rudolf,\u2063 a contemporary\u2063 of St. \u2062Thomas\u2063 Aquinas\u200d in \u200cthe\u2062 13th\u200b century, \u200dthe Habsburgs both preserved\u200d and\u2064 were \u200cpreserved by their Catholic faith\u200d throughout the centuries.\u200d Despite\u2063 periodic threats from \u2063the Muslims\u200d Ottomans \u2063in\u200d the 15th \u2064and \u200d16th\u2063 centuries,\u200d rebellious \u2064Protestants in\u2063 the \u200c16th and 17th \u200dcenturies, \u200dsecular \u2062humanists in \u200dthe\u2062 18th \u2062and\u200b 19th centuries, and fascists \u2064and Marxists in the \u206420th, the \u200dHabsburgs \u2064kept the \u200cfaith \u200bmore \u200cor less intact.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200c  <\/p>\n<p>While Blessed Karl, the last \u200cHabsburg \u200demperor \u2064who lived a \u2064saintly life\u2062 in\u2063 exile two years after his uncle Franz Ferdinand\u2062 was assassinated\u200b in\u2062 1914,\u2063 was \u200ca model \u2063of Habsburg \u200bpiety,\u200b the counterexample of Emperor Joseph\u200d II \u2062(the emperor\u200d known \u2062for\u2062 patronizing Mozart) better\u2063 illustrates how\u2064 faith tends to work in a large\u2064 family. Ruling during the 18th century, \u200cJoseph was \u200d\u201cconsumed \u2064with Enlightenment ideas\u201d and \u201cread, \u2062secretly \u2064and \u200bbehind his mother\u2019s [Maria Theresia\u2019s] back, Voltaire\u200d and \u200cother \u200bwriters \u200dcritical of\u2063 the Catholic \u200dChurch.\u201d \u2062Upon becoming\u200b emperor, Joseph \u2063closed\u200c down the monasteries \u2063of the contemplative \u2062orders, \u200dintroduced \u200dcivil marriage, eliminated a number of feast \u2063days,\u2063 and kept a mistress.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2062 \u2062\u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, Joseph\u2019s family \u2064pulled him \u200caway\u2063 from \u2063embracing\u200c more radical policies\u2063 of\u200d the Enlightenment. He \u200cnever became a\u200b Freemason, \u200bhe \u200cestablished parishes within an hour\u2019s walking\u200d distance, and\u2063 he enacted \u2064his Patent of\u200c Toleration \u2063granting religious \u200bfreedom to\u2064 his citizens. And\u200b he continued going to Mass \u2063and \u2064Confession\u200d and \u2062regularly attended to the needs of the \u2063poor.<\/p>\n<p>\u2062  \u200b  <\/p>\n<h2 \u2064class=\"wp-block-heading\">Law and Justice<\/h2>\n<p>   \u200c\u2064 <\/p>\n<p>The family\u2019s \u2063faith resulted in Habsburg\u2019s two other \u2062rules: Stand\u200d for law and \u2063justice,\u200b and \u2063have \u2064courage.\u200d While most liberal\u2062 governments \u200dare\u200b predicated\u200b on the Hobbesian idea that\u200d human\u2062 beings are naturally evil and\u200d require\u200c constitutions with\u2064 countless restraints and\u2062 regulations, \u2064Habsburg\u2063 considers the possibility\u200d of virtuous leaders who\u200d are trained \u2064from birth \u2063to do the right thing. Whatever criticisms\u2064 have\u2064 been made on\u2062 aristocracies \u2062and monarchies, \u2062he \u2064contends that \u2063in\u200c practice, \u2064they are often \u200bmore responsive \u200cto the will\u2064 of\u2062 the people \u200cand less\u200c prone to\u200b corruption.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200d \u200c <\/p>\n<p>After all, the \u200blife of\u200c a \u200broyal was\u200b one of sacrifice and service. \u2063As a \u2062member \u200dof the\u2063 Habsburg \u2064family, \u200b\u201cyour preference for one region or\u2064 for \u200canother \u200dcouldn\u2019t\u2064 be\u2064 indulged. \u200bYou\u2063 were a \u2063symbol\u200c of unity and had\u2063 to show\u2063 respect \u200cto\u200d all\u200b regions and\u2062 all people.\u201d All \u200dthroughout the Habsburgs\u2019 reigns,\u200c they\u200d were under enormous \u2063pressure \u2063to be examples \u2064to their \u200cpeople,\u2064 govern fairly, and\u2062 defend \u200bthem\u2063 from outside threats \u2014 which is\u2064 why there \u2062is the rule \u2062for courage. \u2064Without the \u200cbravery\u2063 of \u2064Maximilian I, his son Don Juan,\u2062 Leopold I, or Archduke Charles of Austria, not only \u2062would\u2062 the empire be\u200c conquered, \u2062but modern\u200b Europe \u2062itself would \u2062likely not exist.<\/p>\n<p> \u2063 \u200b \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>Besides\u2063 presenting\u200b a readable, concise\u2063 history\u200d of his family in fewer \u2063than 200 \u2064pages,\u200b the \u2063great \u200bfeat that Habsburg achieves in \u200c<em>The Habsburg Way<\/em>\u200d is making\u200c that \u2062history \u2063practical\u2063 and\u2064 relatable for modern readers who\u2062 could desperately use the \u2064advice.\u200c They\u2063 are\u2064 more\u200b than\u200d consumers,\u200d voters, workers, or other cogs in \u2064the great\u2063 machine\u2064 of modernity. They are noble and\u2064 have \u200dthe power\u2063 to \u2062elevate\u200b their lives \u2063and create a \u200blegacy. \u2062There is little \u2064to \u2062lose, and much to\u200c be gained\u200b in following Habsburg\u2019s rules.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2062  <\/p>\n<p>The\u200d same \u200capplies to \u200dconservatives\u2062 who\u2063 dismiss \u2063Habsburg\u2019s traditionalism\u200d as anachronistic \u2064and incompatible\u2064 with the world today. This\u2063 is\u200d clearly\u2064 not the \u200dcase, as \u200bmany families (including Habsburg\u2019s) \u200dhave found\u200c joy and\u200b prosperity \u2064in \u200dliving \u2063by\u2063 the Habsburg way.\u2064 People may debate the merits of applying these \u2062rules \u200dto modern governments (Habsburg\u2019s home country of \u2064Hungary comes closest to this ideal), but it\u2019s nevertheless helpful to have this alternative approach in mind.
