hearing\u200b to discuss the effect\u200c of President Joe Biden\u2019s \u2064changes to border barrier policies \u2063and\u200c their impact \u200don <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/bidens-blue-state-claw-back\/\" title=\"Biden\u2019s Blue State Claw Back\">illegal immigration<\/a> \u2064going\u200c forward.<\/p>\n<p>Republican \u200dlawmakers\u2062 pointed to the \u200dsharp\u200b increase \u200bin\u200b illegal \u2064immigration detentions \u2062and \u201cgotaways\u201d\u2062 that \u2064have flooded\u2062 the border \u200dsince the\u2064 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/biden-terminates-military-border-wall-construction-cancels-contracts\/\" title=\"Biden Terminates Military Border Wall Construction, Cancels Contracts\">barrier project<\/a>\u200d was\u200d halted \u2063by Mr. Biden.<\/p>\n<p>The joint \u200dsubcommittee \u200bhearing by the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border\u200b Security and \u200cEnforcement, led\u2062 by Chairman \u200dClay\u2064 Higgins\u200c (R-La.), and\u200c the Subcommittee on\u2062 Oversight, Investigations,\u200d and Accountability,\u200c led\u200c by\u200b Chairman \u2064Dan\u200b Bishop (R-N.C.), featured \u200bexpert \u2063testimony from\u200d witnesses\u200b from \u2062current and\u2064 former \u2062government officials, \u200da \u200crepresentative from \u200dthe Army \u200bCorps\u2062 of\u200d Engineers, and\u2063 several \u200dnon-government \u2064figures whose lives\u200d have been \u200cimpacted \u200bby the \u200dborder \u2062crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIllegal border \u200dcrossings\u2064 have decreased by\u200c up\u200c to 87 percent \u2063from fiscal\u200d year 2017 \u200dto \u200cfiscal\u200d year \u200b2020,\u201d\u200b Mr.\u200c Higgins\u200c <a \u2063href=\"https:\/\/homeland.house.gov\/joint-subcommittee-hearing-on-consequences-of-biden-admin-halting-border-wall-construction\/\">said,<\/a> referencing the\u200b former\u200d Trump\u2063 administration\u2019s\u200b program\u200b to\u2063 strengthen \u2064barriers \u2064on \u200dthe\u200d southern border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the two \u200dand\u2062 a\u2064 half years \u200dsince President Biden was inaugurated, there \u200chave been \u200dmore than \u20625 \u200bmillion \u2064illegal border crossings and\u200d over one and a half \u2062million\u2062 gotaways \u200b\u2026 If this\u200b trend continues,\u200d the\u2064 Biden\u200c administration\u2062 is\u200c expected\u2064 to reach\u2064 nearly \u2062two and a \u200c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/lawmakers-debate-utility-of-border-war-in-combating-illegal-immigration-crisis\/\" title=\"Lawmakers discuss effectiveness of Border War in tackling immigration crisis.\">half \u200dmillion alien \u2063encounters<\/a> at the\u200b southern border\u2064 by the end\u200c of September \u200dof\u2064 this \u2062year alone.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Higgins also asserted that a\u200d barrier\u2064 system at\u2062 the \u2064border allows Customs\u2063 and Border \u2064Protection \u2062agents\u2064 to <strong>respond and\u200b to detect threats or \u2062breaches \u2063using \u200dsurveillance\u200c technology\u2063 in place along\u2062 the barrier\u200b instead\u2063 of \u200brelying on \u2064man patrol\u200b and other limited \u2063surveillance efforts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Democrat \u2064Response<\/h2>\n<p>Homeland Security Subcommittee\u200b on \u2062Border Security and Enforcement\u200d Ranking\u2064 Member \u2063Rep.\u2062 Lou \u200cCorrea (D-Calif.) weighed \u2063in on\u200c the \u2062issue, \u2064saying\u2064 that a \u200dborder wall solution\u2062 to\u200b illegal \u2064immigration \u200dwas \u2063a \u201c[President] \u200bBill \u200bClinton\u2063 era\u200b project \u2064from\u2062 30\u200b years\u200d ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Correa \u2063went\u2062 on to say \u200bthat\u2062 \u201cthe\u200c challenges today \u2063look very different than \u200bthey did 30 years ago,\u201d and\u2064 that\u2062 the \u200bquestion before \u200bthe \u2062committees was, \u201cDoes a \u200bborder\u2062 wall fit into \u2064the \u200dchallenges \u2062that \u2063we \u200bare\u200b seeing today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u2064lawmaker discussed \u2064changes that have \u2064taken place\u200c at\u200b the\u2064 border\u200d throughout\u2062 the Trump\u2064 and Biden\u2062 administrations,\u200d referencing the\u2063 COVID-19 restrictions that came\u200b with Title\u200d 42, and the \u200crepeal of that \u2062measure \u2063and\u200d enactment of \u200dTitle 8, \u2064which \u2063Mr. Correa asserted\u200d has worked well since it was reenacted.<\/p>\n<p>According \u200dto\u2062 the\u200b California\u200c lawmaker, a \u2062border wall is causing \u2062more problems \u200cthan\u200b it is\u2063 remedying: \u201cThe wall is not preventing migrants\u2064 from coming\u2064 to \u200dthe United States,\u200d but rather \u2062the \u2064wall\u2063 is \u200ddirecting migrants \u200dto\u200d cross\u200c in\u2064 more remote\u200b and dangerous areas of the \u2064border.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve \u200balso seen more injuries, \u200ctraumatizing families \u2062and costing our hospitals millions\u2063 of dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Correa \u200bcited \u2063data \u2062indicating\u200c that \u200ba\u2064 large portion of \u2063drugs\u200b coming \u2063from Mexico\u2064 and\u200c China are now coming through \u2062alternative routes,
