Dan \u200bKildee (D-Mich.), shed light on the \u2064growing problem \u2062and \u200cthe complicity \u200bof \u200bmany \u200ccompanies.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Rep. \u200dKildee\u200d on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/cross-dressing-sticky-note-bandit-hunted-by-fbi-for-3-texas-bank-robberies\/\" title=\"FBI seeks 'Sticky Note Bandit' for 3 Texas bank heists.\">task\u2064 force<\/a> are\u2062 Reps. \u200cHillary Scholten (D-Mich.), Judy Chu (D-Calif.),\u2062 Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Yadira Caraveo \u200d(D-Colo.), and Morgan McGarvey (D-Ky.).\u200c They \u200dhighlighted a\u200c concerning 69 percent rise in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-launch-child-labor-prevention-task-force-in-house\/\" title=\"House Democrats establish task force to prevent child labor.\">federal child \u2063labor law\u2063 violations<\/a>, \u2064as\u200b reported\u200c by the <a \u2062href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/newsroom\/releases\/osec\/osec20230227\">Department of Labor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2064  <\/p>\n<p>The creation of \u200dthe Child Labor Prevention Task\u2064 Force comes \u200cin\u200b response to \u200ca \u2062series of\u2063 reports\u2063 revealing a\u2064 surge in child \u2062labor law violations, \u2062with many\u200c of\u200d them linked to the \u2063increase in illegal\u2063 immigration along the southern \u2064border. However, the discussion\u2064 during\u200b the launch of the panel\u200d did not delve into\u2063 the role \u2062immigration \u2062has played\u2064 in exacerbating the issue.<\/p>\n<h3>Strengthening \u200bEfforts and \u2064Holding \u2064Corporations Accountable<\/h3>\n<p> \u200c <\/p>\n<p>In \u200d1938, \u2064Congress passed \u2063the Fair Labor Standards \u2063Act, criminalizing \u2062the \u2062employment of individuals under 14 years old in hazardous industries such as\u200b manufacturing, mining, and processing. However, both lawmakers and the Department of\u2062 Labor agree\u2064 that the current fine is insufficient to deter violations.<\/p>\n<p> \u200c <\/p>\n<p>Rep. Kildee emphasized \u2062the need\u200c for Congress \u200cto \u200ctake action\u2064 and\u200c proposed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/2956\/text?s=1&#038;r=3\">Combatting Child Labor Act<\/a> as part of the \u200csolution. This bill \u200daims \u2062to increase fines for child\u2062 labor violations, ranging \u2064from $1,000 to $150,000, with a\u2064 maximum fine \u2062of $700,000\u200c for cases resulting in\u200d the \u2063death \u200dof\u200b a minor.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Rep. \u2062Kildee \u200cstressed the \u200cimportance of \u200dthe task force, which will\u2063 collaborate\u200b across \u200dcommittee\u2064 jurisdictions \u200dto develop policy solutions, raise awareness, and\u200d ensure \u2063proper enforcement \u2062of child\u2064 labor laws. The \u2063task force will also focus on \u200celiminating\u200c child labor from supply \u2063chains.<\/p>\n<p>\u2063  <\/p>\n<p>Rep. Scholten expressed her \u2064commitment \u2062to the cause, stating, \u200d&#8221;Our task force will\u2062 create\u200d a new \u200bspace where ideas can \u2063be centralized, and we can combine our\u2062 efforts to\u2063 achieve justice \u2062for children. As a\u2063 lawmaker and a \u2063mother, \u2063I simply cannot\u200b know about this problem and look the\u200b other way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2064  <\/p>\n<h2>Addressing the\u2064 Elephant in the Room<\/h2>\n<p>Notably\u200b absent from\u2064 the lawmakers&#8217; \u200cremarks\u200c was a \u2064discussion \u200bon how large-scale illegal\u200c immigration,\u2063 which has \u200dsurged under President \u200bJoe Biden, contributes to \u200dchild \u2064labor \u200dlaw violations.\u200d The New York Times \u2064exposed the extent\u2064 of the\u2063 problem,\u200d highlighting the\u2064 exploitation of unaccompanied illegal immigrant\u2063 children in \u200cdangerous\u200b working\u2063 conditions.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200d<\/p>\n<p>In 2022 alone,\u200b over 150,000 unaccompanied children\u200c entered the\u200b United\u2064 States, part of a broader \u2062increase \u200cin \u200cillegal \u2064immigration since President Biden\u200d took office.
