Moscow, for its\u200b part, \u2062said\u2064 it had \u2064foiled a Ukrainian drone strike on\u2062 Crimea,\u200c with\u200c no \u200bmajor damage\u2064 on the ground, and\u2062 reopened a\u2063 single lane\u200b of \u200croad traffic\u200d on the \u200bCrimea\u2063 bridge.<\/p>\n<h3>Russia Mounts Ground Offensive in Northeast<\/h3>\n<p> \u200c <\/p>\n<p>Six weeks since Ukraine launched a\u200d counteroffensive in\u2062 the east\u2062 and \u200dsouth, Russia is mounting \u200da ground\u2063 offensive of its \u200down in the northeast.<\/p>\n<p> \u200d <\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s \u2063defence\u2063 ministry said its forces had advanced\u200d 2 km \u200c(1.2 miles) in the vicinity of\u200d Kupiansk, a \u2062frontline\u200b railway hub recaptured by\u2062 Ukraine in an\u2063 offensive last year. Kyiv \u200cacknowledged a &#8220;complicated&#8221; \u2062situation in the area. Reuters could not independently verify the situation.<\/p>\n<p> \u200d <\/p>\n<p>Since \u2064Ukraine began its counteroffensive last month, \u2064Kyiv has \u200brecaptured \u2064some villages in the\u200b south and territory around \u200bthe ruined city\u200b of Bakhmut in the east, \u200bbut has yet to attempt\u200c a \u200bmajor breakthrough\u200d across heavily defended Russian\u200c lines.<\/p>\n<p>The top U.S. general\u2063 said\u2063 Ukraine&#8217;s counteroffensive\u200d was far \u2063from a failure, but predicted a long haul.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think\u2063 there&#8217;s a lot of fighting \u2064left to go and I&#8217;ll stay with \u2063what we said before: This is going to be\u2063 long. It&#8217;s going \u200dbe hard.\u200c It&#8217;s \u2063going to be\u2064 bloody,&#8221; General Mark\u2063 Milley, the\u200c chairman of the\u200d Joint \u2062Chiefs\u200b of Staff,\u2063 told reporters\u2063 in\u2064 Washington.<\/p>\n<h3>Food\u200d Risks and Diplomatic Fallout<\/h3>\n<p>The Black\u2062 Sea\u2062 grain export \u2062deal \u2062brokered a \u200byear \u200bago by Turkey\u200d and\u2064 the United\u200c Nations was\u200d one\u200b of the only diplomatic successes of \u2062the\u2063 war, \u200blifting a \u200cde facto Russian blockade of Ukrainian ports and \u2064heading\u2062 off a\u200d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russia-says-it-will-shut-down-ukraines-grain-exports\/\" title=\"Russia to halt Ukraine's grain exports.\">global food emergency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2062 and Russia \u200care both among \u200dthe world&#8217;s biggest exporters of grain and other \u200bfoodstuffs. If Ukrainian grain is again blocked from the market, prices could\u200d soar around\u2064 the world, hitting \u200cthe poorest countries\u2064 hardest.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s move \u2064was\u200b condemned by several\u200b G20 members at \u200ca finance and economic \u2064policymakers\u200d meeting on Tuesday, \u2063though host \u2063India \u200dsaid it had\u200c been unable to reach \u2062a consensus due\u2062 to objections\u2064 from China and Russia.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062 <\/p>\n<p>Moscow\u2064 spurned calls from Ukraine to allow shipping\u200c to resume without \u200cRussian participation, with the Kremlin \u200copenly saying \u200bships entering the area\u2064 without \u2062its guarantees\u200d would be in \u200ddanger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re talking \u2063about \u200ban\u200c area that&#8217;s close \u2064to a war\u200b zone,&#8221; Kremlin spokesman \u2062Dmitry Peskov said. &#8220;Without the appropriate security\u200d guarantees, certain risks arise\u2063 there. So if something \u2063is\u2064 formalised\u2062 without \u200cRussia, \u2063these risks should\u200b be taken into account.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Russia \u200dsays\u2064 it\u200b could return to\u200c the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/russian-gas-cut-to-europe-hits-economic-hopes-after-ukraine-grain-deal\/\" title=\"Russian gas cut to Europe hits economic hopes after Ukraine grain deal\">grain deal<\/a>,\u200c but \u200conly\u200c if its \u200cdemands are met for \u200brules \u200bto be eased \u2063for its\u200d own exports \u200bof \u2063food and fertiliser. Western countries \u200ccall that an attempt \u2062to use \u2063leverage over \u2063food\u200b supplies to force \u200ba weakening in financial sanctions, which already \u200callow Russia\u2062 to\u2063 sell food.<\/p>\n<p>  \u200d<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s President Volodymyr\u2063 Zelenskiy has called for \u2064the grain deal to continue \u200bwithout \u200dRussia, effectively seeking Turkey&#8217;s backing \u2062to negate\u2063 the \u200cRussian blockade. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, the deal&#8217;s \u200csponsor, says \u2064he thinks \u2063Moscow can be persuaded to \u2062return.<\/p>\n<p>\u2064 \u2064 <\/p>\n<p>Any attempt to \u2063reopen Ukrainian grain\u2063 shipments without Russia&#8217;s\u200b participation would depend\u200d on insurance companies \u200dagreeing to provide\u200d coverage.
