Cornell University, with its commitment\u200d to core values, has long embraced\u200c the\u2063 concept \u200dof admitting students\u200c from different backgrounds. As founder Ezra Cornell\u2062 stated, \u200bthe\u200d institution was \u200ccreated to provide \u200binstruction to any \u2063person, regardless of race. Affirmative action policies\u2062 have \u2063been employed by Ivy League \u200bschools\u2062 and other elite universities to increase the representation of black and \u200bHispanic students. Racial\u200b diversity\u200c is\u200b not \u2063just a token \u200dgesture; \u2063it \u200cis an \u2062integral\u2064 part \u2063of these institutions\u2019 \u2062identities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, the recent Supreme Court ruling against affirmative action in \u200bhigher education\u2064 has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/after-affirmative-action-school-choice-could-be-a-positive-way-forward\/\" title=\"School choice could be a positive step forward after affirmative action.\">deemed race-based \u2063admissions \u2062policies unconstitutional<\/a>. \u200dThis means that Cornell and other elite universities will have to reevaluate\u200c their current practices. Yet, it is\u2064 unlikely that \u2063they\u2062 will abandon\u2063 their pursuit of \u200ddiversity. \u2064So, \u200bhow do they move forward?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The End of Affirmative Action:\u2063 A Positive\u200d Step<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The\u2064 end\u2063 of affirmative\u2063 action in \u200cadmissions is a positive development for\u200b our country. It\u2063 puts an \u200bend to discrimination against Asian \u200dstudents and the practice of lowering \u2063standards based on race. This \u200bpractice not only\u200c perpetuates discrimination \u200bbut\u200d also \u2064sets up black and\u200d Hispanic \u2064students for failure if they \u2062come from underprivileged \u200beducational backgrounds. However,\u2064 it is crucial to ensure \u2062that \u200call Americans, regardless of race, have equal opportunities to succeed. Cultivating a highly talented \u2062student \u200dbody from \u200cdiverse \u2063backgrounds, \u200cbeliefs, and experiences should remain a priority for\u2064 universities. \u2062The question is, how do we achieve \u200bthis?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Supporting School \u200bChoice: A Path to Diversity<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: \u200b400\">In a \u2064recent\u2064 opinion piece\u2064 for \u200dThe\u200c New York Times, Harvard professor Roland Fryer highlighted the lack of intervention by \u2064elite\u2063 universities in the critical K-12 years\u200d of\u200d minority students. He argues that\u200d these\u2063 universities should invest in middle and high schools\u2062 that\u200d prepare disadvantaged students for college.\u200b By supporting existing \u200cschools and expanding\u200c school choice, elite \u200duniversities can change\u2063 the\u200b futures of thousands of minority students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:\u2062 400\">Currently, \u200c32 \u2062states\u200b and\u2062 Washington, D.C. have some form of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/every-state-that-passed-or-expanded-school-choice-in-2023\/\" title=\"2023: More states embrace school choice.\">school choice\u2063 program<\/a>, allowing \u200bfamilies to access education\u200d options they may\u200d not otherwise afford. However, \u2064the\u2064 availability\u200c and \u200deffectiveness \u200bof \u2063these programs\u2063 vary across states.\u2064 To truly transform\u2062 the lives of \u200cminority students, state and local governments\u200b must be encouraged to expand\u2064 school\u2064 choice\u2062 initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: \u200c400\">There \u2063are \u2064already numerous unique schools, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/government-is-the-biggest-obstacle-to-educational-freedom\/\" title=\"Government Is the Biggest Obstacle to Educational Freedom\">low-cost private schools<\/a> in New York City, that cater \u2062to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/calif-gov-newsom-announces-2b-plan-to-reopen-schools-by-spring\/\" title=\"Calif. Gov. Newsom announces B plan to reopen schools by spring\">low-income students<\/a> and prepare them for elite colleges. By funding scholarships and supporting these schools, elite\u2062 universities can make\u200b a significant impact. Organizations like Black Minds Matter have \u200dcompiled directories of schools founded by African Americans,\u2064 demonstrating the potential of \u200cschool choice to empower education\u200b entrepreneurs and provide high-quality education to disadvantaged students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If Cornell\u200b and other\u2064 elite universities truly want to\u200b increase the representation of black and Hispanic students, \u200dthey should embrace school \u2062choice.
