The\u200d Chinese government\u200b arrested the two Michaels in retaliation for Canada\u2019s \u2063detention of Chinese telecom executive \u2064Meng Wanzhou at the behest of\u2062 a U.S. extradition \u200brequest (the U.S. authorities \u2063accused \u2062Meng of committing fraud and violating U.S. sanctions against Iran). The two \u2063Michaels were wrongfully detained for more than \u200d1,000 days on trumped-up spying charges \u200band were\u2064 released after\u200b Meng reached a deal with U.S. \u200bprosecutors \u2064and\u2064 returned to China first.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2064 \u200d\u200b <\/p>\n<p>Americans\u200c are not\u200b spared from China\u2019s hostage diplomacy. \u2063More\u2064 than 200 U.S. citizens \u200dare wrongfully detained by the Chinese \u200dauthorities, including\u2064 businessman Mark\u2064 Swidan\u2062 and\u200b pastor\u2063 David \u200dLin. These U.S. citizens \u2063shared a similar\u200b ordeal \u200bin China: They \u2063were arrested without \u2064a warrant; the \u2063Chinese\u2062 police announced formal\u200c charges against them months after they\u200d were already in\u200b detention; and the Chinese police limited their contact with\u2063 their families, consulate officials,\u200b and lawyers. Since the Chinese \u2064courts have \u200ba conviction \u200crate\u200b of 99.9 percent, most \u200bAmericans\u2063 in detention \u2062were convicted\u200b and sentenced to \u2063jail regardless \u2063of how \u200cflimsy\u200b their charges\u200c were.<\/p>\n<div \u200cclass=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a094e7b24217000048bf5e9562f36e8c fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-6\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-a094e7b24217000048bf5e9562f36e8c\"><\/div>\n<p> \u200d   <\/p>\n<p>The\u200d Chinese authorities have \u2063also \u2064barred \u2062a\u200d few Americans who \u2062were never charged with any \u2062wrongdoings \u200dfrom \u2064leaving\u200b China\u200c under the so-called \u201cexit ban.\u201d\u200c According\u2062 to Safeguard \u200dDefenders, \u200ba human \u2064rights group, between 1995\u200d and 2019, the Chinese \u200bgovernment arbitrarily \u2062prevented 29 Americans, \u206344 \u200dCanadians, and thousands\u2064 of Chinese from \u2062leaving \u2062China. Those subject to \u200dthe\u2064 ban couldn\u2019t contest it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u200b   <\/p>\n<p>John \u2063Kamm, \u2062head \u2064of Dui \u200cHua, a San Francisco-based nonprofit\u200c organization focusing\u200b on \u2063securing the release \u2062of \u2064detained Americans, told Newsweek that\u2062 he\u200b considers \u200dAmericans subject to\u2064 coercive measures \u2063political prisoners because \u201ctheir imprisonment\u2062 and treatment \u2063are related\u2062 to\u2064 the poor state \u2062of political relations between the\u200d two countries.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  \u200b  <\/p>\n<p>Besides their own safety,\u200d Americans are also concerned about the safety of their employees \u2062and the sustainability of their business operations \u200bin \u2064China.<\/p>\n<p>  \u2062\u200c  <\/p>\n<p>Driven by dictator Xi Jinping\u2019s obsession with national security, Chinese authorities have targeted\u2063 foreign companies \u200cand businesspeople with \u2064raids, investigations, \u200cand detentions. \u2064In \u200dearly March, U.S. billionaire \u200bMark Mobius,\u200b once a champion of investing in \u2063China, complained that he couldn\u2019t\u2062 get\u200c his capital\u200b out of China due\u200b to\u200d the\u2063 government\u2019s restrictions.\u2062 He warned \u200cother foreign \u2063investors to\u200c \u201cbe very, very careful when investing in China.\u201d <\/p>\n<div\u2062 class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3594a09093e98cbe19b3f31c38edb9ef \u200cfdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-10\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3594a09093e98cbe19b3f31c38edb9ef\"><\/div>\n<p>In \u200cthe days that \u200dfollowed,\u2064 China\u2019s Finance Ministry suspended the operations of accounting firm\u2062 Deloitte\u2019s\u2064 Beijing office for \u200cthree months and\u200c imposed\u200c a $31 million fine on\u200b the firm, \u2064alleging \u201cserious audit deficiencies\u201d \u200cin the firm\u2019s\u2064 auditing work for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/living-through-a-socialist-collapse-an-insiders-account-of-venezuelas-demise\/\" title=\"Living Through A Socialist Collapse: An Insider\u2019s Account Of Venezuela\u2019s Demise\">state-owned enterprises<\/a>. Then\u200d Chinese \u200bpolice raided \u200cthe Beijing offices of Mintz\u2064 Group,\u2064 a U.S. \u200cdual-diligence firm, \u200dand detained all \u2062five Chinese employees. Later that month, the Cyberspace Administration\u2062 of China announced \u2062a cybersecurity \u2064investigation into \u2063U.S. computer \u200cmemory maker \u2063Micron Technology. In April,\u2064 authorities\u2063 questioned\u200d U.S. \u2064consulting \u2064firm Bain &#038; Co.\u2019s\u200d employees in\u2064 Shanghai.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b    <\/p>\n<p>Xi seems determined \u2064to make China \u200can even more \u2062hostile environment for foreign businesses and investors. In \u200clate April, Beijing passed a\u2062 sweeping counter-espionage law.\u2062 According to Reuters, the law \u2062treats \u201call documents, data, materials, and \u200bitems\u2062 related to \u2064national security and\u2062 interests\u201d as state secrets; \u201cexpands the definition\u2062 of\u2064 espionage to \u2062include\u200d cyber attacks against state \u2064organs or\u2063 critical information infrastructure\u201d; \u200cand \u201callows\u2064 authorities carrying \u2063out\u200b an anti-espionage investigation\u200b to\u2062 gain access to data, electronic\u2064 equipment, and information on\u2064 personal property \u2064and also \u2064to ban \u2062border crossings.\u201d But the law\u2019s definition of national security or\u200c interests is so vague that \u2063doing business \u2062in China has\u2062 become\u2062 a landmine for foreign companies\u2064 and businesspeople.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b    <\/p>\n<p>Increasingly, \u2064Beijing attempts to restrict\u2063 what foreign\u2064 businesses can say\u200b or \u200cdo beyond\u200c its borders. Recently, \u200bafter U.S. investment bank\u200d Goldman Sachs\u200c issued\u2064 a bearish \u200dreport\u200c on Chinese \u200dbanks \u2062that contributed to the \u200bselloff of their stocks, China\u2019s state-owned media lashed out at Goldman,\u200c accusing the bank of misinterpreting the facts.<\/p>\n<p>    \u200d<\/p>\n<p>The\u2063 smart \u200cmoney \u2064has been moving away from China in recent months,\u200c as foreign investors \u2063sold \u2063Chinese debt \u200cfor\u2063 six\u200d consecutive months, and foreign direct investment in China \u2063reportedly fell to $20 billion in\u200c the \u200cfirst\u200b quarter of this \u2063year, compared \u2064to $100\u200d billion in\u200b the same \u2062period last year. Goldman Sachs predicts \u201c[capital] outflows \u200cfrom China this year will cancel \u2063out investment going \u2062into the country,\u201d\u2062 a shocking \u2062reversal for a\u200b country that has\u2064 relied on \u2064foreign investments \u2064to propel its economy for four\u2063 decades.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u2064  \u2063 <\/p>\n<p>Given the increasing \u200drisks\u200b for Americans and American\u2062 businesses in China, it is puzzling that top executives of \u200dsome \u2062of the largest American\u2064 corporations, from Apple\u2019s CEO \u2063Tim Cook to Microsoft\u2019s Founder Bill Gates to J.P. \u200cMorgan\u2019s\u200b CEO Jamie \u2064Dimond, remain bullish\u200c about their business\u200c perspectives in China, and have all made pilgrimages to Beijing in recent months\u2063 to kowtow to Xi. Tesla\u2019s Elon \u200bMusk even\u200c joined \u200d15 other Chinese automakers in signing an\u2064 open letter, pledging\u2064 their commitment to enhancing China\u2019s \u201ccore socialist values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2064 \u2063   <\/p>\n<p>If\u2064 Musk and\u2063 other American executives think they can protect their\u2063 business interests in China by playing nice \u200bwith Xi, they must \u2064think again. Should Xi\u200d invade\u2064 Taiwan, \u200che \u200dwill not hesitate to confiscate the\u2064 assets and \u2062technologies of American \u2064companies in \u2062China and hold employees of these companies as\u200d hostages. \u2063American corporations \u200cdoubling \u200cdown on \u2062their investments in China \u200bnow\u200d while ignoring \u2064the\u200b growing \u200cgeopolitical \u200drisks are \u2062acting irresponsibly toward \u2063their \u2062shareholders\u2064 and employees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u2064    <\/p>\n<p>Equally \u200bdisturbing \u2063is\u200b that high-level \u2064officials of\u2064 the Biden administration, from \u2062U.S. Secretary \u200cof State \u200bAntony Blinken to Treasury Secretary \u2064Janet Yellen, have embarrassed themselves and\u2063 the United States by bowing to\u2062 Chinese officials during their\u200d official visits to Beijing \u200cand pledging not to seek economic decoupling from\u200b China, even though\u200c it\u2019s the\u200c Chinese government\u2019s policies that have\u2063 threatened the wellbeing \u200dof American visitors and employees\u200c of \u200dAmerican companies in China, forcing \u200bsome American businesses to\u2064 leave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Americans should \u2063refrain from visiting China for\u200d the sake of\u200d their safety, and American \u200dcompanies \u2063that have operations in China or\u2062 rely on \u200bthe\u2062 country for supply \u2062chains must seek alternatives outside China. \u200bWe\u2064 cannot\u200b count on\u2064 our elite class\u2062 for\u200d protection because\u2064 they are both delusional and \u200cunderprepared.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fdrlst__b89e9-147fd840366a8079368b0466ea113b7e\u200b fdrlst__b89e9-after-post-content\" id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-147fd840366a8079368b0466ea113b7e\"><\/div>\n<p> \u2062\t\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">  \u200d  \t\t\t\t\t\u2062 \u200c \u200c \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US State Department has issued a travel advisory, urging Americans to reconsider visiting China, Hong Kong, and Macau.
