Despite its intentions, Polk County District\u200d Court Judge Joseph Seidlin&#8217;s injunction now allows pregnant women in \u200dIowa to \u2063terminate\u200d pregnancies up to 20 \u2063weeks.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n \u2063\u200d <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The\u200b court will grant \u2063the temporary injunction requested here. In doing\u2063 so, it\u2064 recognizes that\u2062 there are good, honorable, and intelligent \u200dpeople on both sides \u2063of\u200b this upsetting\u2064 societal \u2062and constitutional\u2064 dilemma,&#8221;\u200c Seidlin\u200d wrote,\u200d according to\u2064 NBC. &#8220;Patience and perseverance are\u200c also hallmark traits on both\u2064 sides, \u200btraits\u200d that continue\u2063 to deserve respect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Seidlin emphasized \u2062the importance of following current Iowa\u200b Supreme Court \u2064precedent and maintaining the status quo \u2064while the litigation progresses. The law explicitly states that\u200b it does not \u200bimpose civil or \u2063criminal liability on women who \u200cundergo abortions in violation\u2063 of\u200b the division. However,\u2063 the Iowa Board of Medicine has\u200d the\u2062 authority to\u2064 determine \u200dpunishments for \u2064abortion providers\u2064 who violate\u200d the law.<\/p>\n<p>The ACLU of\u2063 Iowa, Planned Parenthood North\u200b Central States, and the Emma \u2062Goldman \u2062Clinic filed a legal\u2064 challenge before the legislation reached \u2062the\u2062 governor&#8217;s desk. During a\u200b hearing, \u200dSeidlin expressed his commitment to a fair\u200b ruling and refrained from making hasty decisions.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Reynolds \u200bresponded to \u200cthe judge&#8217;s\u2063 order by vowing to take the fight to the Iowa\u2062 Supreme Court. She expressed concern for the unborn and \u200ccriticized the abortion industry&#8217;s attempt to\u200c undermine the will of Iowans and their\u200d elected \u200brepresentatives.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa&#8217;s\u2064 &#8220;heartbeat&#8221; law is part of a \u200bwave of Republican-led state\u2063 laws that restrict abortion following the Supreme\u200b Court&#8217;s \u2062decision\u2064 to overturn\u200c Roe v. \u2062Wade in June \u200dof \u2064last \u2063year.\u2062 Currently, \u200cabortion\u2062 is banned at \u2064various stages \u200dof\u2062 pregnancy\u200d in over a dozen states,\u2062 each with different\u200b exceptions.
