However, \u200cthese \u200cadvocacy groups fear \u200cthat this law could\u2062 lead to &#8220;unlawful arrest, prosecution, and harassment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  \u200d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[The \u2062law] puts thousands \u2062of \u200bFloridians and \u2062residents of other\u2063 states\u2014both citizens\u200c and \u2063noncitizens alike\u2014at risk of\u2063 being\u200d arrested, \u2064charged, and prosecuted with\u2062 a felony for transporting a vaguely-defined\u200b category of immigrants into\u2062 Florida,&#8221; the lawsuit \u200dalleges.\u2063 &#8220;Families may be unable\u2064 to visit each other across\u2062 state lines. Parents\u200c who live near\u200d the\u2063 state border \u2063may \u2064be unable to drive their children \u2064to\u200b medical\u200b appointments or soccer matches.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The plaintiffs \u2064in this lawsuit include prominent\u2063 organizations such \u2063as \u200cthe\u2063 American Immigration Council,\u200d the \u200bSouthern Poverty\u200d Law Center,\u200b the American Civil Liberties Union \u2064(ACLU), ACLU Florida, and Americans for \u2064Immigrant Justice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Florida&#8217;s draconian\u200c Senate Bill 1718, which went\u2062 into\u200d effect on July 1,\u2062 2023, includes a host \u200dof provisions designed to marginalize immigrants\u2063 and purportedly enforce federal immigration law,&#8221; states the American\u200d Immigration Council.\u2064 &#8220;Plaintiffs \u200ccontend that \u2062with Section \u200c10,\u2063 Florida has \u200dimpermissibly intruded on\u2064 the \u2064federal government&#8217;s\u200b central\u200b role \u2064in regulating\u2064 immigration and violated their right \u2063to due process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These groups are urging the Miami federal court to \u2063declare the new law &#8220;unconstitutional&#8221; due to\u200b its \u200calleged \u200cdeviation\u2064 from federal \u2062immigration policies. Notably, the\u2063 law mandates Florida hospitals that accept Medicare to verify \u2064the \u2063immigration\u200b status of patients \u200cand prohibits undocumented immigrants from driving in \u2064Florida, even if they possess a\u2064 driver&#8217;s license from another state.<\/p>\n<p>Governor DeSantis, who signed the bill in May, defended\u2063 the\u2064 law \u200bby \u200bstating, &#8220;The\u200d Biden Border Crisis has\u2064 wreaked havoc across the United States \u200dand has \u200bput Americans in\u200c danger. In Florida, we will not stand idly by \u200cwhile the federal\u2063 government \u200dabandons its lawful duties\u2062 to protect our country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its\u200b controversial provisions, the law also allocates $12\u2062 million in funding for transporting \u2063illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities.\u200d This\u2063 move comes less\u200b than a \u200dyear after Governor\u2063 DeSantis transported 50 immigrants to Martha&#8217;s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and has recently\u2062 transported\u200d illegal immigrants to \u2062other sanctuary\u2062 cities.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\">click \u200dhere<\/a> to visit The \u200dWashington Examiner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A left-wing immigration advocacy group filed a federal lawsuit against Gov.
