The \u200crest goes\u200c to the \u2063state \u2063to fund an \u200cagency that\u2063 enforces labor laws.<\/p>\n<p> \u2063<\/p>\n<p>The California \u2062Supreme Court \u2064said \u2062nothing\u200b in\u200c that\u200b law bars workers\u200d from pursuing claims on\u2064 their \u2062own \u200dbehalf \u200bin arbitration \u2062while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/court-rules-against-uber-in-major-win-for-california-workers\/\" title=\"Uber loses court case, workers in California win.\">separately litigating \u200clarge-scale \u200cclaims<\/a> \u200cin \u200bcourt.\u200d \u2063  \u2063\u200b  \u200b <\/p>\n<p>The decision \u200dlikely undermines the significance \u200cof a\u200c 2022 \u2063U.S. Supreme Court \u200bruling\u2062 involving \u2064Viking River\u2064 Cruises that\u200d said\u2064 companies could force \u2064individual PAGA\u200b claims into arbitration, and\u200b could mean that California employers \u200cwill face more\u200b large-scale \u200dlawsuits. <\/p>\n<p>\u2064 <\/p>\n<p>Theane Evangelis, \u200da lawyer for Uber, \u200bsaid \u200bin\u200c a\u2063 statement \u200bthat \u200dMonday\u2019s ruling conflicts\u2062 with\u200c the Viking River\u2064 decision and violates a\u200d federal\u200b law\u2063 that requires enforcing valid arbitration agreements.<\/p>\n<p> \u200c<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u200c are\u2063 considering our\u2062 appellate\u2062 options,\u201d \u200dshe said. <\/p>\n<p>\u200c <\/p>\n<p>Michael\u200b Rubin, \u200cwho\u2062 represents\u200d Adolph, \u200csaid the \u200cruling could \u2062spur \u2062companies\u200c to\u200d reconsider\u200b forcing\u200c workers\u2019\u2062 claims into \u2063arbitration if large-scale \u200bPAGA lawsuits\u2064 can \u2062still proceed in court. Rubin also \u2064represented \u2064the\u2064 plaintiff\u2064 in the \u200cViking River \u2062case.<\/p>\n<p> \u2062<\/p>\n<p>More\u2064 than \u200dhalf \u200dof private \u2064sector, \u2063nonunion\u2064 U.S. workers are required\u2063 to\u2062 sign \u2063arbitration\u2064 agreements as \u200da condition of employment. The agreements typically\u2063 bar them \u2062from\u200d filing \u2063or \u2063participating in traditional \u200dclass action lawsuits. <\/p>\n<p>Critics of mandatory\u2063 arbitration say \u2063it\u200c discourages workers from\u200d bringing\u2063 individual \u2062claims\u2064 that involve\u200b small sums of money, and that\u200d workers\u2064 who\u200d do \u200dbring disputes in\u2063 arbitration \u2064are more likely\u200c to\u2064 lose.<\/p>\n<p>Business groups \u2063maintain\u200c that arbitration is\u2064 quicker and \u2063more efficient \u2063than court, allowing \u2063workers to recoup \u200cmore money.\u200c Trade groups hailed last year\u2019s \u200dViking \u200cRiver ruling, \u200bsaying it \u2063would prevent \u200cplaintiffs in California\u2063 from\u200c using PAGA as\u200b a\u200c way \u2062around\u2064 arbitration. <\/p>\n<p> \u200d<\/p>\n<p>Groups\u2064 including the\u2064 U.S. Chamber \u200dof \u200dCommerce, the country\u2019s \u200clargest \u200dbusiness \u200blobby, \u200bfiled\u2064 briefs in Monday\u2019s\u200c case\u2064 warning\u2063 the \u2064California Supreme\u200b Court \u2062that\u200b a\u200b ruling \u200cagainst\u200c Uber \u200dcould encourage workers \u200dto file\u2064 meritless\u200d lawsuits\u2064 and\u2063 pressure \u200dcompanies\u200d to settle them. <\/p>\n<p>\u2063 <\/p>\n<p>But\u2063 the \u2062court\u2063 said those concerns \u2063should be \u2064directed \u2063at state legislators, who\u2064 have\u2062 the power to \u2063change the \u2063law.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p> \u2063<\/p>\n<p>\u200d (Reporting by Daniel \u200bWiessner \u200cin \u200bAlbany,\u2062 New York and Alison Frankel in New York;
